For those of you with apple iOS gadgets, the latest update has been released! I am updating iTunes right now, ready to grab the new download when it is released. With the new tetherless feature, with luck I will never have to use iTunes again for another update! Along with it's new split keyboard, magazine store, and iCloud support I am quite excited about this update!

As I understand it, the update goes out at 6pm gmt, or 10am pacific time.

Ok, iOS 5 is now live, and I'm actively downloading it it's 700.3 MB and the apple server speeds (which must be getting hammered right now) are looking fast.

I've been hearing about it a lot though. But I can't get it, apparently my 2nd generation iPod is to old. Whatever.

Yeah I think 3rd gen tech is the minimum requirement.

I've been playing with it for a few hours now. The new split keyboard took some getting used too! But I am using it now without any problems, saves stretching my thumbs to the middle when I type in landscape mode. ICloud is activated and I have backed up my iPad on it. As I have insurance on this device should I ever lose or break it I should be able to pick up my last backup and carry on going.

Newstand is't what I expected, each magazine works more like an app than an iBook. The stand doesn't like being dropped into a folder, so I am stuck with a screen full of black folders and one brown which looks out of place and ugly. Having said that I just spent an hour reading Maximum PC which is going for 0.69 gbp or 0.99 usd with a monthly subscription. I also subscribed to popular science which is downloading as I type, that's £1.49 or $1.99 per month. Pc format is too expensive for me at £2.99 and Linux format is £4.99 so screw that! It's a free os I can read about that online lol.

But if magazines settle at the 0.69 to 1.49 mark then I wouldn't mind subscribing to three or four magazines a month, perhaps even six if they settle around the lower price.

I have not bought a magazine in years, I quite like this arrangement though.

I was having difficulty connecting to the server so I'll be getting it later.

I'm a bit disappointed though, from what I understand multitasking gestures didn't make it for the first gen iPad.

I just had a go and it didn't work but I'm not too disappointed, I'm used to double tapping the home button anyway. I like the new features in Safari though, especially tab browsing.

I must admit multi-gesture doesn't do a thing for me. I've got it on my netbook, I'm supposed to swipe up and down with three fingers to scroll, draw patterns to perform tasks, and setup my own macro's. It's all very impressive, but in real world day to day tasks I don't want to think about the interface, I want to be focused on the job I'm doing. I don't want to be trying to remember which squiggly eight or backward three or multi-finger swipe gets me from one thing to another.

Having said that on the computer I do use a lot of keyboard shortcuts. I'm sure I'd have gotten used to multi gesture swiping. On the other hand I've got it on my netbook and never bother with it. In fact, it's sometimes a right pain in the bum because two fingers on a chrome tab, closes that tab. It took me AGES to realise why my tabs kept disappearing!!

So anyway I'm more than happy with the double tap home button thing, I can't coincidently trigger it just because I'm wiping a bit of dirt off the screen, or my cat decides he really really wants to sit on it. I've found a cats bottom performs some odd tasks in the few apps I have that already have multi-gestures built in!

For some reason the update failed on my iPhone 4 and killed it. I only just got it back from having the home button repaired.

That's no good Thraxas, if it makes you feel better:

That would be a funny conversation to your workmates if the cat accidentally sent them something.

Have you tried resetting your iPhone? Hold down the power and home button together until the screen goes black, then press the power button again and the apple logo should appear.

If course if the installation only went half way through you'll need to collect on your warranty.

@Hodgey

It's happened. Not with the ipad, but whatever device I am using, he has to sit on it. The laptop, the desktop keyboard, this netbook, he's even fallen asleep with his head on my mobile phone. So far he hasn't tried to claim my PSP for some reason, perhaps the buttons jab him in odd places. But last week I couldn't find my iPod touch anywhere, I looked all day, until the cat got up, he had fallen asleep on it. I'm scared to leave my kindle on the sofa, simply because it's not as durable as my other equipment.

But yeah, he's sent messages over IM, and sent partly written e-mails by jumping up on the keyboard. He's a technological terror. He's even tried to compile programs before now, after adding kitty code of his own. Apparently the command ASGWR isn't recognised by the compiler. I think he means Ass Growl in cat language, so perhaps he wanted the computer to fart?

But not as a person? If so...he might quote you on it.

I misplace my iPod Touch like a week ago, so I've not had the chance to update it, but seems like there's a few useful updates. I've got a 4th Gen, so it should deffo work.

Yes, but the point is iOS 5 has them too now soon it'll be wedgets and animated tiles with live data. But that's how it goes they all steal each others ideas.

I think the number dropped to a mere 157 features. I think that's what they said in the PC Pro podcast #180 or #179, but I might be wrong.

Hahaha. Well, it looks like curiosity hasn't killed this cat. If you could teach him how to program you might have a world's first on your hands.

Yes I tried resetting it. The phone screen displays the plug me into iTunes picture. However, plugging it into the computer does nothing, it doesn't even make the ba da noise. I used 3 different cables so I know it's not a cable problem. It doesn't even get recognised as plugged in on another computer... My wife's phone updated flawlessly...

The repair place says they can fix it in a day. Everything is backed up so it's more of a pain than worry about losing anything...

I honestly thought the gestures would increase productivity, at least for me, and I've heard good things from iPad 2 users. It's not a huge loss though, it's not like my iPad is getting worse or anything. I personally don't have much of an issue with the home button, I think the biggest reason I looked forward to them was so that my friend would stop complaining about the double tap Although I do think the double tap would be more comfortable if the app list appeared in the middle or it did a webOS style card thing.

Eh, i'm not so big on IOS 5 now, i had to erase my ipod and sync all my apps back on to it, because after updating NONE of my apps would open, at least none of the ones that i bought on the app store, but all the ones that are apple made, worked like a charm.

Mine seems to be crashing out of previously stable apps quite a bit. Seems quite random but it's definitely happening. It's not all of them though, but typically ones that access the web. This is on 2 different devices so it's not one machine.

Try the Cracked app (I have the paid one but I assume bug is still in the test one). Before 5 it was perfect, but not it seems to crash out when you select a second article to view. Annoying.

Also I've read a lot of iPod music code is failing. ie. the ability to choose and play your own music from within a game. I have it on one of my games (Rotaslider) but will have to wait for a fix before doing anything about it.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Sounds like the update isn't a complete success for everyone. For me it runs perfectly and not had a single problem with it. It does seem a little bizarre that it works for some and not others, but hopefully Apple fixes it for all you bonnie lasses.

Safari has crashed on my a few times so I reset my device via settings and it hasn't done it since.

My iPad is still going strong!

Anyone tried the magazine system yet? I rather like it myself, been reading Maximum PC for just 69p
