Depends what country you're in really.

I'm in the UK, I have the same aspiration really, some sort of developer, it doesn't have to be games, but I'd love to of course. For my A Levels, I've taken Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Maths obviously has a lot to do with programming, so that was a natural choice and physics is also heavily used in game programming.

I'm hardly an expert, but I think I made the right subject choices and I hope it works out for me. Hopefully that helped a little, good luck.

Also, I see you've just joined, welcome to the forum.

When I left school I did a cert 4(TAFE diploma) in IT. That was an excellent springboard for programming. all the courses I have done have fed into game making, though together they are a bit all over the place.

cert 4 music
cert 4 IT
diploma art
diploma Sound engineering

each tackles a different aspect of game making and the next one I want to study is 3d modeling - when i have the time and money.

If you have a good mind you don't "need" to go to college, however college is the best environment to learn quickly(one to four solid years with other student minds and experienced lecturers to querie and speak with)

it all depends on where you are now (learning wise), and where you want to go.

nothing beats hands on experience so in your free time write code.
hope this helps
