Hey all!

I've studied some electronics in the past, and I'm thinking about going more in-depth with it... would you all say it's worth it?

Also, regarding digital electronics, it seems like there's very little you can do anymore with TTL chips (namely the 7400 series) and CMOS chips (namely the 4000 series).

What do you all think?

Why's that?

I'm currently in my 3rd year of apprenticeship as an electronic technician (don't get them mixed up with those guys that install light-bulbs and such), and it is awesome to be able to design your own circuits. I don't understand what you mean with that quote, you can still do absolutely everything with digital chips If you're saying that they are outdated, then I partially agree with you, if you're talking about the conventional chip. Today we all almost only use SMT chips : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-mount_technology

I'd say my decision to go more in depth with electronics was well worth it. I had fun making this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j0GcODn7MQ

Well, there's two things I'd like to do: Build a radio transceiver using TTL logic chips (and resistors and capacitors for filters/timing, of course) and build a video controller circuit, maybe VGA since it uses RGB instead of YPrPb like most other circuits. For the video controller I was also thinking TTL or 74HC because of the fast switching times. Even then, they don't seem fast enough. =/

EDIT: Oops, hit Send button without thinking. Cool video! I've seen stuff like plasma speakers done before... how hard was it to make?

Also... I did use to work as a Electronics Engineering Technician for a emergency lighting company, and all we used was SMDs. They were a pain in the butt at times, though since we didn't have an oven, stuff was hand-soldered.
