The scrollbar of my mouse has recently stopped working, so I'm looking for a new one. I have been looking at these three in particular:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-B75-00113-Intellimouse-Explorer-3-0/dp/B000GOUE7O/ref=sr_1_45?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1319157221&sr=1-45

http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Inferno-Gaming-SGM-4000-KLLN1-GP/dp/B003ZMF26W/ref=pd_cp_e_2

http://www.amazon.com/Raptor-Gaming-LM2-Linux/dp/B004E2G2FM/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e16

Keep in mind that this is the first time I have ever put any actual thought into my mouse, since I've previously only ever used the most basic mouse available (two buttons and a scrollbar). So I don't really know what I'm talking about with these new advanced features. You guys are probably thinking "Oh these aren't advanced mouse features, they've been around for years!" and you're probably right. I'm just dumb.

Anyway, I was curious how many buttons you guys have on your mouses.

All right you primitive screwheads, listen up...

I've always like this mouse http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.169418900

All my friends have them but I've never really gotten around to buying one, all my 'gear' is just basic office equipment like yourself.

But I can assure you it's extremely good
Especially if you are into comfort

Looks nice but it's well beyond what I'm willing to spend on a mouse. $40 is the approximate max that I'm willing to spend.

I have the standard 3 button microsoft mouse and it hasnt failed me yet (its older than my last two computers)

my friend has one of those "touch mice" with no visible buttons. two are click buttons and the wheel is a touchpad on the top.
DO NOT GET ONE OF THOSE!

it is terrible, everytime you try to do some precision work you finger rubs on the wheel sensor and your work goes haywire.

i told him
"you need a better mouse"
"this is the best mouse you can get"
(photoshop resizing goes haywire again.)
"It's clearly not."

I can't actually find my mouse on the internet, I've had it for a number of years and it's quite a reliable Xtensions Optical Mouse. It has 5 buttons - the usual 2, the middle button (which is also a scroll wheel) and 2 extra side buttons for going forward and back on web pages. Do I use them all? Yes. I don't click forward or back on my browser and clicking the middle button opens a page in a new tab, which is handy, but also if held allows me to scroll through a page horizontally and vertically. It's a nice little mouse.

In fact, a google search of my mouse brought up a TGC thread from 5 years ago of me answering a similar question in a similar thread.

Mine has 5 and I only use 3 also. In fact, I hardly use the middle button. I just use the scroll. Even in games.

I wouldn't waste money on a squillion button mouse. Just get one which is comfortable and has decent build quality and accuracy.

Hey Housewares, how are you? And, how's your dad?
My latest mouse is a simple one with only three buttons, and personnaly I don't need more.
A friend of mine has recently bought this mouse.

I have a logitech with speed control buttons and 2 side ones.

I've found them invaluable in games. I recommend a logitech

Lol, me too...I know, I suck. I just shortcut everything to my keyboard, don't see the point wasting money on a funky MMORPG mouse when I have a perfectly good one right here. They're roughly about £69.99, a rip off IMO.

logitech m705 (reduced price $39.99 (was $49.99))
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/marathon-mouse-m705
It's 1000dpi but does the job I need it to do.

8 buttons: Left Click :: Right Click :: Middle Click :: Middle (left-scroll/right-scroll) or (zoom-in/zoom-out) :: Page/zoom ((forward/back) or (zoom-in/zoom-out ::Application switcher

Note : It's hard for me to define them because they are all configurable. See config options below

The 8th button (which is actually the most of the left-side of the mouse where the thumb rests) has probably had the most impact on how efficiently I get through apps. Don't know how I ever managed without it.

Here are the config options for each button
via SetPoint 6.32.7 (driver version 5.33.14)

1. Left Click : swap buttons
2. Right Click : swap buttons
3. Zoom : Zoom:: Middle Button :: Application Switcher :: One Touch Search : Auto-Scroll :: Universal Scroll :: Keystroke Assignment :: *other
4. Forward : Forward :: Next :: Page Up :: Cruise Up:: Keystroke Assignment :: *other
5. Back : Back :: Previous :: Page Down :: Cruise Down :: Keystroke Assignment :: *other
6. Left Scroll : Left Scroll :: Back :: Previous :: Cruise Up :: Cruise Down :: Keystroke assignment :: *other
7. Right Scroll : Right Scroll :: Forward :: Next :: Cruise Up :: Cruise Down :: Keystroke assignment :: *other
8. Apllication Switcher: Application Switcher :: Document Flip :: One Touch Search :: Zoom Reset :: Play/Pause :: Keystroke Assignment :: *other

*Other selectable choices:

Application Specific Button Settings:
- Allows you to set button setting profiles specific to each/any application

Logitech Scroll App:
(plugin for Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit :: IE 8,9)

- The Scroll App is a software plug-in that provides a smooth-scrolling experience for web browsing.

Misc comments
- The ScrollWheel can be set to free spin.
- Best battery-life of any mouse I've had before (states 3 Years, and so far it's holding true to that). I have 985 days left.
- Unifying USB miniature dongle - can be used for multiple logitech wireless devices. Sticks out of USB roughly 1/4 "
- Game Mode Detection Settings
- Comfortable size and button layout for me
- Button feedback (click) feels good to me

Some of these mouses (mice?) are a bit too much for me. I don't need hundreds of buttons. Only the three main ones (left, right, scrollbar) are absolutely necessary for me, and two on the side would be nice but are not absolutely necessary. I think I'm leaning towards the third of the three I originally posted because it fits my needs for buttons and it looks really comfortable.

I don't know, I wish I could try out a mouse before I buy it. Because there's really no way to tell how comfortable a mouse is going to be until you've actualy tried it or another mouse like it.

We're good. Unfortunately, he's getting less and less free time lately. He's having to choose between playing games and playing his guitar, and he'll always choose music over games unfortunately. As for me, I'm hard at work on my game, so I usually don't have a lot of time to visit this forum. I really don't come here unless I need help with programming or something like this mouse situation. I do like this forum though, the people here are for the most part polite and helpful.

My mouse has five buttons on his shirt and three on his jacket. There's also a button on the top of each of his shoes. All the buttons do the same thing. That probably doesn't help you.

I just wanted to agree with whoever said to get a Logitech and I'd also add to stay away from a Microsoft mouse which I've never liked because they tend to jump around too much.

Brian.

I used feel the same way. But now that I have them,, my experience and productivity would suffer without them. Maybe it's because I have taken the time to actually setup application profiles to make use of the features. But even without that, something by default like the Application Switcher is something that I use regularly without thinking, just as the left mouse button. For me as long as the buttons aren't in the way or cumbersome, and the price matches.. why not have them?

The App Switcher for win7 (just put pressure where my thumb normally rests. The "button" is basically the majority of the left-side of the mouse, so it's not like I even have to search for it.)

Logitech MX Revolution.

I still feel this is the most functional mouse ever made. It has 7 buttons, horizontal and vertical scroll that can be dynamically set to either smooth or click-wheel scrolling, and also a spring loaded 'zoom' wheel on the side that can be bound to a number of useful functions. I use it for my volume up and down / mute. Best thing ever.

My mouse has 9 buttons.

Two on left, two on right, two primary and the wheel mouse acts as a three way button, press down, or pull left or pull the wheel right. 9 clickable switches so 9 buttons to my mind

Since iam a bit of competetive when it comes to games a wireless mouse is a NONO, unless i would charge it everyday, which essentially would be a pain -> my wireless headphones are bad enough as it is (even though i like it - since i can listen to music anywhere in my house, but for gaming - mweeh)

Thats the deal with all these extra buttons. My keyboard has G1 to G18. I never use these buttons, they are actually impractical, especially if you ever worked in an office and are used to a typical keyboard.

Here is the joke: These keys are even mapable in multiple modes... I can switch "modes" on my keyboard so these additional 18 keys have 36 additional functions. What do these logitech dudes think I'm going to do with it? Fly a spaceshuttle?

The Naga MMO mice are stupidly overpriced IMO. Basically if you can macro a shortcut to one of those mouse buttons you can also macro a shortcut to your keyboard and that's a lot cheaper (and probably more convenient). I play WoW and have a crap load of macros and my keyboard is all I need. WASD = Move; Q & E = Strafe; 1-5 = Attacks; R,T,Y = threat management(like taunts); F,G,H = curing; Z,X,C = enfeebling; V = Mount; B,N,M = buffs. Additional macros: see previous and add 'CTRL'.

For 3D art programs, like Silo3D everything is bound to the keyboard already, so I would see no advantage to using a multi button mouse. Essentially what you're doing is turning your mouse into a second keyboard and paying some sucker £70 to do so.

I told myself "What the hell, it's just a mouse. Why am I putting so much effort into choosing it?". So I just went to a local store and got some random mouse that looked good. This the one I got:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NR57BY/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_g147_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=12WWB3WGFHMCEGCG78Z8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

I HATE it. Now I know why I was putting so much effort into choosing a mouse. I tried playing a game with it for about two hours, and I just couldn't do it. It's completely the wrong shape for my hand, and it's wireless. I've previously used wireless mouses that were okay, but this one invariably stutters every few minutes.

I plan on returning it and ordering the first of the three mouses from my original post. Basic three button Microsoft mouses have never faild me before (until they break, but that happens with all pieces of technology eventually), and that one looks the same except with the two buttons on the side.

I've got an M510, and I really like it. I will admit that it's not great for gaming, but I don't usually play a lot of games anyway and it isn't a gaming mouse. If you're just looking for a general purpose mouse, I'd recommend the M510, but if you'll be doing a lot of gaming with it, then don't bother.

Not really, it's easier to press, say "G6" than typing "lol" manually. Personally, I would just have all the things like lol and rofl on the first channel switch thingy, then other shortcuts on the other channel thingys.

My mouse is filled with buttons. You see I have gotten to a point in my life where I just find myself needing a nearby button more and more, both out there in the june-mornings of early august and inside of the small confined space in which I spend a lot of time alone.
When I say my mouse is filled with buttons I actually mean that it has so many buttons on it that it's actually become one itself, and unfortunately for my needs, it has taken a mind of its own.
Now it's out there in real life, dropping out of school, buying cheap alcohol and hitting on women.

I am a bad father.

I ended up getting the third of the three mouses I originally posted. It fits my hand just right, it doesn't stutter like that Logitech mouse I tried, and it has just the buttons I need (not an excessive amount, but more than the three basic ones). I'm very happy with it, and would heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a mouse.

I counted 104 buttons on my mouse... but I may have counted some more than once as I've been informed I only actually have 3.

Can't get the hang of this counting malarkey, I'm pretty sure I've made that mistake at least 40bn times.

That, it's a great mouse. It's just a standard mouse, but it's great. It works, left button, right button, scroll, what more do you need? It's a simple recipe, that you shouldn't ruin with extra spices, unless you have a fancy taste.

Cooking a simple piece of chicken breast is just bland and boring, perhaps chop it up, add some garlic, onion, tarragon, chicken stock and some cornflour to thicken it up, perhaps serve it up with a side of diced potatoes and you're looking at a tasty meal.

Er...where exactly was I going with your cooking analogy?

The scroll is really sensitive, but I'm used to it... But now whenever I use someone else's mouse I get annoyed.
