While reorganizing my books I came across my original DarkBasic User Manual (Revised for Version 1.12). Turned to "Programing Principals" (yes it was spelled that way), and I guess I never read the first paragraph.

Quote: "
..."Dark derives from the term 'Dark Horse' (go ahead, look it up)."
"

So I looked it up.

[Wikipedia]
Quote: "
"Dark horse is a term used to describe a little-known person or thing that emerges to prominence, especially in a competition of some sort."
"

Now that makes sense. All this time I thought that "Dark" implied some sort of mystical sense, or Dark Magic... not exaclty in an occult type of way,, but merely a bit of the unknown. I also felt it had either a space theme as in Dark Matter, or that it implied bedroom coders pulling an all-nighter.

I guess if it was the latter it could have been called 'NocturnalBasic'. I can just see someone releasing a plug-in for a particle emitter: Noct.... Emissions.

Anyways, strange that I just now find out what was meant by "Dark".

Matter is energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively Theres no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and were the imagination of ourselves.

I remember reading that too, but I had always figured more of an occult thing, especially with all the pyramids and all that.

I also read that line about the phrase Dark Horse; it being an unknown engine emerging into prominence; but this is not what the name implies.

I hate the names DarkBasic professional and DarkGDK; there is nothing dark about their tecnology and simple design; but this is the image that their names and logos portray; it limits where you can use the logo and names.

If you are making a game for a certain audience, it wouldn't be easy to promote the engine without people asking "why is the engine called Dark Basic" or "What's so dark about it". It wouldn't be ideal to display a nice big pyramid with the 'Dark Basic' caption inside a install program for a childrens game or a game about sport; even though one may wish promote the engines.

It is shame for those who share this situation, but certainly, this is no problem if you are making a first person shooter or zombie type game.

AppGameKit was definately a better name for a product of this kind in my opinion, for something that doesn't limit itself to a particular audience, and possibly the reason why the company name was changed to The Game Creators.

But I am sure many out there love the name DarkBasic.

I like the name DarkBASIC, although I think it's a little weird. Yes, I knew how it got its name already. Did you know that FreeBASIC's logo is a dark horse?

It would definitely sound more occult if it was BlackBASIC...

Just a good thing it's not called PinkBASIC with yellow polka dots. The logo wouldn't be a pyramid, it would be Mr. Blobby...

When the manual mentioned that Dark Horse, I thought they were referring to the comic distributor.

I kinda thought AppGameKit looked a little silly and squished together but it makes a nice acronym

The name Dark Basic will always hold special meaning for me, because it got me into programming. I may not use it anymore but I wouldn't be where I'm at without it.
