In the end, the current i7-2600K seems to be the better choice unless price is of no concern. It still ties or beats out the newer i7-3960x in single threaded apps, and isn't that far behind really when the 3960x is able to use all 6 cores over the 2600K's 4 cores. The $1000 price tag isn't worth the improvement really, unless you're a hardcore workstation user.
