My opinion on this whole matter.

The people who create free media do it because A. To help others out who can't otherwise grasp it. B. To get better at what they are doing. C. Get their name out their.

I am not going to point at people and call names, but i think the... "younger" crowd possibly demanded so much out of these people that they decided to get up and walk through the doorway.

Anyways i would continue on the subject, but i have my next class to go to.

[edit]: i too am curious as to what happened to cosmic

I did my best to not post in this thread, but I just can't help it now. This thread disgusts me. Be happy there is ANY free media being released. Its a lot more than anywhere else, and just because there is a lull in the activity doesn't mean anything. People will always be around here to release media freely. If there is a lot of it or not does not matter, it is a huge amount more than anywhere else. Be happy there is a portion of us who dedicate our time to free projects, or as a hobby, or whatever the reasoning. And certainly don't expect it.

I'm still here, just can't do anything right now. Just had surgery.

Got my little feelings hurt by a friend, but not to worry guys, as soon as I'm all healed up, I'll be back with more free stuff, and a few more community pack projects, and more.

I can't let the actions of one, outway the desires of many. And as far as the issue of free media, If you can make money at it, Do it! If your not good enough, bust your rump, and get better.

If your good enough, give what, and when you can, from the heart, and expect nothing in return. But don't down those who are trying to make a buck with the skills they have worked so hard to obtain.

Nothing in life is free, so we need to really be grateful, for the little we get, now and then.

Remember, not everyone is as crazy as I am, when it comes to giving away free media.

Later on my friends. Be well.

I have a very hard time coming across money I can spend on model packs, usually takes me some number of months to get enough for ONE, unless I get a small windfall of cash from somewhere. So, I take free stuff when it's offered if it suits my needs, and even then I accept it reluctantly, because I don't like having to compile a list of credits, A) because I forget people's names, and B) I want to be able to say I made the game, and no one else. That is how I feel about free media. Getting back to model packs, I don't complain about them. Let's face it, the prices are outrageously unreasonable. But I don't complain. Why? Because the prices are unreasonable in our favor!!! $20 for over 200 gaming assets. Unbelievable. I just bought MP 49; the office pack, and I CANNOT BELIEVE it was $15!!!

Welcome to the next generation; the ME ME ME! generation.

I think we are all blessed to just have discovered TGC! Cheap model packs, good game dev software, friendly forums, what could be better!

@CP:

Thank you CP for not leaving. We are all... well, most of us anyway - are very grateful of what you have offered.

Quote: "Got my little feelings hurt by a friend, but not to worry guys, as soon as I'm all healed up, I'll be back with more free stuff, and a few more community pack projects, and more."

I hope I don't annoy you or otherwise by asking this question, but that wouldn't happen to be the person who accused you of stealing that character mesh, would it?

Quote: "I can't let the actions of one, outway the desires of many."

Are you saying you give out all this stuff simply because we want it!!! CP, you are too kind.

Quote: "And as far as the issue of free media, If you can make money at it, Do it! "

I hope to aspire to that point someday. In the mean time (and when I get time ), I'll hand out free stuff to get feedback and see what I need to improve on. It won't be soon though.

Sage advice for the young, CP. Well said.

Yes, as we always should be. I think this drying up of free media is actually good; it'll teach the new people how to model and to appreciate those who give out free stuff and those who take the time to teach us noobs how to do it.

Thank you for starting this thread ZP. I have been able to pick up some good insight from those more experienced to help me in my wonderful adventure of making games.

Sincerely,
Captain Coder

EDIT: Just saw the new post about how the paper was a joke. Didn't mean to prolong the discussion of it.

I guess I was a troll on this thread, but people did state their opions, and I liked that. I saw others ask for a lock on this tread, and I agreed.

The mods will leave it open till all opinions have been expressed on this, they have strong opinions themselves about the idea of free media and the attitudes towards it around here.
Still I think its now been exhausted.

We have Dale who spends countless hours making free media for the community.

We have rolfy who makes creative and awesome segment prefabs, and skyboxes for our developments. He charges a minimal amount, but well worth the price.

We have two wives (Willow and BlueFox) who are rising up in the ranks of pack and media creators.

What more do we need?

I believe I need another tea...

In all seriousness, opinions are going to vary because of the diverse group we have. We have some that do this because they enjoy it. We have some that are just hobbyists. We have some that try to make a little extra cash. Does it really matter whether it is free or costs? I am grateful for all the media we bought or received for free. Otherwise, it would take longer for us to get our developments done if we had to do it all on our own.

That's very honest of you. Not very easy to find people who will admit something like that these days. Unfortunately, I am not always one of those people.

First off... literally laughing my you know what off @Xplosys (I caught that)

Daniel is right, time is money. Specially for those that spent countless hours teaching themselves and \ or who knows how much money spent on college or other courses to learn and not to mention countless hours trying to keep up with new techniques and technologies. Oh and the cost of software to do the work.

As for there not being enough free media... uhh there are Gigs of free media scattered among this forum and other outlets online.

Maybe this is the moment to eternally thank all those who give so generously -
(I hope I speak on behalf of the many, like me, who download anonymously)

we do appreciate although we do not always post
we do use because we can't/are learning to model/mod/script ourselves
and we admire
because we wish we could do what you do
