I've been working on this tool for a long period of time and now its finished. Its a simple tool for animatiors or for testing animations. I use it a lot when I need to test an animation, very useful in the right hands. This is a free download at my website www.uokgames.com when you register on the forums and post a request for it.

How long did this actually take to make you?

Because in all honesty, this looks like the most tedious software I think I've ever seen.
There is so much wrong with the way a user has to add and remove frames I just don't feel inclined to at least tackle some of them.

Actually I will point it out using one simple example (which just highlights that there was no thought in terms of user interaction in your software design):

Case: I've just spent the past 15 minutes manually adding 300 frames to each and every box (It would take 15 minutes because it took you 1 minute to add 20 frames).
I then realise that I need to insert a frame between 150 and 151.

And then in order to get the software, you ask users to sign up to your forum and then post a request to be sent it?

I hate to have a go at you, but if you want to be taken seriously as a developer, you need to set out clear goals in your software design, otherwise there is not point in downloading the software as it doesn't function in the way it was intended (in this case, a tool to make testing animations quick).

The tool was made for my self originally but I had a lot of people ask me for it when I used it. I never handed it out though because it was not finished prior. I mean it worked before but not for someone who did not know how to use the tool. The original design concept was make a simple tool I could use to test animations and set frame rates correctly with out having to build a entire menu to test. So the tool works perfectly for me but it may not be for all. If you need or want something more advanced, I’m sure there our better tools out there, I don’t know of any but surely someone else might know. I don’t know how much they would even cost as well either. My tool is free to whom ever and its available upon request only until I get my store setup. Once my web store is setup, you can download it for free of course with out requesting a link.

Then why make an entire thread about it on an external forum to advertise this tool you made? If you want it to be of some use to people (which you do, otherwise there would be no point advertising it), then you have to ask yourself these questions.

Based on your other forum post, you're having trouble keeping people interested in your site, but thats the point, you aren't making anything of significant quality to keep people hooked.
You clutter your site with quickly made Visual Basic programs and it looks untidy and unprofessional.
I'm not trying to be harsh, I'm just giving you the impressions I got from visiting your site and viewing the products you have offered in the past.
You have to think about your image and how releasing a certain piece of software reflects on your company.

You also have to do a lot of market research. Look at your competition and see what they are up to, otherwise you are just going to remain at this stage.

And there are hundreds of free animator tools available, to name just one:

Nice that you're thinking about tools that might be useful, but with this particular tool you're looking at something that could do with a few features just to perk it up a bit more. I might go as far as to suggest that you should seek some feedback from this community, I know you've had a general poor response, but if you seek it I'm sure members of this forum will be very constructive in terms of giving feedback. Many of us do it time-to-time on here, after all, it's very difficult to tell how other people are going to view it.

Anyway, the days before I had DBP, or heck, even DBC I still did some form of development, mostly crap stuff, but I used an old copy of PaintShop Pro, which came with an animation tool on the side, but the animation tool wasn't as well featured as PaintShop Pro, so I would do my frames in PSP and export them - it wasn't so bad as you have layers to play with too. Then I would just import everything into the animation program and everything worked.

So I think your idea could have some use, of course, you've got loads of other free software out there to compete with, but if you've just got something free on your site, you never know there's people out there who'll come across it and like it and then check out what else you've got to offer. And that's the point of free products in my opinion, to lure people to your other products. The pre-requisite of signing up to the forum will hinder that.

Though before the old Seppuku would download this, it would need to be more user friendly. I think something like the option to have a batch import would work, so you can import multiple images at once. Then add the ability to insert frames but also to move them about to customise the sequence, if you like - more artistic freedom, which is important for any artistic app.

@BiggAdd: Me and someone else brought up pretty similar concerns in the other thread and were promptly ignored.

Well I think the biggest unknown problem about the software not know by you guys is this was my first "office tool" I ever made like 4 or 5 months ago. I just finished it up recently because i got tired of people asking for it. When I made the tool, I was on a heavy learning curve with VB. If I remade the program, Im sure it would be better for everyone as a whole but I honestly did not design it orginally to distribute.

Compairing this to commerical products like photoshop, gimp etc is just crazy. Those guys had several people likely creating their software with a real artist's imput on things. Realisticly, I'm one person making simple tools to make my life easier for simple tasks. Also want to point out Ive used Gimp but i could not get it to work animation wise. I don't know why I could not get it to work but I'm not a artist or animator. Again I do simple tasks and produce simple things.

I do agree though Sepp, if I spent a little more time redesgining the software and made it more user friendly it could be extremely useful tool to some people. In the future I might rebuild it as well and revamp it. However, don't hold your breath, I counted all my software Ive created total and I have roughly 50 plus peice of software. Not counting the ones I lost in a format. So I have a lot of software I could rebuild. However I like to make stuff, play with it a few times, then throw it back in the toy box. Maybe some day I'll re-release this software again. Thanks Sep for feedback.

From the sounds of it, but correct me if I'm wrong, you seem to be wanting to develop your software professionally and having a website where you can stick your products available for people to use and buy to generate a bit of cash.

This is just going by your various threads. You seem to have a lot of ideas and throw out a lot of stuff as a result. You also want people who visit your site to stay for longer than a few seconds. My main advice would then be to pick your better ideas and work with them and spend more time to build on them to produce something people are more likely to use and not only that, but can be presented more professionally. Not necessarily choose this particular project, but one that you think you can work with and one you think people are likely to use. If you want feedback on what you want to work with, as I've said, this community is perfect.

Oh, I didn't even realise this was a repeat thread! I shall deal with this in a moment, but I'm actually "at" a party (our flat party).
It will also give you guys time to put in more input etc.

MOD Slacking off FTW!

EDIT: I have returned and I shall now lock this.
@old_school - please refrain from spamming the forums with multiple threads advertising products.

Cheers!

Thanks for advice Sepp. I think the problem in the past was I had ideas that were good but did not know how to make the really good ones, so i had to settle for small stuff until I could make the big ones. I'm still not a super awsome programer capable of writting some of my big ideas but I can write most of the software ideas now. This 2D tool was a older idea and I guess I was just beating a dead horse lol

On the flip side of the dead horse, I also feel strongly its best to complete a project rather then just let it set unfinished on a shelf. So now that the 2D tool is officaly completed, I can go back to my current project which is a big idea I had and its nearly completed. However, I wanted to take a break from it, so I drifted off into cyber space and went back an completed that old 2d tool. So hopefully I should be back on track now well back on track with current big project. I hope to have something to display soon.

Which brings me to a off topic question but kinda interested in hearing responses. I'm currently making a RPG which I honestly will likely never make one again unless I have a lot of help next go at it. Anyway, the base for any rpg is story line of course but I'm making a super old school style rpg. I hope this makes sense but I also want the story to load random messages when you go to battle based on your travel location picked. So would that still be a RPG?

Edit:
Quick question for those whom might know, how does source forge work? I thought about this and I thought you know this 2D tool currenty is not super useful but could be a good base for someone whom wanted to add on to it. Now of course I'm not doing anything with it currently so why not make it open source. An I hear source forge is a great place for open source stuff. So could I in theory post a peice of software and say here you go feel free to modfy it and repost but don't sell it? Is that possiable? Sorry for the newb question, Ive never used source forge but figured some of you have allready.

I would say so. I mean as long as it has the gameplay elements and there's still a bit of role play, then it'll still be an RPG, even if there's some randomisation.

Also, if you are doing an RPG, I know that you struggle a bit with grammar and on the forum I have absolutely no issue with it, but I think as far as your game is concerned it might be worth proofreading or getting somebody else to proofread the written content, spell/grammar check in MSWord should help a great deal too.

[edit]
Or, if you've got any questions on grammar or even plot/character for your RPG, I can answer to the best of my ability. We have a Game Design Theory board, so there's already a good place on the forum for ironing out some ideas.

Im not 100% on the storyline/concept how to make it work but I do have a few ideas. The best idea I think is this;

Setting:
Your reading through your old scrap book with your children telling them stories about your adventures. Your scrap book has several tabs filled with adventure stories inside labeled Forest, Desert, Dungeon, Mountains, Grasslands, Sea and Special.

Plot:
While reading the stories to your children, you drift back in time in your mind reliving your adventures as you read out loud. With each page turn, your excitement grows stronger and stronger.

Closeing:
Whe you reach level 30, your story reading ends with you telling your children you retired from adventuring but their time has just began. Right before it goes to closing credits, you pass your child a sword and the screen closes out.

Thats the storyline I was thinking about rolling ot with for the game. I needed something children could easly follow since the target audience is 5 to 10. However, I also wanted to make the game appealing to older gamers as well. I of course was shooting for instant classic but I don't think I can compete with Zelda lol
