If what they say is correct, you'd need to look into the x86 instruction set. This here is pretty decent : http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~evans/cs216/guides/x86.html

How do they know where the person is located if someone solves it? Knowing the IP isn't enough to pin-point their position. Especially if that someone has a laptop and is traveling.

I don't think that's the point. Pretty sure they can tell if you're a decent hacker in the interview process.
