Yay! After 7 or so years of Boy Scouting and an additional 5 or so years in Cub Scouts I finally earned my Eagle Scout award Scouting came up during lunch the other day and there a surprising number of my friends that haven't even heard of what scouting is. Out of curiosity how many other people here are or were involved with the Scouting program?

I was in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts (age 5-12) before I moved. After that I didn't really get back into it, since I didn't have any friends in it.

We weren't very big... I mean, it was free to join, because of how small we were.

I made it to Second Class in the Boy Scouts before calling it quits. Congratulations!

Awww, I thought you'd trained a bird of prey to operate like a UAV or something...

'Grats, I never did the scouts. They don't have quite the same reputation over here.

I made it to second class then called it quits but then joined Civil Air Patrol which I like a lot better. Although my older brother got his eagle about 3 months ago. CONGRATS!

Congradulations. I remember when my friend got an eagle scout and he was really hyped about it too altho he told me but i cant remember what the eagle scout rank gives you other than being the higest level of of the scout orgonisation.

I assume Eagle scouts recieve some political privilages? am i wrong?

I was at Life Rank before I quit unfortunately. Our Den mother died so they tried to merge us with another troop...we pretty much tried to kill each other every meeting, it was chaos. The whole troop ended up quitting.
Camping at camp Freelander every summer was the highlight of the year. Jamboree's were insanely awesome, was able to attend two of them myself. My first year we had a Sammy Hagar look alike rock out on a huge stage, even played 'I Can't Drive 55'...it might have even been him, that was over 20 years ago.

For the sake of the topic, this was my campfire blanket from when I was in Scouts... Most of the stuff on it just badges I've collected, and received for bottle drives, etc... It's not a lot, but it's seen a lot of smoke.

There are no set in stone privileges but Eagle Scouts generally have a better chance at getting jobs, getting accepted to colleges, things like that.

Ahh yeah, a lot of good memories at summer camp. Just getting away from the parents for a week was enough for me to enjoy

I built a medicinal herb garden consisting of 2 raised garden beds (12ft x 2ft each) and a fence surrounding the beds with a gate. Are you in the planning stages of your project or did you start the carrying out of it?

Congratulations! I got my Eagle a few years ago. Boy Scouts in general was a great time .

It is simply a recognition of achievement and particularly leadership ability. Many places respect it for that simply because it indicates that the person has practiced and demonstrated the ability to lead and work with other people.

I hear that the United States armed forces will automatically bump you up a rank if you go through officer training and are an Eagle Scout. That's the only government policy I know of.

I am putting the final touches on my eagle project packet to send in to be reviewed. The plan is to build a a patio area so that a developmental center building for wheelchairs has an area to have cookouts.

Make sure it's all typed and has all the proper signatures. Also be sure to include that there will be 2 adults at the project at all times. Two of my friends got theirs rejected the first time for those reasons

Great idea! Finding a project is the hardest part but you have a great one, good luck!

I got to Scouts and then got bored of it. Most of the sessions we had were too repetitive and we didn't do much that was interesting. Though when we did go camping, I liked it...but one time the guy next to be soiled himself in the middle of the night, so I can't say that was pleasant. I spent the rest of the night outside. Building a raft and take it out on the river, that was fun and I think that's all I remember about being a scout.

Anyway, congratulations!

[edit]

I didn't think of the whole thing making you employable, I can't say I've put on my CV "I was a Scout when I was 10/11". But I think any kind of voluntary activity that puts your skills into a positive light is useful for employment.
