I am just getting into 3D, and currently experimenting with meshes and limbs.
It seems that this method restricts me to using only primitive
objects (spheres, cones etc.)

Is it a good idea to continue learning meshes and limbs (there is probably more to them than I currently realise)?

Or should I now go for importing models from 3D files?

Thank you, Geoff

Hi Geoff

Generally, 3D files created in 3D modelling tools are used in games. There is little point in building complex tools in the engine when they already exist in third party modelling software.

The primitives such as cubes and spheres are useful for special effects and interactivity.

You can create any 3D shape you are capable of coding with meshes and vertices, but it is tedious.

Thank you, Chris, for your comments.
I have already got DBpro's Dark Matter 1, which I will now take a closer look at.

I have two more questions, please:-
1) Can you recommend other sources of completed 3D files.

2) If I ever get ambitious enough to try making my own models, which third party tools would you suggest (Google SketchUp for example?)

Hi there Geoff...
Answer to number 1... The tgc store has free objects and they state their compatibility with dbpro...

Did you purchase dark game studio? you get 3d crafter free with it... so try that...

Do you plan to create environments?...

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2101

this is cartography shop... 4... its free so give it a try and if you want to go all out buy 3d world studio...

hope this helped somewhat...

Thank you, Mr.Valentine, for your help.
I have now downloaded Cartography Shop, and located a few tutorials on YouTube.

I shall enjoy experimenting with that, together with Dark Matter 1.

I have kept a note of the other products you suggest. They will be of interest for my next stage.

Regards, Geoff

I've looked at Cshop, and it produces some terribly unoptimized models...

If you have the money, I recommend AC3D. I've been using it for 3.5 years, and it's by far the most payed-off tool I have. AC3D is great for landscapes, scenery, and it has a really powerful UV editor. However, it can get a little tricky if you want to make characters.

Milkshape 3D is great for making animated characters. I've never used it myself, but I've seen some great results from other people.

If you have the patience, Blender is one of the most powerful modelling tools out there, and it's for free. But man, it's a beast to understand... It took me 5 hours to learn how to make a cube o.O

And if you're looking for a free animation program, CharacterFX is the way to go.

Thank you, TheComet, for your input, and the links.
AC3D's demo video of a car on a track will keep me motivated to keep at it.
I have added your suggestions to my growing list.
Geoff.
