It's been awhile but I was going for an XP OS type of computer but i decided to go Linux OS instead. I've got myself a computer for $35 USD. It's only missing a harddrive. it's a Dell Dimension 9150.

Wahey, I've got one of those (9200? Pentium D + Nvidia 6800 GT) lying around somewhere. I really like the design of it actually, it was quite ahead of its time. And $35 for that is a bargain, although hard drive prices are up recently due to the flooding in Thailand so if you don't have a drive already, buy a small cheap IDE drive, then when the prices drop go and buy a new SATA drive to your liking.

pretty close mines is a 9150. Im thinking about going for a 500GB hard drive. im not in a rush for it. im going to be purchasing it during jan-feb. the computer contains only 512mb ddr memory so on January im going to upgrade it to 4GB DDR memory along with 9400GT/9800GT 1GB GPU. I'm going to make it run on Ubuntu OS. As for speakers im just going for the $89 USD 2.1 Bose speakers.

Hmm, I wouldn't bother getting something as good as a 9800GT if you're not going to be doing anything graphically intensive on it, obviously if you want to use it for modeling, graphic design or gaming then go for it.

4GB is probably overkill, but Ubuntu has become quite memory intensive of late (comparatively) so it may not be a bad idea. I think a better idea would be to replace that old Pentium 4 with something a bit newer from the Core 2 era - just make sure the FSB is compatible! It should speed things up greatly and the whole system should run quieter and cooler as Pentium 4s are power-hungry beasts.

i bought it for $35 USD so might as well maxed it out. i didn't want to go all out. maybe a 9400GT card. At first I wanted the 8800GT card but couldn't find one. btw will the Core 2 cpu be compatible with it? i know it's the same socket but i was googling it and heard from other forums that it might not be. i didn't want to risk it.

as for FSB compatibility, what about this one?

The Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo are both socket 755, the problem is whether your motherboard supports the FSB. A quick look up here reveals you can use anything with an FSB up to 1066 MHz, so the Pentium E6700 you linked should work fine.

not all processors are supported actually even if the fsb is right. A lot of it depends on the northbridge. Your best bet is to look at the list of the supported processors for your particular motherboard/computer.

so far it says that it supports either the hyper thread or the dual core. nothing more. so far it's only the dual core is the best option available. the core 2 duo is not compatible with mines as much as i've known about it. I have Vista Home premium 32 bit(had it since it first came out and never used nor opened) and just had the coolest idea. dual boot with Linux and Vista.

alright yesterday i just received the harddrive. got Xp pro to work. also got DB Pro to work fine on it as well. All i got to do now are memory sticks from Newegg and maybe a sound card. my speakers sound better in XP and i'm not sure why. lol btw it's also running on my old Radeon HD4350 512mb card. just found out when i first turned it on that it was a 2.8ghz dual core. i already got a 3.0ghz dual core as an upgrade.

here's another pic of the computer:
