In short my New Year resolutions for 2012 consist of...

- Completing several published applications both games and apps....

- Learn more advanced coding techniques...

- Develop applications that benefit users at all times. No time wasting apps...

- Support other developers through all my projects for 2012 and future. Not just once but continually...

- Set goals that are achievable...

- Make more friends and fewer enemies... [The last one cannot be helped sometimes]

- Have Fun... you have just one life... make the best of it always!!!

So what say you? [you do not need to match 7 just post as many as you like]

These are in no particular order my top 7 new year resolutions... yes 7 is my lucky number...

I have more but these are what come to mind for now as I might rejig it soon as your allowed 7 days into the year to clarify and revise your resolutions [my rules]

Err...well...what would I like to do in 2012?

-Not having the world end would be nice.

-Get thin again
-Get fit again
-Start up squash again - get back into Karate too
-Get a full-time permanent job - nothing temporary or part time
-Finish a game project
-Finish my novel
-Break my addiction from playing MMORPG's
-Get back into spoken word performances
-Start smoking and the give it up

-Not kill the first person who makes a new years desktop resolution joke, I tried that last year, sadly...the guy didn't make it. *Sigh* why do they always have to be so young?

I thought you only need 1 new year's resolution, but those are all my goals for 2012 anyway.

Yah that ruling the world thing could take some time... But working on it always helps, right?!?!?

Anyway, my main resolution is to pick my lazy butt up and stop procrastinating and finish the console by May at least!

I used to do Shotokan Karate, I actually stopped a few months before my black belt grading because I spent more time studying for exams and then going to Uni where I couldn't find a decent club. however, I'm sure your grading will be fine, you got plenty of time to practise.

Heh, I believe I've mentioned this a few ages ago, but I also take Shotakon karate. I've been practicing it for nearly 2 years now. I'm only a 4th kyu. Sensei's pretty strict on testing... Sometimes it's nearly 6-7 months before he grades people.

sweet mate, good stuff.

At our school we too have to demonstrate the necessary qualities before being offered the opportunity to grade.

If you train hard, attend class, listen and apply the information you can do a low level grading in about 3 months and a higher level gup(kue) grading in about 6 months.
(my advanced red grading took 6 months)

being ready for a black belt grading in November is a huge ask and Kiosa(teacher) says I should set out a training plan and aim for it.

hence my resolution.

Two big things:
-Keep studying math (I'm starting get to the crazy awesome stuff. So far just discrete math but once I'm done with that [soon] I can move onto analysis)
-Learn Special Relativity (Definitely possible by the end of the year)

I have a crapton more stuff I want to do (programming and game making included) but those are the two biggest ones.

Nice! I knew somebody on the forum had mentioned it, in fact I think more than 1 person has, I just couldn't remember who. The fact your Sensei is strict is a good thing, it's one of the things I love about Shotokan, because it actually pays off. When it comes to around 4th Kyu it pretty much is 6-7 months for us too, though for the earlier grade we managed to get people grading every 3 months.

Generally they'll only let you attempt a grading if they think you're ready. Though I almost failed my 1st Kyu on grounds of etiquette, I wasn't being rude, I was just exhausted as I was practising too much whilst the lower grades were grading. So a tip there, if you're waiting to go through, don't do too much practising because if they ask you to go through all the Kumite and Kata up to your current grade (our judges were cruel like that) then you might not have the energy to do it with the best etiquette.

-When in uni there isn't much time for other stuff but study I have found so... Study lots.
-Socially gather.
-Moving out of my dorm to flat with my girlfriend so I have to apply myself to cooking/cleaning and do my part!!
-Program more on projects I want to do, not just overdoing my university work. Although it is good practise

Er.

-Go to gym more since I still have a year of free gym access.
-Eat healthier.

Lots more but I'm too tired to think right now.

@ Karate sub-discussion,

Yeah, it's generally 3 months at least for some of the earlier ranks to be graded. I also think it's good for teachers to be strict. If you're not ready for the next rank, then some of the techniques introduced to you might be overwhelming.

The dojo I'm currently in focuses a lot on the control of power. Every technique is to be thrown at full power, including blocks and the like. Our sensei teaches us that our blocks are more suitable for strikes rather than blocks. Sort of less traditional, I suppose, but he's more into the real life application of things anyways. For example, during one of the recent student's test for their black belt, sensei introduced a pretty difficult challenge. He held up a ball point pen straight up with his middle and pointing finger and also his thumb. The student was required to take a stance and strike at the pen with full power and stop the punch before it's knocked out of the teacher's finger's. Obviously, not expecting the test, the student missed the pen completely or just knocked it out of his fingers after a few tries, but never completed the test perfectly. So the teacher failed him and told him he'd test him again when he was ready.

Needless to say, though, that that student carries around a pen with him almost wherever he goes, asking people to hold it up for him, haha.

Your Sensei sounds like he has the right idea. We practised control through sparring, but the pen test seems like a good way to get somebody thinking about it, but also a good way to practice without having a sparring partner, so useful homework that doesn't involve flooring your mates. I generally practised it against the wall...and my dad, but then he studied Karate with him, so the perfect excuse to beat him up (and for him to beat me up in return). However, he continued to do Karate when I stopped and is coming up to do his 2nd dan, meaning I've got some catching up to do.
