It's not that hard to make Human using blender. I learned from this book:

@ karate sub discussion

Quote: "I generally practised it against the wall"

I do the same but I practice my control using our conditioning post (basically a powerpole sized log wrapped in rope.
gotta hit it hard enough that you get value from conditioning practice, yet not so hard as to break your own bones.

we don't use the walls because according to Kiosa given enough time and repetition you will destroy the wall.

All our sparring is full power with shallow penetration so knowledge of range is critical. white belts rarely spar
and even purple and green belts have to leave a gap when throwing their technique.

It's pretty cool sparring with the third dans in that when they throw technique at you, their power, speed and control are so great
that impact feels like you've just been given an electric shock. full power and zero penetration, just surface contact.
That down to the millimeter control over penetration is awe inspiring.

I really appreciate it, as I am usually the crash test dummy for new students to get confidence up.
I basically have to spar them with the intention of defending myself badly
that can really hurt when they fluke a good technique.

When I was in my early-mid teens doing it, I was often quite cheeky towards the instructions so it often meant most of their demonstrations were done on me, mainly stuff like throwing and take downs. I think they took pride in doing that.

Competitions are also fun, but pretty insane, but it was difficult when it came to teams, we used to have to have a team of 5 people and people from our dojo used to say they were going to do it and then back out at the last minute. So generally I only got to do solo stuff, but I remember the 2005 competition - another dojo was missing a fighter and I teamed with them. I thought we were gonna do awesome because we were a team of a 3rd dan and 4 1st kyus, but then there was a team of a 4 blacks belts, one of them a 5th Dan and the last guy a 1st kyu. Guess who was the unlucky bastard to get the 5th dan?

damn, thats a pretty harsh match up for a competition. that really is bad luck.

I'm yet to enter a competition. the main one for our area is the national all styles comp.

I may enter one out of curiosity. See how I go.

I think the 3+ dans all fall under the veteran category so I should be ok there, but I will still be thrown in the deep end with the 1 to 2 dans.

on a side note, is 1st kyu provisional black in japanese karate? I always thought Kyus were 1 to 10 rather than 10 to 1.(our school is Korean, we have gups from 10(white) to 1(provisional black))

I think the Kyu and Gup grades are the same but just in different languages. For us 10th Kyu (lowest) to 1st Kyu (pre-black). In my association 1st Kyu is brown with 2 red stripes.

Our competitions were pretty much just within the association, so people from all the dojos across the area, so not all that flashy...nowhere near how people watching Karate kid might imagine competitions. Given our association places a massive emphasis on control most moves in the Karate Kid movies would be illegal - face/groin are off limits and you're not allowed to strike with your elbows. Though the points system is pretty much the same, so at least they got 1 thing accurate in those films!

If you're interested in entering, I say go for it, it's good fun and everybody tends to be a good sport about it. I suppose you do get your ego heads, I know one guy who used to fight with brute force instead of technique and one year it ended up with him getting disqualified. He was a lovely bloke and I've trained with him before, but you're not there to try and injure the other fighters.

@ Seppuku,

Haha, it seems you've gone and explained everything that I was getting ready to type, haha. I've had very similar experiences to you involving the competitions and whatnot. I'm also the practice dummy as well during training, haha. Our belt system is even the same (and I thought ours was not used that often).

@ Anybody who wants to read this,

I've entered competitions many of times over the past couple of years. One year I managed to bring home gold in each of the intermediate categories for our dojo and also earn the title grand champion for that tournament circuit. The circuit was a total of 4 competitions over the course of the year, and I earned gold in every category each competition. The categories include point sparring, kata, team kata, and weapons kata. We don't practice weapons at our dojo, so I have to practice at home as sort of self teach myself the techniques solely through books and the internet, haha. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not trying to sound big headed by bragging or anything, haha. Just trying to convey my experiences with tournaments and the like. The circuit that I'm referring to is mixed martial arts. This summer I'm likely to enter a traditional shotokan tournament. That's all white gis, full contact sparring, the works. It's full of some really talented people, so I'm likely going to have a handful with the competition, heh.

(for reference, intermediate level in these tournaments includes green belt to 3rd degree brown. Advanced being black and above, and novice level being yellow and below.)

But yeah, if you're going to enter tournaments and the like, then I definitely recommend it. It's a great experience, and everyone's a good sport and very respectful. But again, like Seppuku mentioned, there are some cocky people to deal with. None that I've particular had to deal with, as they are normally 1st dan and above, but I dread the day that I do. :S

Same way me and my dad learned weapons. Though we very rarely got to do some Bo stuff, there was 1 bo kata we were taught.

Because it's TGC and...this can happen a lot. However, alongside this convo there's plenty of other tangents in this thread. But everybody's talking about their New Year's resolutions, so I guess there's gonna be tangents. If anybody has a problem, I can shut my trap.

Not to offend anyone, but I don't really see why getting a girl friend should be a resolution. In all honesty, I would like one as well but I am not willing to make it a priority above other things, unless I'm looking for my soul mate to marry. That's just me wondering about everyone else.

I basically feel the same way as you do actually! I would prefer to marry my first girlfriend not that it is too likely though... Also, it's kind of a lower priority resolution, right down there at the bottom of the list lol!

The way I've always understood modding (I've not modded here, but have on another site) the better method is a lot more situational, of course there's rules, but how they're broken isn't necessarily a detriment to the forums or the community. Or conversely, if disruption is caused through actions not banned in the AUP (when I moderated on another site, the amount of people who lawyered the rules was immense), except of course under the bit that suggests the mods can act on their own discretion.

I'm sure it's a goal for many single men, but of course it'll only happen when you meet somebody you like and who in turn likes you...I'm not sure if it's something you can 'make' happen with a resolution. But of course, to each his own, nothing wrong with seeking to make the effort to improve your chances and if you've got the money, get a mail order bride. I kid of course, I'm a single bastard too, it seems all too common on a geek online community.

Yeah, I find it very interesting talking about martial arts with people from other styles.
There is a great level of curiosity I have to hear others perspectives and methods within the art form.
I've sorta let loose a Little in this thread, but am generally very self conscious about
discussing the subject in a public arena (so much can be badly misinterpreted) hence one of my retracted posts.

I guess its hard to explain to people how something perceived as being so brutal can be so peaceful at its core.
Karate is not just fighting or even a fighting style, it is a way of being, a way of understanding the nature of energy and the universe.
In a physical, emotional, spiritual, philosophical and conceptual sense.
these words don't even cut it, i'm falling short of the mark.
I'm trying hard to give a real view of karate, but the only way to know is to train in it.

As you can see It means a lot to me and i'm sure you other Karate guys can see the picture i am dismally failing to paint.

I guess to put it plainly, as a 2nd gup I am better off listening than speaking, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

so i'm shutting up.

Actually I think you've just explained it well. It's studying philosophy with your fists instead of a book...unless you decide to punch a hole through said book. There you go, there's a good Karate session, gather up as many copies of Kant's 'Critique of Pure Reason' as you can and have your partner hold them up as targets and then you see how hard you can kick them.

But yes, I do confuse people when I tell them Karate is about peace. Yes, I can kill you in several different ways, but I'd never do that. The point of learning about control in Karate is to avert a violent situation, because you can use what you know to stop somebody with the least amount of violence and we're told that includes running away if you are able to - not out of fear, but out of not causing damage where it's not necessary.

I used to do Karate when I was a kid. I liked learning the various techniques and forms and obsessively trying to perfect them, it was fun. I never liked the whole idea of "rank" and that someone can be your "master" and you have to do what he says. At the time I was just a kid, so it didn't bother me too much. But once I hit adolescence and became a rebellious teenager, I couldn't take it anymore. I'm a free American citizen! Why should I take orders from these people!

Now I do fencing. There is no rank system, just you and your opponent. And it's more of a game than Karate. Karate is ultimately all about self defense, there's no real rules only traditions. Fencing is a sport, governed by a complex set of rules. It's a friendly contest, not a battle.

As for the new year, I just plan on finishing the game I'm working on, or at least a working demo of it.

All right you primitive screwheads, listen up...

@ housewares - fencing sounds like good fun.

Karate isn't about being controlled but rather discovering self control.

the rank system helps develop humility, as well as giving students a feeling of accomplishment.

I find that I don't obey my master because I have to but rather because I want to,
and that is because the only commands he ever gives result in improvement in my technique and character.

respect is earned, and he has earned it in more individual moments than I can recount. and collectively through
his representation of martial virtue, which is displayed through his behavior and attitude.

rank doesn't bother me. I have no trouble accepting higher ranking members, and do not abuse my rank with juniors.

one thing that you learn after doing a few gradings is that the people with a higher rank really do understand elements of
martial arts you have no grasp of yet. that in its self is humbling. It's easy to think you are awesome and better than a senior,
then when you step up to your new grade, and have to learn the material that they can easily demonstrate(in some cases flawlessly), yet this same technique sits you on your butt and leaves you so confused you don't know which foot is forward, you find your place real fast.
