@kingofmk98:

Aww, I really wanted you to carry on with the community pack! Just because there is another community pack going on doesn't mean you can't continue one you started. Granted, it might be a better idea to wait untill that one's over and then start a thread, but don't let it discourage you. I know some said it sounded like a request, but that's more-or-less what a community pack is, a request, asking others to help you create a super-awesome pack for everyone to benefit from! Furthermore, let the MODs be the judge of whether a thread is a request thread or not. If it isn't a request (and doesn't violate other rules/AUP), then let it live on. If it is, then let them lock it. Anyway, you were very gracious in closing your pack as a community pack. Maybe you could reopen it to the community when that one closes! What is your goal to finish this by?

On topic, what kind of plants are you looking for? Ferns? Mushrooms? Grass? I'll produce stuff based on my work schedule; trying to settle back into what I need to do after taking off for Christmas and New Year's is mind-boggling and overloading right now.

Thanks, and good job.

that's pretty cool your making a Vietnam pack but for the guns, are you going to add the M-14? that was the original weapon for Vietnam? also for the guns again, are you going to make VietKong hands and US hands?

I was in Military Intelligence stationed at Cu Chi where the largest tunnel complex was located. The famed Cu Chi tunnel complex was 75 miles in length. Here is a diagram of it:

The following is inside a tunnel. They were never called ratholes and the entrances were always very well concealed.

Can you tell if there is a tunnel entrance in the following picture?

Here is the tunnel trap open:

The following is a youtube video of a couple of American tourists going into the Cu Chi tunnel complex.

The main weapons used:

At the start M-1, then M-14. The M-14 was used the most by US soldiers and then towards the end the M-16 was introduced. The side-arm weapon issued was the Colt 45. Indeed an outdated weapon as was the M-1 and M-14.

no you dont need to contribute anything to the pack
@F l a t l a n d e r People call it a rathole because they called the vietcong tunnel rats and i cant make the tunnels very skinny so i made them the best i could. Also i was going to put the m1 but i didnt want to do tones of weapons. Thanks For your services in the military

Thanks born for game.

@kingofmk98 Do not take offense. I wasn't suggesting you try to make them to look exactly like this. I just wanted to set the record straight and let possible future game developers using this pack know what they actually looked like. I realize that a game doesn't need to be 100% realistic. I like the fact that you are making a model pack of the Vietnam era. I believe Wizard of Id (is that his name?) was working on rounded tunnels. I'm not sure if they were ever finished. I need to do a search. Also, there have been some "cave" segments that might be used for this. It would be cool to have some actual rounded tunnels that would hook up to your "rathole" and make a place to sleep and for storage.

Again, do not take offense at the following. The Vietcong were never called tunnel rats. The tunnel rats were American, Australian and New Zealand soldiers who performed underground search and destroy missions during the Vietnam War.

The following is a pic I took and was retained by an Engineering Group which I believe was part of the 18th Brigade. The person going into the tunnel is the tunnel rat. This unit's job was to destroy any existing tunnels that were found and after they were searched. Part of the search and destroy missions of the Army. The special army unit would search the tunnels and the engineer group would destroy it.

http://www.olivetreegames.com/myimages/Tunnel_rats.jpg

Edit:

Also, a Vietnam war game would not be complete without tunnels. The mission to start looking for tunnels and destroying them didn't start until 1966. In 1965 President Johnson, ended the bombing of North Vietnam and tried to get them to come to the negotiating tables. This was called the "Peace Offensive." However, Hanoi refused any negotiations. Therefore, the bombing resumed and a new offensive of shutting down the Vietcong offensive began in 1966. Much of their storage facilities were in these tunnels. Also, the reason that the Cu Chi tunnels were so important was because Cu Chi is only about 20 miles from Saigon.

@Kingofmk: You should consider yourself lucky to be getting so much primary source info which can only help you while modelling.

@Terry; Thanks for your service mate. I've bookmarked this thread just incase I decide to do a vietnam pack. We need to get back in touch sometime soon, haven't talked in a while!

Cheers,
Anayar

@kingofmk: And I for my part, wasn't trying to say you were sounding mean, but rather that you should just admire your luck... It's not everyday a nam vet comes along and gives you modelling advice

Cheers,
Anayar

No but you should state the original creator. I've made an m14 but it's the modern battle rifle variant, but since I had modeled that I should be able to make the original, however there already is an m14 in the modern warfare community pack which uses the same hands that I rig to. I might try covering it in some camoflage material provided i can get it done.

Many of the needed weapons and models for a Vietnam War game can be found in older threads (not all, but many). The biggest deficit is one of the hardest to create -- characters. As far as I know, the only Vietnam War "character" was an EAI re-texture of a stock character to Viet Cong. Surprised no one has created an official Vietnam pack.
