Little ironic though that you can still view the pages by simply let the page not fully load and pressing stop before the black page replaces what you see.

You referring to wiki? If so, I also thought that at first. Turns out you have to specifically select the English wiki - it's the only one affected. There's also a few seconds delay. Try this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

or any English article (http://en.wikipedia.org/etc) Should black in a second or two. "Should" being the operative word though.

If you read more on why they're doing it on Wikipedia, they say they're deliberately not making it impossible for you to access it. You just have to turn off Javascript. The point is to draw attention to their cause, that's all.

What annoys me is that the power that SOPA and PIPA would give media corporations is explained as a sort of side-effect from a mistake in the writing of the bills, but that's exactly what they were created for. Corporations don't like the fact that they have no control over what people say about their products or their competitors, they don't like the fact that people are choosing to watch original content uploaded by independent people and play indie games instead of buy their products. They want to take back control of the airwaves because free-speech and freedom of expression on the internet is costing them money. That's the only reason for these bills. "Stop Online Piracy" and "Protect IP" are just cover names, they know most politicians don't even read these bills and will just vote on whatever sounds good.

Exactly OBese87. It's not surprising that big companies want that, after all, it's in their DNA to simply want to make more money all the time. That's fine, competition is good. Governments are there however not to help them, but to regulate them. If the US government is taking sides with the corporations, who do the people have? Thank goodness we have powerful allies like Google on our side, but I fear it's not enough. Google are a company. Wikipedia are a company. They're not lobbyists.

This is going to sound real funny

but anybody seen the movie :p Charlie Wilsons War?

Point in principle... nobody in the american government reads anything...

Why dont they target second hand retailers... they do most of the harm to all three industries and more... music video games hardware(phones...mp3...graphics...etc) not that sites like Ebay are bad or Amazon... but not saying they give anything to the manufacturers but those crummy retail shops that sell second hand stuff they dont even let you claim back the VAT its printed on their receipts... Even though theyre registered for VAT... (I know its a buy in VAT aka input TAX) anyway just think theyre targeting the wrong end... and no wonder people say the movie industry has no brains and no wonder those writers were (are still?) striking...

I don't think that's a good thing, it's like you wouldn't even own the games you bought. Why do the digital media think they deserve different treatment to everyone else? What is so special about a game or film that means it shouldn't be resold? You can resell a table or a TV and the manufacturers don't complain. Yeah I understand that what they are selling is an experience, and you're more likely to trade in a game than a table but they've sold it, they don't own that copy any more.

hear hear, obese.

As president for well over 6 months, I hereby abolish all forms of licensing and DRM on any and all TVs and tables.

I cannot abolish digital licenses because I would be in violation of my M$ Eula. Sorry all!

The little trumpet on your badge gets me every time, I feel like a fanfare should play when there's a new post by the president.

Does this decree include nested tables?

My point was

Quote: "practically anything that can transfer large files securely"

it doesnt hav eto transfer large files to be affected by SOPA -> a simple picture is enough.

As far as i know, that is actually incorrect. The company still owns the copy, YOU own the license to use it... So theoretically they still have complete control over the copy.

Ah i see... Well i hope what ever it is that you will get a break and a good one!

Yah, the government mixed with technology just doesnt work. They give some companies too much power, for example Apple now has patents that make it virtually impossible to make any sort of multitouch screen interface... America's government was made back in the 1700's, and we are still using it today and it just doesnt work today over 200 years later...

We wouldn't even be able to upload avatar pictures, TGC would remove them because there's a risk someone could upload a copyrighted image, and if TGC allowed that happen they could be sued. The only alternative is to check every upload before it is displayed on the web, which is physically impossible.

they would quite frankly have to disable images overall and possibly even links (dunno if linking to an illegal site would be in the frames of this law)

so yeah, a booring forum we would indeed have

yes it is, but the whole site would be shut down, that was the point i think =P UNLESS they prevent it

although, isnt this webbsite in UK?
if so, it would only be censored for USA guys

Yes, a DMCA notice would mean TGC would then have to remove it. (since they're in the UK, I guess they may not have to, not sure how international law would work in that case)

Quote: "although, isnt this webbsite in UK?

TGC could lose their domain, adwords, and if they have a US payment processor, kiss that goodbye too.

If TGC chose to ignore or otherwise didn't comply with notice of infringing content (perhaps it was not infringing), the company could notify any payment processor/ad provider about the infringment and to cease serving TGC. They would have to by law stop. A judge wouldn't have had to be involved. Once TGC lost everything, then they could go to court about it (in the states of course, so good luck TGC).

And if you think sopa/pipa are the end of it, think again. It's going to be a long time before we get competent and honest politicians in power again.

Keep your eyes peeled.

Aren't you all overacting this, just a bit?

Actually quite a bit...

..."illegal avatars"? WHAT!?

I mean, come on, will for example the police tear down your T-shirt if it shows your favorite character from somewhere? I think nope.

What - theoretically - shortens someone's, or a company's business IS ILLEGAL, and should follow legal actions. Pictures randomly appearing won't do any harm to anybody's business, and therefore no worries.

How did we arrive to these childish fears from cracked games and uploaded movies?

IF by any chance this law, which i know little of, it isn't easy to get to know it since everybody just pukes out these idiotic fear instead of facts... so if this law really would permit those what you are saying, well then it is not a strict law, but rather a very stupid law.

-Mental Hybrid: A unique heavy story based shoot'em ~40% (primary project)
-CoreFleet: An underground commander unit based RTS (canned) ~15%

If the law said they HAD TO then yes. But now, if you buy an T-shirt with your fav character from somewhere then its very likely you bought it from the company that owns the character.

My youtube playlist and favouritess will vanish too.

Oh no, and the pictures on my FB of the zoo. Dang! Down with SOPA for trying that...
