Geek Culture / Is this a Xmas banking fraud or just the usual foul up?

I would advise anyone who uses internet banking to pay their regular credit card and other bills to check their recent statements carefully.

Just before Xmas I paid one of my credit card bills from Bank B in the usual way using the standard Internet "Faster Payment" procedure (as I do every month) using an account with Bank A. When I received my January credit card statement from Bank B the payment wasn't there. At first I thought I'd overlooked it (not unknown ) or paid it into the wrong account (possible as my wife has a similar credit card account and I deal with both). However, Bank A assures me that it was paid into the correct account at Bank B whereas Bank B insist that it wasn't and is trying to charge me interest etc for a missed payment.

What amazes me about this is that each bank tells me to sort the problem out with the other bank. It seems to me that they are the ones who need to sort it out between themselves - and that their IT technicians are probably the ones who need to investigate.

Also, where has the money gone? Bank A says it is probably in a temporary "holding" or "suspense" account with Bank B. The people I spoke to at Bank B didn't seem to know such a thing existed. Perhaps this is the tip of a massive bank fraud and someone is pocketing thousands of "missing" payments?

I'm now waiting for written evidence from Bank A that the payment was made so I can take the evidence to Bank B. Yes, "take" - I intend to physically take it to Bank B as I certainly wouldn't consider sending it by post to them - they would probably only claim they hadn't received that either...

My guess is a foul-up at Bank B but I'm not sure. Watch this space.

Anyone else had a similar experience recently?

Kind of odd. I'd personally start thinking of a completely different bank to do business at. One that values their customers

One? Don't you mean two? They are both being unhelpful at the moment.

I'm not at all convinced that changing would achieve anything.

haha, well I found a local bank that does pretty well. They're not perfect, nobody is, but I like smaller local banks, personally.

It will almost definitely be in a holding account at Bank B. Despite them being able to identify the transaction because it's come from a regular source and has your name on it, they'll claim they did not know for which account is was intended. Then even though they have your money, albeit in the holding account, they'll charge interest for late payment - even though they have your money!

This happened to me, so I said OK, I'll pay it off then close the account thank you very much. After much muttering and mumbling, they said that as an exception this time, they'll waive the charges. I said that as an exception this time, I'll leave the account open!

Update!!!

It was Bank B's fault. My wife's credit account bill turned up today and guess where my missing payment turned up. A prize for the first correct answer.

Makes you wonder what's the point of giving an account number in an automated payment system. I guess one step involves a human chimpanzee transcribing the transactions in Gothic script. Probably done during the bank's Xmas party.

Bank B now admits the error and assures me the error will be fixed by Monday. Wait for the next thrilling instalment.

The wonders of modern computerised accounting systems, eh?

Fixed!!

I got a letter the other day, threatening me with either a £5000 fine, or 3 months jail, because I'd failed to send certain details to someone. Turns out it was a 'system error' and I can just ignore the letter!!

Don't have credit cards to begin with.

Why do you need one if you have money?

If you don't, don't spend.

While I wish that was possible you do need to build up a credit score in order to get any loans. Sometimes you have to live paycheck by paycheck primarily right out of college. Though I do wish I could avoid credit cards completely.

If you get finance-savvy, you'll need a credit card or two to play the game, and it's a fun game with nice rewards. I have made up to £600 GBP in a year on clever credit card use (saving over £800 after cumulative interest savings on a mortgage). The best of it is, you are playing against the companies that are causing the current financial grief, so it's winning financially without breaking any moral stance.

I don't "need" one. It's just more convenient and (usually ) safer than carrying around lots of cash. Cheques are being phased out and not all outlets accept the other options such as debit cards or PayPal. Simple really.

Indeed. Except when I make a silly error I never pay interest on my credit card balances - but the credit card companies have recently made that more difficult by shortening the free time before interest is applied. Remains to be seen whether bank B will remove the late payment charges caused by their error - not to mention their threat to damage my credit rating.
