http://blog.whiletrue.com/2012/01/visual-studio-achievements-now-a-reality/

Basically a blog post made a parody that everything now has achievements so why not visual studio. Apparently microsoft either took it seriously or wanted everyone to join in on the humor.

LOL. I expect we'll have our very own representative on the leader board soon.

Microsoft Office already has a plugin called 'Ribbon Hero', the idea is you can get points for achieving different things in Office programs. It also sets challenges and Ribbon Hero 2 now turns MS Office into a game. I think in one respect it's actually a cool idea as far as learning goes. Yes...it's a little hard to get excited about using an Office product, but kudos for being creative. So I guess it's not really a surprise for MS to try something similar with other products.

Sadly, it means clippy is back.

Channel 9 is an awsome site for learning. I use this site often for tuts on VB. This is just one example of people thinking out side the box. Love the concept.

10 points awarded for achievement you found the nav bar

Who cares that they refuse to work on C99 support when they add in achievements instead?

Seriously though, this is kind of a slap in the face to anyone pushing for features in the actual compiler that have been refused due to lack of resources etc. (they have the time to implement this... but nothing actually important. Zwah?)

I'm confussed by his comment, where did this come from? Everyone was saying great idea etc then this comment. sorry maybe my brain can't process your logic fast enough to understand how you go from comments liking it, to who cares if they refuse to work with C99.

It was sarcasm (not in response to anyone else) referencing the fact that MS have on several occasions refused to implement compiler features in Visual Studio due to 'lack of resources' but can somehow find the time to implement achievements. Having been on the receiving end of their shoddy support for stuff like C99 it comes as a bit of a slap in the face to see (admittedly amusing) time wasters like this make the cut

The team that made this extension are the same team that work on the IDE itself and possibly the compiler for Visual C/C++. He's frustrated that they spent their time making this extension instead of fixing the various bugs in their primary software.

Never had a problem with Visual Studio my self. I use Pro version but I love it. Likely one of the best tools out there for programing.

Apart from the fact that nothing indicates it's by the same team that works on the compiler, or even the IDE. The achievements plugin was made by the channel 9 team, not the compiler team.

Kinda like complaining that Adobe hasn't implemented feature X in Photoshop because they've been wasting their time releasing updates for Reader .

You do realise it's a joke right? What purpose would hollow achievements in a programming IDE really serve?

A lot of people enjoy the idea of achievment. I personaly strive to complete my goals on time/on budget. This system is just a simple way to pat your self on the back for job well done. I don't think its going to change the world or bring world peace but it was a great idea. To be blunt, if you don't like the idea, I guess you don't have to use it. On the flip side, it is a great exsample of someone thinking outside the box. Not to sound rude but to be blunt if you have a better idea please share it.

Have you ever worked on a big project before? Personally, if I'm working on tough issues, I quite enjoy taking a few minutes or spending a few hours here and there on something fun from the "icebox". Maybe this was developed by some interns and not one of the hardcore compiler engineers?

Totally think this is a good use of an achievements system not for steam games or the like... [dont play xbox games or ps3 so shoe me] I barely give a darn about achievements in games as sometimes they are down right stupid... but fair game if your a hard core gamer and want something to keep you playing...

But for me a coding achievement system would make me feel better unlike trying to turn to someone [wife] and boasting IVE DONE IT and getting the response... uh ok... dinners done...

I don't need achievements to accomplish this feeling.

I get that feeling when it actually compiles.
