This DarkBASIC game as found on Steam would contradict that idea...

that's one exception, no characters, how many games like that can you count? (which are 3D and popular)

Oops, I think I was misunderstood.

I just meant that with DX10+, one would be able to use new features and possibly make games with better graphics. However, after seeing the video that Comet posted... there's not really a difference at all, is there?

I failed to notice anything different between those two comparisons as well... what should I be looking for?

peaople, we are talking about dbpro here. Add all that effects in dbpro, add some characters and frame rate drops to zero. With dx10 or 11 we would be able to have that effects with frame rates above zero.

I've seen some ambitious projects in DBP that use fancy effects like the ones in the video (with smaller scale worlds). Not all of it drops to zero if you use clever tricks.

Not necessarily. Didn't we just have a bunch of people tell us in this thread that sometimes enabling DX10 caused slow downs? It depends on each person's computer though.

EDIT: This is why I mentioned OGL and AppGameKit in one of my earlier posts. OpenGL, I've heard, can be faster than DirectX. It also gives the programmer the ability to recompile it for different platforms and thus multi-platform games made a with a TGC product are now doable. Can't wait until they add 3D support.

It isn't that noticeable, is it This video shows the difference. It is pretty significant. What it does is it subdivides the mesh so it looks a lot more detailed.

Apart from that feature and a few other "optimisations", DX9 is still fine to work with.

Very cool Comet.

Regarding graphics, let us not forget about the other aspect of a good game; which is good gameplay. Alot of people out there play games because they are fun; although it is nice to push your new GPU to the limit when you get one to show off to your friends.

There are loads of games out there that do not look that good that are taking in millions of not just cash, but millions of sales every year just because the game is fun. Think Minecraft/WOW etc, not the best graphics but they probably made more than a couple new sales by the time I finish typing this post...

Just the same way a car can be a success just for its performance, not just its looks. If you spend more time focusing on performance, performance is what you will get.

I can testify that when I first put my character in the screen the frame rate drops by half. The amount of polygons in the camera view has a deep impact on framerate.

So I have two versions, low poly for distant shots, and a higher poly model for close ups; optimization like this helped me gain an extra 80 uncapped FPS, and I have not yet begun to optimize officially; and I have not yet started to use Dark Imposters & and Dark Occlusion is on its way...

Can definitely notice the difference in that video.

Now that I have some extraish money, I may purchase Dark Occlusion soon and use it in my simple platformer game just to get framerates well above 500+.

I wondered what TheComet was driving at until I was about half way through the first video. Here are two typical screenshots which I think illustrate what he meant.

A bit like parallax mapping on steroids.

Yeah the staircase bit was the cracker for me. Lol; one plane mesh, many stair cases. Now that's what you call shading.

I wonder if XNA lets you take advantage of tesselation?
