Regarding graphics, let us not forget about the other aspect of a good game; which is good gameplay. Alot of people out there play games because they are fun; although it is nice to push your new GPU to the limit when you get one to show off to your friends.
There are loads of games out there that do not look that good that are taking in millions of not just cash, but millions of sales every year just because the game is fun. Think Minecraft/WOW etc, not the best graphics but they probably made more than a couple new sales by the time I finish typing this post...
Just the same way a car can be a success just for its performance, not just its looks. If you spend more time focusing on performance, performance is what you will get.

I can testify that when I first put my character in the screen the frame rate drops by half. The amount of polygons in the camera view has a deep impact on framerate.
So I have two versions, low poly for distant shots, and a higher poly model for close ups; optimization like this helped me gain an extra 80 uncapped FPS, and I have not yet begun to optimize officially; and I have not yet started to use Dark Imposters & and Dark Occlusion is on its way...
