Hi guys been a while since my last GC thread but felt this was the best place for this...

I started looking at creating game textures and searched on YT as a first point of call

Quote: "creating game textures"

Was my search phrase [Please let me know if you guys know any good resourcess as I suck in this area and do not know where to begin - Thanks in advance]

Anyway moving back to my original concern...

I found this video

[wonder if that links up properly...]

I suddenly got very concerned for everyone out there... this is in essnse an easy way to steal secured textures... this guy should be stopped... [besides his voice is very irritating...]

but anyhoo... what say you?

I feel this undermines everyones efforts to secure their game assets... hmm...

Also I saw some interesting Shenmue modded scenes I am wondering how they did that stuff...

I wonder what everyone thinks about this...

It's an interesting topic.

As long as people don't rip the textures and make profit out of them, I'm fine with this kind of modding. I also want my character in Dead Space to be red

I'm never concerned about people stealing my media. It happens anyway even when you do encrypt it, so why waste brain space on securing your media when you could be using it somewhere else?

There are entire communities dedicated to ripping media from games.

Xnalara is the worst offender for it, it lets you rip media or download uploaded ones and 'pose' them. On deviant'art', its considered a art form now where people claim to have made the assets themselves. Point and example!

So i wouldn't bother too much. Though if they try to sell your assets in a game or in any other way, you can then sue them. Basically it's nothing to worry about since people don't get very far on stolen work. Pretty much there options are:
A; They get a job and cant preform to 'there portfolio' standard.
B; Someone recognises the work and red flags that person.
C; They carry on and get know where in life.

So yeah wouldn't worry too much.

Yes but Quik... Perhaps because you created those models however some resellers make their licences kinda dificult...

Some in plain english state...

YOU can use these/this model in your productions but may not make available to third parties these models accessible in any way...

So this modding somewhat violates this licence somewhat...

As the textures would be included... regardless whether the end user does it for modding or not... YOU are violating your licence so therefore must pass this on to users... and we all know where that debate will go...

No matter how much time you spend trying to protect your media, someone will beat you - for every security expert there's an equally good or better hacker, so don't waste your time.

You're fretting over media protection rather than spending the time actually making the game.

You're welcome to sue anybody you catch using your content, personally, if somebody was using my content (and I guess I'd be flattered) to create a personal project they have no intention of making money with, or to mod or to make a fan-based game or whatever non-commercial purpose (so long as it's not a remake), then I would have no problem. Heck, I borrow bits of media I can find for proto-typing, it just makes the process a bit easier before you have to worry about your own media, though I don't use it as my own.

However, I'm not worried because I have to at least finish a game first and in all my years spamming these forums, I have yet to achieve that. So I would say, don't let it worry you, if you see your stuff being used then chase it up. Anything you make and distribute can be stolen, it's probably easier to catch a thief than to prevent one from stealing.
