I have seen that people out there are modding games like eg. skyrim. I'm not intrested in either playing mods or make them.
But what I am intrested is knowing if there are modders kits or source code released by the respective company for each and every game that is being modded?

If not, this would be illegal to do?

Anyone knows?

I can't speak for EVERY game but Bethesda supplies a modding tool for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3. Torchlight also came with a nice modding tool. Anyway, if modding the game is against the company's license agreement then it would be illegal. Though, I doubt the company will waste time and money if the mod is free and does not harm the game's reputation.

Yeah usually developers release the tools so people can mod them. The modding community is quite strong and perfectly legal, of course not every developer gives people the ability to mod their game, so I'm sure illegal mods out there exist. Some of the mods for Oblivion are fantastic and if you've got the PC version it's worth checking some out.

Valve is another company who does it, they allow people to use their engine 'Source' freely, which you can download off of Steam and people are able mod any of the games made by Valve. I remember encountering a really cool mod made in source, which I can't remember the name of sadly but it was basically a complete new game in a 3rd person perspective in a fantasy world completely using their own assets.

So if modding is something that interests you, check out some of the engines out there.

I'd say that modding definitely extends the shelf life of a game. Valve know this so well, and modding games like Skyrim would probably make it that you could never run out of things to do.

You have a point there,,, I was against modding til now. First of all I thought that most of the time this was illegal, second of all I didn't get the catch,,, Why let people mod your game? But now it's getting clearer,,, thanks CoffeeGrunt and the others for your nice replies.

Generally with a mod you have to own the actual game in order to play it and people would be breaking the law if they distribute the game with it. Mods themselves tend to be free and so the game companies don't lose anything out of it. Heck, I'm sure they benefit from it.

I wonder how many people now are excited when Bethesda release a new game because they can't wait to see how they can mod it? Or how many people who home in to buy the PC version just so they can mod. I suppose it also gives a boost to the PC market. If I had a powerful enough laptop, I'm sure I'd own the PC version of Skyrim.

I own the PC version of skyrim, never played it on a console. Wonder if they are all the same?

You know, I own Tom raider underworld on wii, and it is almost a completely different game than versions for other consoles and pc. No level are the same

I'd kind of feel sorry for Tom if we were raiding him all the time.

I think Skyrim is the same across all versions, except of course you can mod the PC version and none of the others.

depends, doesnt it? Victoria doesnt have any modding tools, just people mocking about in files, however Paradox supports this fully
S.T.A.L.K.E.R is very much popular in modding community, doesnt have any official modding tools as far as iam aware..

Anyone remember the Tomb Raider 1 Nude mod? Those were the days.

The strange thing is, when coming up with a list of examples that was the only one I can think of...hence I didn't use any examples.

One mod that comes to mind for being illegal and causing a whole mess of problems was the hot coffee mod for GTA San Andreas. Though it probably helped Rockstar in the end due to the publicity
