well here it is. it's a dell gx280. i might think about making my own arcade with parts from this place. using an old big tv and just the joysticks and a decent 2.1 or a 3.1 giant speakers.

In my opinion, these Dells are terrible. We had some at school and we still have some. The Dell motherboards are just freaking werid. I doubt you will be able to create much out of a P4. I do see some advantage in the PCIE slot and the DDR2 RAM.

I used to manage a network with numerous Dellgx280's ~ not they any more problematic than every other brand I've dealt with (honestly had more issue with IBM Thinkpads,, and enough headaches with Compaqs (pre HP take over) than I care to recall) ~ But I would suggest routinely using compressed air for the power-supply's fan and associate case airflow ports, as they seemed to be my biggest problem with this model.

Perhaps it was due to a dusty environment, but this model (as well as the gx260) were particularly sensitive to heating/breathing problems. The power supply is proprietary to DELL (though there may be generics avail, it's not your everyday PS that people have kicking around). I had far too many fail/burn-out on me.

I wasn't a fan of there quick release rail system (it made it quick to move things around),, but in my environment it actually meant more work for me to replace hardware,, having to attach their rails and such. I personally wasn't a fan of the clam-shell case,, but I got used to it. Shouldn't be as big of an issue dealing with one of them.

The Optiplex line of Dells are brilliant with regards to reliability (have a look on YouTube for a series on how much testing they put them through). I thought it would be fun to use one for a project, so I picked up a small form factor Optiplex 755 off eBay for £50 with 1GB DDR RAM and a Core 2 Duo processor. After some serious modding (read: cutting large parts out with a dremel, splicing and soldering wires) I now have an awesome LAN party rig - Core 2 Quad, GTS 450 (don't knock it, it's actually not half bad - it's also as good as it gets if you're restricted to low-profile cards ), 8GB RAM, an SSD and a 500GB 2.5" drive for games. I also replaced all the fans on it (was a bitch, I had to figure out what all the wires on their proprietary headers did) and it's now whisper-quiet. The only thing left to do now is to replace the GPU fan with a fat heatsink.

In short, you'll have a great time trying to make it do the impossible :p Good luck with your project!

You can do quite a bit with a p4 2.8. It's certainly fast enough to run Windows 7 nicely. Put in a leaner OS though if you're going to be emulating. You could also check the mobo and see how far you can upgrade the cpu. You might be able to get a substantial upgrade for chump change on ebay. Who knows! If your emulator of choice is single threaded, the clock rate and onboard cache is where it's going to make a big difference anyway.

Looks like a good machine for a Linux box if you ask me. Add MAME, arcade controls and an old or self built arcade cabinet and you got yourself a decent arcade machine.

i wanted to do what data 98junkiee was thinking. it will be XP pro/home with dual booting either Arch linux or Ubuntu using MAME. trying to build it into a mini arcade machine with the X Arcade controller.

Yeah friend of mine did that. His MAME cabinet is seriously cool with 4 joysticks (Gauntlet!!!!) and trackballs. Works fine for all the old arcade MAME games and it's less powerful than that P4. I mean really how much processing power do you need to run Outrun?...

Cheers
