I recently got my eyes tested, I knew i was a bit short sighted but never realized the full scope of it.

I got my new glasses just before and put them on and almost felt sick from the information overload my eyes were experiencing.

the main reason Im writing this here, is one of the first thoughts i had walking out of the optometrist.

I looked up at a tree and had to laugh out loud.
the thing is, I have the tree party plugin for dark basic, and I always thought the way the leaves looked seemed a bit fake and over done.
but looking up at that tree, my first though was damn, that looks like tree party leaves, maybe they aren't so fake.

like the title says I went from a doom2 detail level right up to halflife 2 and then some.

I'm not good enough at maths to put a percentage increase on my range of vision, but walking home i was testing out glasses on glasses off and realized that things become blury about 10 cm away from my nose, and im really quite shocked by the vision I've been tolerating.
now i can see my fingerprints at full arm extension and take great pleasure in reading street signs and distant writing.
faces appear on the people across the street, my hd tv looks hd!
I can look out my window and see right across the bay, not only the land, but the sand and the green of the plants. the water has whitecaps.

generally I pay attention to things that are within about 10-15 feet of me because everything else is a bit vague.
now stuff is clear right to the end of my line of sight.

this may seem boring to some or old news to others, but im 28 and just realized what the world looks like.

I think I'll go for a walk.

I know that feeling

I got my glasses about half a year ago. I always knew my eyes weren't the best, I even had prescriptions for glasses before, but didn't want them because I didn't think it is that bad (after all I can see everything in the range of about 2 meters, and it only gets blurry at greater distances.) But still, when I got glasses and accepted I had to wear them it was quite a difference. For example watching TV as you mentioned. Unless I'm very very close to the screen, the details start to blur already; but that's what I was used to all my life; same for being outside etc. I just didn't think my eyes were that bad! But nowadays I appreciate putting on my glasses to watch TV in all it's crispyness I usually don't wear them at home (like right now in front of the laptop), and still sometimes go outside without them, until I realize after walking a few meters that everything is blurry, and I have to go back to get my glasses (let's hope I'm not missing the bus again when that happens ).
But yeah, I'm 19... and you're 28 and your short sight even seems to be a little worse than mine? How did you not notice that
So anyways, congratulations to your World 2.0 HD upgrade

Train your eyes (by zooming in and out from time to time to close and far away objects) till it's too late, once you put glasses on, it will just get worse over time.

Really? Where did you get this information? I've had to wear glasses since I was 8. For the past 10 years my prescription hasn't changed.

I've had specs since I was five. My vision kept deteriorating 'til about the age of eleven, where it's stayed level ever since.

I do love that feeling of getting a new pair of specs, though. Everything is suddenly almost uncomfortably better and more detailed.

I like you, thought it wasnt that bad. As they gradually got worse i lost reference of what good sight was. I am enjoying it. the most simple things give me much pleasure, I looked at the moon last night!

That is good to know, I too bought into that myth, and was afraid to wear glasses for fear of my eyes getting lazy. ive been reassured that there is a period of degeneration(with or without glasses) and then they get a little better, and i will never need reading glasses(that is a relief)

Quote: "I do love that feeling of getting a new pair of specs, though. Everything is suddenly almost uncomfortably better and more detailed. "

yeah, i nearly threw up when first wearing them, I kept looking into the distant regions and where there were supposed to be blocks of color there was detail, it took my brain a second to realize there was more information there to be seen. I still have to consciously make an effort observe distant detail as my brain switches to abstract mode at distance.

i must say that I was afraid that once i got used to wearing them I would have to keep wearing them, so if i stayed used to my vision it wouldnt matter, but damn, after putting them on i realize ive been seeing next to nothing for years.
very cool, thanks for your congrats and reassurances.

one side note, now i can see faces sooooo much further away its a little awkward while walking, recognising and making eye contact with someone when there is so much time until we pass by. before, by the time i had seen their face they were directly passing me, and now i realize people look at each other a lot and from great distance, its strange.

I guess i'll get used to it.

Didn't you have any trouble at school with seeing blackboards and stuff? - that's when I realised I needed glasses.

I don't like wearing them outside, my eyes are weird - if I wear glasses or contacts outside then it warps my perception, it kinda makes it feel like I'm about 4ft tall, when I'm more like 6ft, like the world is running at the wrong aspect ratio. I don't even notice that when in doors. I wear glasses when at home, for viewing TV and stuff.

If you like glasses, you'll bloomin love contact lenses. I got sick of them curling up in the corner of my eye, drying up etc, but you should definitely try the disposable contacts. Don't be a wuss about putting them in or out - it's easy, the soft contact lens gets sucked onto your eye by itself, you just have to get one part of the lens onto the eye - no touching the eye with your finger or anything like that. Personally I prefer glasses (seems the most civilised option), but you should keep your options open, even having lasek might be an idea but let your eyes get used to seeing properly first.

yeah, thats when i had my first pair, in year 11 i was borderline shortsighted and needed them to read the whiteboard. I never wore them anyplace other than the classroom. about a year after graduating school, i stepped on them mangling them quite badly. I never had them replaced.
that was about 11 years ago.

i may give contacts a go, i find it a little strange having a border to the clarity via glasses. I am a bit wussy about touching my eyes, but will give it a go on your recommendation.

i dont know if ill do the laser thing, a lot of older people have issues with far sightedness. aparently shortsightedness counteracts this, but if you do laser you go back to normal, i use computers a lot(like everyone here) and want my close vision.

yeah, at the moment i feel like the dr seuss worm, who can see all the way round the world to the back of his own head, the range is too far for me to feel comfortable with. but granted this is day 2 so i have to just go with the flow for a while.

its all for the better, It was just such an impact realizing how small a world i was living in. The strangest things fascinate me now.

I've had glasses since about the age of 11, I think. I did a switcharoo and used to require them for reading only, but then one day I realized I couldn't see very well and didn't really need them for reading anymore. Got my eyes checked, got glasses a couple of days later, and the world was so clear I just couldn't believe it.

9 years later, I'm wearing bifocals at the age of 20. Funny thing is, I didn't realize how badly I needed them until I got them, and it only took me about 3 days to get used to them although people told me it would probably take at least a couple of weeks.

My prescription has been steadily getting worse over the last couple of years but I think it will probably start changing for the better again soon.

I don't have terrible eyesight, but I do need glasses. I really like them as well. My prescription hasn't changed for a few years now, so I think I'm staying as I am now.

There's just one thing that you will not be able to stand. There's a point with each pair of glasses where the lenses will never be clean again (or so it seems). When that point comes, when you look into any light source, there will be huge light streaks across your vision just like in Battlefield 3. It's not enjoyable.

That's never happened to me and I've had glasses for 3 to 4 years at a time. The closest thing that happened was the outer layer (maybe a scratch resistant coating? Dunno) of glass started to deteriorate on one pair, but that actually started to look like scratches more than anything.

This happened to me swell, when I was 15 my mum booked me n eyetest deep down I knew I didn't have the best eyesight but was sort of in denial, whenthe lady asked if I ever had problems seeing the whiteboard I said only when I'm right at th back of the science labs(they are massive rooms at my school) when she dropped the first lens into the frame instantly it was clear all the way down til the second from last line. She put one in the other side and. Could then see the bottom line, peeked over the top and saw just how much difference it made I was astounded

This thread is inspiring me to go out and get some glasses! It would certainly be nice to be able to read street signs while driving

It's not that it makes your vision worse, your eyes just become more dependant upon the glasses. So you perceive your vision as worse because you're not as used to the blurred vision as you used to be.

Watch SD tv for awhile then go to HD. The up-convertion doesn't seem like that big of a jump. But watch HD for awhile and jump back down to SD and you might say "hey this looks way crappier than I remember".

Laser eye surgery is available for free to active military. I'm reserves but currently active status, so I'm gonna try and get it.

I hate Wolf...

I was born right next to CHenoble lol... well it occurred like 2 weeks after I was born so I am perplexed over the details of my nystagma...

but all I know is I have no issues with fast moving objects and things and events like speed scrolling fonts and reading signs at high speed on a motorway... just cant read them from a distance...

I have near and far vision but to be honest I havent a clue...

I am registrred partially sighted... feel happy saying that on this thread... therwise I would never mention it... its the most pointless register to be on it does not carry any benefits whatsoever...

hope you guys could share any relational benefits that you might know of... I am in need of new frames but my lenses are fine... but dont think I can get replacement frames as these are discontinued...

I wear tinted lenses... about 30% black... people confuse them for sunglasses... lol

I find them suitable for me as theyre not too dark but I can hide my nystagma which gives me more confidence to have eye to erm sunglasses contact conversations I am not shy just hate my eyes... otherwise I am very social and outgoing and great at new encounters... just hated clear lenses as they ZOOMED INTO MY EYEBALLS for people which only IDENTIFIED my nystagma from ten miles away so loving these tinted lenses... but dunno what to do next...

Lenses are not an option for me... contact lenses I mean...

another beauty for my register is it bans me from driving... SOB!

EDIT

@MrValentine - You were born close to the TIME of the Chernobyl incident, but aren't you from England? Yes, Chernobyl was a global disaster, but were you actually born in the Ukraine?

I only wear my glasses when i need them in school, that way when i dont wear them i notice no blur at all... I actually like my blurry vision sometimes; when things up close are clear and far away are blurry i personally think it's beautiful.

Thats exactly what I thought when i was at school. and i did the same for years, but i guess the problem is that my eyes got bad so gradually i lost any reference of what clear vision was.
now I've been wearing glasses for a week and cant stand my old vision any more. people are getting over the novelty and its all calming down. Its funny how everyone comments on sophistication and intelligence when they see you for the first time with specs.
I still haven't mastered drinking tea with them on. (any tips anyone?)
