Hello, I'm finally thinking of going to Uni, because I don't want to be stuck in my current job for the next 20+ years, it will drive me insane.

I was wondering if anyone could give some help, pointers, tips on writing your personal statement. What are the do's and do nots? Any help on this from people who have done one themselves and have gone to uni, would be great help, thanks.

It depends on what you're applying for. If it's an arts subject, then the writing style is probably fairly important. If it's a science subject then you just need to make sure it's clear and not full of spelling mistakes.
As for content, I suggest that you just write what comes naturally, what particularly interests you about the subject, why you want to study it, what you've done on your own, etc. and then go back through to make sure you've got all the important information in there.

It's generally much better to start with everything and then remove the bits you don't want than to try to write only the best bits to start with.

How is it too late to apply for 2012? There are over 6 months before September, so I can't see it being too late.

I'm going in for Games Technical Art. I just find I get stuck on structuring it all from start to finish. I also tend not to write lines upon lines of information like some people do, as most of the time its just back tracking on what you have already basically said, at least I some times find it that way.

Your applications generally have to be in before January the year before the course begins. ( If I've understood correctly )

I think it can depend, whilst our 6th form tried to push people before January, but I remember people doing their's later and still getting placements. School/6th form deadlines may not be the same as the final UCAS/University deadlines. I suspect it may even vary depending on University. I am talking 4 years ago though, so I don't know if things have changed.

Edit, there's also the January starter route if you don't make the deadline for any reason. My University used to have people start courses in January, though I don't think all courses offered it, I don't think my course offered it because all modules were double modules and it would have been impractical.

Checked and the course deadline was January 15th. I'll go insane if I have to do this dead end job much longer. I have emailed the university to ask to talk to the course tutors and see if I can get in that way, or ask if its worth sending my UCAS application off.

Do you already have the required qualifications, cus if you do you are more likely to get a place after the deadline than someone who is still at 6th form. Its worth phoning up the universities your interested in to see if they will consider you, prepare to explain why you want to do this course, why you want to go to their uni and think of a GOOD reason why you've left it so late.

If you dont get lucky you'll have to wait until after A Level results come out and apply to the places that other people reject/dont meet their offers
