There is a peculier log file that keeps appearing on my desktop. hs_err_pid3736.log
This is what it contains:

What is this mysterious file? I keep deleting it, but it keeps reappearing. Is it the sign of a virus? I did a scan to make sure, but it didn't turn up anything.

Interesting. However, I haven't done anything with Java, so why am I getting a Java error message?

From my understanding its a particular program thats uses Java thats the problem. What did you recently install? you might find the source there.
It seems that JVM is trying to write the log to the application path which is experiencing the error, if the application is on your desktop its dumping it there.
Looks like you can send it to the temp folder, where at least its not so in your face. I guess since its specific to whatevers using JVM you would have to find a fix for the program or maybe try updating.

Strong possibility its an online game you recently started playing.

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

It's not the log file itself that concerns me, it's the fact that I have no idea where it's coming from. I haven't installed or started playing anything new recently. That's what has me worried that it could be a virus.

Do you have any files/games/programs that you run by clicking it on the desktop? It'll be a file, not a shortcut, and it'll run in java. Is it minecraft?

I wouldn't worry about it being a virus at anyway, they don't leave log messages detailing what they've done.

@ Lord Herakles the Great

just delete them its just Java's way of trying to be irritating as flash though it sadly fails at that [scarcasm]

but yeah I use an online gallery server where one feature uses a java applet and often if my home network dies it crashes the upload and posts a log file on my desktop...

now imagine uploading several times... having desktop icons hidden [whats the point of them making your pretty desktop background looking ugly? ] and then suddenly showing desktop icons to find a million error log files EVERYWHERE!!!

I too was frazzled for a couple of seconds until I read that it was Java...

so maybe you too were using something that uses Java but maybe forgot that you clicked a java security box and now no longer get asked for permission... so maybe I dunno Flicr?
