Remember to make sure all your connections are good, otherwise your neutrinos might go faster than light.

Also, update to the article:
Quote: "UPDATE: Nature News has apparently received a statement from the Opera researchers. It indicates they have found two potential issues (one of them the optical cabling). The two issues would skew the results in opposite directions, which is why they will need new measurements to better understand whether both influence the results and, if so, what the net impact is. Thanks for the update! IIRC, I believe most of knew/speculated that there was something wrong with the experiment, analysis, and or interpretation of the data.

With all the possibilities we discussed, we may have given them too much credit. Even if unintentional. But, this is a CERN collaboration. I wouldn't have guessed that the error to be something so... ughhhh... "A loose cable???? Really?

(I know it's a little more involved than it sounds)

Is it fair to say that this is slightly embarrassing, or, is this just the way modern research plays out?

Was the announcement not only premature, but, irresponsible?

Not sure what to make of this, really.

It's the way all science plays out. This is why science is fluid and changing and we must always test and retest and question the results.

Are you talking about how the media responded? The media is for entertainment purposes only. If you want real science, read the reports and results yourself. If you're a student, your school almost certainly offers free access to scientific databases.

Scientific reports are simple to understand, you just have to take the time to read it. The underlying stuff may get too complicated unless you've been studying it for quite some time. But if you're an armchair scientist and want a rundown of what was done and what something means, read the first few paragraphs and wait for other researchers to test and verify

This comic is an accurate representation of how the media reports science:

It would only be embarrassing if they stated their findings as scientific fact. However, they, like all good scientists, retested and retested to find out if their results had any groundings.

The most reasonable conclusion is that there was no loose cable and this discovery did lead to time-travel, but this caused many problems and inter-dimensional wars which threatened the entire universe! So they sent someone back to loosen the cable and discredit the results so we would never discover time-travel.

But then they would be unable to send somebody back, causing a paradox in which the cable was never loosened, and we did discover time travel.
