The current gamer profile does not have permissions to play game sessions on xbox live..."?

When I try to play online in Smash Court Tennis 3 on the Xbox 360, it says something like, "the current gamer profile does not have permissions to play game sessions on xbox live......."
I looked it up online only to find nothing about this problem.
Please help ASAP! I have NO parental control stuff.

Does the account have Xbox Live gold? Or has the profile been banned from XBL?

It costs to play Xbox Live. Without paying for Gold membership you can NOT play live.
