EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1557-RX GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Looking to upgrade from my Radeon HD 4550 .

I was looking in the under $100 price range but decided to see what I could find that just barely broke the $100 barrier. At $110, this card suites fine.. I think.

What are your personal experiences with this card, if any?
I know it will be a massive jump from my current card, but do you think this card will hold me over for at least a year or two?

I mainly use FPSC, Ac3d, Fragmotion, PhotoShop, Sculptris. Current card runs them okay, lags a bit when I start getting into higher poly counts.

Just recently picked up the student editions of most of the AutoDesk software(s). Although I don't see myself using them heavily, mainly just tinkering around with and learning them.

I would really like to start tinkering with UDK, my current card will run it (Just barely) but it cries about it the whole time.

Unity can lag on me from time to time on the current card as well.

So considering I am moving from my Radeon HD 4550 to GTX 550, will I pretty much be blown away at the performance of it?

My first thoughts are that
a) The Radeon HD 4550 is a low profile card, so you may have a compact desktop, in which case you will have to check whether or not the GTX 550 will fit.
b) Check your PSU wattage. The Radeon HD 4550 claims to use 25w at most, whereas the GTX 550 states 116W.

Apart from that, the card would give you increased load times, and faster performance. How much? I can't tell.

Yes I think the performance will be significant.
Here's a comparison of the two cards: hwcompare.com

I bought this card. Kind of wished I'd paid that little bit extra and got the 560 TI just to future proof it a little more. Either way I went from a four year old laptop with built in graphics (one that lags playing Terraria) to a desktop that can run every new game, from BF3 to RAGE. So yeah, I was a little bit blown away.

JRH, no it is a full size tower. It is just a Frankenstein budget build I did a while back.

PSU is a run of the mill 550watt If I remember right.

Dar13, thank you for that link. From the looks of that, the GTX pretty much smashes what I have now and I am really not too un-satisfied with the 4550 , I just knew that with a few extra bucks spent I could get much better performance.

I don't render massive scenes or use crazy physics, so I think this GTX will be great for me.

Oolite, sounds like you were in a similar situation as me. So I think my thoughts will be the same once I get that thing seated in my computer.

Tnank you for your input guys.

I run my GTX550Ti with a decent Corsair 500w PSU. And it can handle pretty much anything.

Thank you everyone for your input.

It is in my budget for the 15th of this month, although the re-furbs are now out of stock and I am currently looking at 140 bucks.

Mods: you can lock this if you see fit. I don't want to clog up these boards.

Gotta keep the Ponies on the first page.
