like the title says. what do you guys thought about this video camera? i want to do small project movies like horror, drama, and etc. Is it reliable? is it hard to find dv tapes these days?

it's a really good camera. you can get different lens for it. it does pretty well in low light situation. i'd recommend getting it.

i have a cannon gl2 and i love it.

most stores sell mini DV tapes still or you can order them on line.

I literally just sold my XL1s on ebay last week. It's an awesome camera. The only weakness is it's not HD, so while you get excellent quality images which are better than any 'standard' camera you could buy today, you're never going to get the sharpness of modern cams. Also, the shoulder mount isn't the most ergonomic or comfortable, but it does the job.

I wouldn't go out and buy a professional camcorder if you have never filmed before, buy a cheap one for around £100 and use that to practice with and if you like doing films, get the one you want later, otherwise you might have just spent a few grand and realise you don't like it as a hobby.

i'm not big on the high def look. most people, including me use a film like effect on our footage to give it that "film look" therefore taking away that crystal clear look you get with high def camera's.

that's just my opinion.

but buy it if you have the money for it. looking foward to your first horror film

you can download some of my films if you want @

im thinking about getting one early next year with more money. i don't want to spend more than $5,000USD including everything. hope that's not too cheap. just small projects. lol btw how hard is it to maintain. heard from other Canon XL1/2 users that they had to have it repaired alot expensively.

Mine was second hand, and definitely not serviced since the guys eyebrow hairs were stuck in the view finder! I probably did less than 100 hours with it before I sold it, but I never serviced it either. I ran a head cleaner tape through it twice and that's all.

I'm sure it depends on how well you look after things. I'm the sort of person who always removes the battery and tape and puts the cam in it's box after every use, plus handle it gently while using it. I'm sure more enthusiastic users will end up breaking it eventually.
