Hello, We have been hard at work coding our next iphone/ipad game in AppGameKit for the past couple months. We would like your opinion on which icon we should use for the final game(option 1 or option 2). The text will of course be removed. The game thread can be found here

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=195022&b=48

and here are the two options for the icon

Option 1:

Option 2:

Option 1. I think the darker colors bring out the foreground more and it looks a bit more professional.

The first one looks good, but overall the icon is a bit unprofessional

I would ditch the shading on the character and if, yo uwant shading just use cell shading - goes better with the overall cartoony look

well, i think the second one is better

The result of origin.. Oh and ponies

You should size them according to how the icon will be viewed.

I find that it is hard to read. Not the text, but the image itself. Maybe put more focus on the basketballs and other sports goodies. They are hard to tell what they are at a lower res. I would try to size them up and push the guy up higher maybe. The tennis racket and baseball bat get completely lost in an 80x80 image.

But, to answer your question. I like the first one if they are small(seems less busy), but the second one if they are to remain 512 (the size spreads out the busyness of the colors in my opinion).

Commented on the other thread about the trailer

I actually liked the logo before I saw the game, but the blue background just doesn't fit in with the style of the game at all, as I didn't see a single bit of blue in the rest of the game, consider changing it to a similar style to the word bis of the trailer or even a wooden background

Consistency = increased professionalism

The second one is best. Change the font though. Perhaps even remove text altogether.

Cheers

I think it's too detailed, I mean imagine that shrunk down to the size of your thumb nail, you won't be able to pickup any of the details.

I'd suggest just the ninja and the main prop... like maybe have him standing in a ninja pose with footballs around him.

The second icon's backdrop looks better to me though.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We are currently working on a new icon that is less cluttered and easier to understand. The font will not be in the final icon

Also if you guys want to also give us feedback in the thread in the link in my first post about the actual game its appreciated

Once again Thanks!

Putting a copyright - even a legit copyright, let alone a fake one - looks extremely unprofessional and ugly on an app icon. There is a reason nobody does it, and id go so far as to say Apple might reject the app just because of it. Especially since Papple looks very similar to Apple.

Ignoring the text - which again, I strongly, strongly urge you to remove altogether - the icon is as others have said far too detailed. Stick to 3 colors, simple forms, no tiny details, and you'll be far better off.

Also get rid of the gradient fills and edge embosses you've done on every single shape, they too make things look very ugly. Gradient fills should be reserved for background elements, such as the main background colour itself, not the actual forms of the key foreground elements. Embosses should be kept to an absolute minimum and only used on very simple forms like the outline of a large logo, not drawings of characters or items.

^ On second reading of the thread, it seems the text there was just there temporarily so no one would steal the images.

Thanks for the feedback. As I said in the first post the text will be removed. It is there simple as Benjamin said so people will not take our icon images.

We are completely redesigning the logo so it is far less cluttered as well.

Well originally we were going to go with one of the above icons. However due to all the great feedback we got here and on other forums we are recreating the icon. So thanks again for the feedback

@SenorValentine: That's the same expression I'd have on my face if I fired a rocket out of a launcher and it just started hovering right next to my face...

I think it's better. As mentioned before by RUCCUS, get rid of the edge embosses.. If you notice in this picture:

(which I suggest you focus on more than a 512x512 picture
Quote: "You should size them according to how the icon will be viewed."
)
All that detail is lost. The only crit I have is that the bottom of the ninja is somewhat lost in the gradient of the background(maybe have a basketball in the background?). But I would say that it's much easier to read.

I think the biggest issue here is you're using the art from your actual app for the icon (which makes sense) however the art from your game is where the problem lays, it is very mediocre at best.

Id suggest finding someone that knows their way around an art package to re-design all of the game art for you, and then work off of that for the app icon. There is a difference between going for a cartoonish style and just not knowing how to draw, and Im afraid going off of the design for the ninja and weapons you're leaning towards the latter.

I preferred the rocket launcher in front of his face like in the first icon. Keep the closeness of this last one but move the launcher around like the first one. At the minute looks kind of wrong a little bit.

Cheers
