If you want to work and live in the States or Britain its not as easy as you might expect.
Immigration is a major issue in both these countries with the system being abused on a major scale. Unless your coming from one of the countries they accept as oppressive and offer sanctuary from, such as Somalia, you wont just walk right in
You will have to prove you already have a job to start with and companies in these countries generally have to hire talent they can say cant be found at home, in that case the company would apply for your visa for you.
Even if you do apply for a visa, possibly starting with a six month period, you will have to prove you can support yourself for that period of time as they are very unlikely to grant you a work permit right off, once in the country you can apply for permanent residency during which period you are assessed on your ability to earn a living and support yourself and they will do very thorough background checks on you via FBI records etc, its a very long process which can take up to a year.
Even once you are accepted and granted permanency and a work permit it will be another two years before you can apply for citizenship it would take around 3-4 years in total.
Not trying to put you off but if you are a CEO for a company that develops games which can be sold online they will likely tell you you dont need to be living in these countries to do it.
Britain is slightly different in being part of the European Union where any memeber countries can hire anyone from the member states and citizens can move freely between countries, I could for instance go and live and work in Germany or even after three months resident there could claim benefits, just an example of different immigration laws to the States before anyone jumps in saying "I got half a dozen Polish guys working beside me who appeared out of nowhere", your from China so its not gonna be easy.
It would be easier if you had a relative you could apply through who is already resident in these countries, but the process is the same.

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

If you're already doing work as a games developer it might be worth checking out games companies over in the US (or UK) and see if they're interested in giving you a placement.

Obviously, you'll have to get a Visa, but Rolfy already covered that.

Realistically though, if you're a self employed mobile developer, you're not going to be very desirable. For the small number of companies that are both mobile app developers AND large enough to be interested in recruiting overseas talent, jobs must be fiercely competitive. I would only imagine large console/PC software houses would consider recruiting overseas staff, and again ... fiercely competitive.

Your best bet would be to join a large software company like IBM. They often recruit overseas staff, but guess what?!? ... fiercely competitive. When I joined IBM, there were 450 applicants, 60 invited to a 2 day selection process, and only 2 of us were hired. About 10 of those people were foreign and had paid their own way over here, just to get turned down.

The good thing about large multinationals is they have offices all over the world, so you could possibly get a job in China and then get transferred to the UK or US. I worked with a guy who got transferred to Canada after 2 years with IBM. But again, it's a long slog and requires you to get yourself into a desirable position before you can move abroad.

There are most likely other options and possibilities, but that's the area I know about.

You're called Simon and used to work for IBM...but you're not my uncle. (My uncle Simon also used to work for IBM...if that wasn't clear )

But yes, you're quite right. Definitely worth looking around to see what you can get in China and what that may lead to.

I know, If the two of us were related I think we would have to do the honourable thing and not spread our genes in case an abomination is born. Heck I might just refrain from spreading mine anyway, you know just in case.

That would be my advise too as easiest method for him. Plus totally work like no tomorrow once in and bend over backwards to help the company and keep popping up when placement abroad is mentioned.

This is how I ended up in Dubai for 3 months, and a friend of mine for several years. There was also a few others in the US, Hong Kong, and Australia. Basically a total willingness to give up your life for a while helped or being stubborn and insisting you are the man for the job (someone said they would quit unless offered the Australian post and it worked).

One guy bought a house outright in the UK after being in Dubai for 5 years, and another became a US citizen after he moved to a US company after several years. The guy in Australia got engaged to someone who was in Home and Away last time I heard (finished at 3pm every day and the boss there took them to a bar for drinks next door which was right next to the beach).

Cheers

Hmmm. I now have the beard, so I'm thinking a cave maybe in my future at some point... And a robe...

Cheers

PS. Plus some dangerous tasks to prove your worthiness of course. Unless you are a bird, in which case there is some sort of water source I would imagine.

PPS. All my knowledge basically comes from "The Golden Child". Giggedy...
