I just reviewed this title on my blog thing. I won't copy in the review this time as I use some foul language.

You probably never heard of this game before but if you did, what did you think of it?

A lot of you older folks around certainly played these games back in the golden age of point and click adventures. I personally think that the Point and click premise doesn't hold up to modern games and gamers anymore, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that some games are still made in this style. I collect rare and indie videogames so I've gotten this from the bargain bin to put it on my shelve but found myself very intrigued by its surreal artdesign and soundscale.
Whats your input on this? Are point and click adventures still a thing or not?

I still like to play Beneath A Steel Sky every now and then, I even dig out the old LucasArts point & clickers occasionally. But it's more a nostalgia thing for me.

I think, generally, gamers today prefer their games to be more 'immediate', in other words, quick fixes of fast paced action.

I agree. Thats the biggest issue for me aswell. I do love slower paced story driven games, but walking around free and exploring is mandatory to me.

Even in action games I like to explore every nook and cranny, especially games Like Half-Life, where the story is in the details. I also enjoyed FarCry, where I spent ages exploring those gorgeous outdoor levels!

I do this even more these days because of developing my own game. I like to appreciate the hard work developers put into making their games.

I mean, when you rush through a game, getting caught up in the combat, you miss all the details that someone has slavishly put into the level. It always seems like such a waste...

saw this before on amazon, loved the video but never buyed.

i am still playing BLADERUNNER from time to time (runs again on win7, yippie!^^), of wich also "pro-gamers" say one of the best games ever made (its nearly 15 years old).

i like the point and click-genre, but time has gone by and as you said, awesome complex story and slow pace in combination with hard puzzles is not what actual gamer-generation is up to.

for most gamers it has to be easy to understand, fast and blingbling, nothing more. not that practicable in a point & click
.

i was NEVER a fan of point and clicks - i dont get any immersion from that, as i usually play games for the immersion and the experience of a whole new world. Amnesia had pussling and stuff, and that was fine - it intervined nicely with the whole scary game part...

I dont like point and clicks - i just... find it booring and slow paced

Point & Click adventures are still my favourite genre of games. Broken Sword 1 & 2 are probably still my favourites.

I recently found my old copy and have been thinking about installing it again. It's been so long since I played but I remember loving every minute of it.

I liked Gobliiins, that had a real sense of humour to it, and the puzzles were fairly difficult, but the main thing I liked about it was how clear it was. Compared to say, that Indi Jones point and click game, where it was just too vague for me - I prefer games that are quite clear on what you have to do, then make it a challenge to actually do it.

There are a few recent classics, like Machinarium, which is probably doing quite well on the iPad, that's where I think the market is. For one thing, it's tough to justify spending real money on a point and click game, something you'll play through once and never look at again (save for nostalgia). Paying a couple of bucks for a game like that is fair enough I think.

Now the bit that might land me in trouble...
I never liked Monkey Island. I thought it was over rated drivel, I never tried the sequel. Also, as much as I liked the visuals and atmosphere in Steel Sky, that game just annoyed me.
Personally, I found 'How to be a complete barsteward' on the ZX Spectrum to be about the funniest and most interesting adventure I've played. That game was so 80's, clunky and ugly, but lots of charm. I like the Skool Daze games on the Speccy as well. Not strictly point n click games, more involved, but very effective and very challenging. I have more nostalgia for action adventure games than any point and click shenanigans.

I used to like that one, though as a little kid I found it pretty impossible.

I loved Discworld 1&2, but never got a hold of Discworld Noir - the one time I did see it I didn't have the money spare . The humour in them was especially awesome and you got a good few hours out of them.

As for the Monkey Island series, I loved them, though MI2 was probably my favourite. I own the remakes on my 360 and iPod. LOOM was also another point & click from those guys and you can buy it from Steam, so totally worth an impulse buy. I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it.

I loved the Broken Sword series, though I only actually played the first 2, sadly I don't know where my discs are for them, I have a box of all my old games but they kind of got moved when I went to Uni and I don't know what happened to them The collection includes some of the Myst series and they were simply jaw dropping in terms of visuals. However, I have a copy of The Longest Journey sat on my shelf, this thread may just have me tempted to install it again.

Damn I was trying to make my own point & click like adventure ages back, Shadow Behind the Leaves, I think I'll have to revive that at some point.

And because I loved the movie, Hook, is worth a mention. It was only a short game, but an enjoyable one to say the least.

Anyway, back on topic, I've never played Outcry but it sounds pretty interesting.

I've recently become a fan of point-and-click games after playing Beneath A Steel Sky and Realms Of The Haunting, the latter of which is more of a mixture of P&C and FPS.

One thing I personally can't stand in a P&C adventure is when the clues and use of objects makes no sense, and requires guessing and/or experimenting on the part of the player. I watched a Let's Play of Discworld a while ago and many of the objects you wouldn't know how to use since they all seem to be just randomly thrown in.

this thread

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

Nostalgia 3.0

Yeah P&C are special cases, I have all the Broken Swords on Steam and TLJ and Dreamfall special edition so TLJ on one disk oooo yeah... but above all my most enjoyed P&C is Broken Sword 2 but interesting enough Secret Files was an amazing series you must try them... specially Tunguska and SF2...

but nope never played this game the art cover puts me off interest... not to say I am not aware of the title though... which says a lot about their marketing and product placement abilities...

hang on a sec this game is from 2009... lol was just curious to see what happened to a major retailer here in the UK and surprise surprise they are still stocking Outcry, however they are in administration I hope Game shuts for good... but then where will non online gamers buy there stuff from now? I can not think of any retail PC distributors... this is certainly iffy news...

Anyway, I still think there is plenty of life left in P&C games... no reason for it to die down..

I think we already had this discussion ut yay haha

thinking about it, those games where you have to find objects count for P&C too... and they are on the rise at the moment

I like Game, it usually has what I want in there and for a fair enough price. Plus I have £60 in store credit, so I hope they don't shut completely. They sold me the collector's edition of Star Wars: The Old Republic for £50 (RRP £130), so I was pretty chuffed - it wouldn't be worth the £130, but definitely worth the extra £15 on top of the Standard Edition price. The Game in our town is usually busy so they've not shut that one and from what I hear they've been taken over. If Game shuts, where am I going to loiter when I have to wait around in town? A card shop? Starbucks? The 99p Store? No way man, can't do it. The alternative for my game browsing/physical purchases would be Tescos and their staff are useless and I don't want to support them trying to monopolise every retail market out there. Plus they couldn't price up a second hand game if their life depended on it.

I think next time I pop into Game I might browse around and see if they've stocked this.

Gobliins yeah! I forgot about that game. That is my favourite point and click game. I completed it. I completed one of the other Goblins games as well.
