Quote: "Dreamhost has gone down the pan recently. They are not as good as they used to be. Connections are always very slow and services are often down.
I would advise away from them, used to be good, but now they aren't."
I agree they haven't been 100% reliable, maybe less so than self-managed servers or other smaller services. But its just a trade-off imo. Then again, I don't host anything financially sensitive with them.
Quote: "There's no such thing as unlimited. If they offer unlimited, I'd stay away.
If you need massive requirements (whole computer(s) all to yourself), you might be best off purchasing and hosting your own hardware. Look up the term "colocation"."
The price to use an "unlimited" host is considerably less in terms of hardware and management than to co-locate something. Especially with the current price in drives. Should a drive fail (even with raid) it'll cost you a pretty penny. Not something I suggest for the inexperienced.
You'll also notice my Unlimited being wrapped in quotes. You're right about that. No such thing as unlimited. As soon as you use more than your "fair share" they'll cut you off. Which can suck I guess..
I don't have any issues with dream host, then again I don't host anything of vital importance.
