Greetings all!
To "celebrate" my forthcoming return into the world of game Dev, I have decided to build myself a new rig, as my old 'Coz-enator" was getting a bit old. I shall be constructing the components over the next few months, and come September, I shall be unveiling the creation. However, I would like the community to have a say on what components should be used, as it would be nice to show off the rig in the end, knowing that this community had an influence on what goes into it.
So join me, in creating perhaps one of the nicest, most beefy PC's on this forum.

This is what I have in mind so far:
CPU: Intel i7 3930k Hex core (with six hyperthreads, making this a 12 core processor)

GPU: 7970 3GB/Nvidia 690 (Perhaps in Crossfire/SLI?)

MOTHERBOARD: Asus P9X79 Pro Intel X79 Chipset

RAM: 16GB 1600mhz Corsair XMS3

PSU: Corsair 1050W

Cooling: XSPC X2O pump, Black Ice GTS 320 Radiator & RASA CPU Block

HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F1 500GB

SSD: 120GB OCZ Force 3 SSD

If you have any comments, suggests or just want to add your opinion on this machine, feel free .

CoZ

CPU : PHENOM X6 1090T BE @ 4.1GHZ| MOBO: CROSSHAIR IV FORMULA|
RAM: 16GB CORSAIR XMS3 DDR3 | GPU:2 x XFX 6970 2GB CROSSFIRE| 250 GB SSD| PSU:XFX 650W BLACK EDITION |CASE: NZXT PHANTOM

That's your idea of getting a bit old?

That build you have listed definitely looks like a dream machine, I'd go for the AMD gpu because I prefer them for some reason, and you definitely want SLI or Crossfire just for the extra awesome factor, if you've got the money to blow. xD

try to get an asus maximus v gene. I have great difficulty getting one in australia. it seems like the best mother board on the market at this time.

for a graphics card nvidia + whatever you can spend.
They go up to about 6 gig of video ram. nice! I want a super video card because a game i build now will need to be released in the future. need super hard ware now to see the future says I. all the rest seems nice. come tax time i will be SLI doubling.

main points are motherboard, cpu,(I already have an i7 2600 processor) ram and video card ram. spend wisely.
I have to wait to get the Maximus main board in Australia. after that i am going for Video card performance(mainly ram size).

im doing the whole bank saving plus tax time bonus for my dream rig, maximus motherboard plus nvidia graphics+best on the market.

see you there

For the GPU I'd definitely steer towards two GTX 690's in SLI. AMD cards are nice, but they lack a few drivers here and there.

not too bad, but all I can say right now is... 4 months time... a lot will have come out... also aim for 1800+ memory 1600 is between 1333-1800 so why pick lower

MSI actually have some amazing boards but the ASUS Maximus is not bad...

and if you really want beefy, go for the 2011 socket Intels...

steer clear of AMD/ATI specially if you want to do PHYSX coding...

but yeah keeping my eyes on this one

Physx runs on AMD cards, just without the hardware acceleration. IMO, if you are going to code using physx, you should use an AMD card, because 50% of your gamerbase will be using AMD cards and not have that hardware acceleration.

If it runs well on AMD, it'll run well on all cards. xD

I don't want to turn this thread into an AMD - NVIDIA war lol but long story short the last ATI chip that was of any good to me was the RAGEPRO128... [I believe that was the name...] and that was a good chip!

though I am an NVidia fan for more reasons than 1 though at the core its because the beloved 3DFX was swallowed up into NVidia.

if you do not know what 3DFX was then... Google time

A 3930k is a 2011 socket, the only higher CPU in the Sandy Bridg-E range is the 3930X which is £200 more for a .1ghz speed increse and a slightly large cache.

Exactly, which is why I will probably go for the 7990 when it is released. The Ivy Bridge Enthusiast line has been pushed back until halfway through 2013. Besides, I doubt a 6 core (12 core with Hyperthreading enabled) would be out of date for a while to come.

In terms of memory, I have never seen the point in going higher than 1600mhz, as the speed increase is minimal, and does not justify the price jump. However, I suppose in this instance, budget doesn't really matter does it.....

One aspect I'm stuck on is if I should watercool my GPU(s). I have worked out its about £100 extra per GPU to watercool it, as I will need to buy full GPU blocks etc. I can't decide if its worth it.

In the event I go for the 7990, I won't be buying two, as the card is already two 7970's put into one.

I loved my 8 MB Voodoo2!

I also suggest an Nvidia GFX card. Both are great, but I had an issue with an ATI card at one point, and I've never had an issue with my Nvidia cards.

Yep that was the last time I went totally cutting edge. I used to have all the latest stuff (day job programmers tend to collect PCs) until the last 3DFX card. Can't remember what it was (possibly Voodoo3), but was the absolute best card money could buy at the time. Was like about £350 and really nothing touched it. Then my mate bought the first GeForce and it was something like twice as fast for less money.

Never again did I go bleeding edge. Saying that, it's hard to shake the programmer ways so I still have i7 and like about 5 monitors to work on from home, and the like, just everything is in a more budgety way these days Can't really excuse it considering I play no PC games anymore and pretty much limit things to handhelds.

Trust me though there is nothing quite like putting a sledge hammer through some old PCs Made me almost cry (esp for my old Zip drives ), but Mwahahaha! Hopefully my next batch of PCs for the hammer I get right because one of them has 2 RAID0 15kRPM Raptors in them. And I want to keep them...

Cheers

the best I had was the VooDoo 2 I have a VD3 sitting around and once had a VD4 4500 [Man if someone knows the name of that racing game at the time rally game it was the best I ever played can not remember what it was called...]
but yeah the VooDoo2 was the best I ever had too... coupled with an intel Celeron 433... can not remember what the internal VPU was called anyway the best ever indeed!

best games ever played on it, Silver, Thief 2 [demo] and SW EPI Racer.

Everything on your list seems fine but definately go for a Nvidia card (just rember the Shader Model 3.0 problem with ATI cards). Theres so much stuff I could say about Geforce GPU's superiority (from personal experience) but I will save it ATM.

CoZ is going for the latest technology; latest ATI cards have full Shader Model 3.0 support (no bugs), which isn't the best thing, they even introduced new advancements in shader threading (SH3.0).

@CoZ: I personally think you should look at some statistics to build your 'beast', because people often put their opinions first based on what they have, although it's fun to hear them, it often doesn't match the facts.

If that ain't the truth. I once heard a good one about how an AMD 6 core cpu is actually 4 core with 2 virtualized (not true). I dunno how people come up with this stuff.

@ Jerico2day

Oh man you made my day

[but yeah I meant feedback not data on an already defined product lol]

hehe, man I miss the late 90's the funny things I heard like a hard drive being made of rocks so thats why its called a hard drive XD

Heh, well I thought of it because a guy in my computer class was showing off his rig, and I asked him why he chose a 4 core amd instead of a 6 core one. I was curious because the 6 core is barely more expensive, and he spent quite a bit on everything else.

lol

do did you do the blank face trick and let him continue to be benign or crack out loud and then tell him how wrong he was?

I like just keeping quiet [blank face trick] and having a good giggle later lol

I just smiled and nodded Double-checked all the amd architectures to make sure I didn't miss anything there, and came up with the conclusion that this is why people shouldn't trust "computer wizzes"

Javascript scares my web design teacher, and PHP is a foreign language spoken by savages. She doesn't even know how to setup WordPress.
