I already have Camstudio for recording, but none of the codecs I have are any good for recording games, or even simple desktop recording. They have very slow compression rates, so I was wondering if any of you knew of any good FREE codecs or software that could record games and things at an efficient rate.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Yes, I have Googled it.

Fraps is the best recording software ever created but it uses a locked codec so its codec wont work with Camstudio, only for playing back fraps footage.

The second best codec EVER created IMHO is PICVideo MJPEG. I used it all the time when I was interested in "Lets Playing".

If you google deep enough you can still find a legal free version, otherwise you must pay $28.

It's superfast and allows realtime desktop recording at 30 fps.

but remember the actual\final recording speed depends on your CPU and harddrive combination.

ALSO note, fraps contains a special audio recording system to prevent desync. No other recording system on the market contains such a feature (mine does but its been mothballed for now lol).

recording gameplay with anything otherthan fraps will always leed to audio \ video desync on windows systems over long periods.

Thanks for the responses guys!
Yeah I've heard of FRAPS before, though, I can't afford it, I'm broke. But I'll try WLGFx's recording software. It seems like it would be fast. Camstudio only captures at like 10 FPS on a good codec! Which is pretty pathetic.

EDIT: WLGFx's won't even record... I select a program for it to record, make a placeholder file for it, and press start. I assume that's what you have to do, right?

I use something called taksi. It's on sourceforge.

It started out working perfectly, but I can't get it to work anymore. Maybe you'll have better luck, but it's fast and free.

It's not a free codec, I have Virtual Dub already though.

I gotta say, I use virtualdub for recording. Its basic but I've been using it for years and its comfy. If you are looking for CODECS, the most comprehensive set is Combined Community Codec Pack. While some are decode-only, most of the codecs are usable for encoding. Look up CCCP, it's really a good codec pack and I'm sure you'll find something to your specs.

I haven't got back to getting the real time recording working on mine yet. It works and I've used it to record quite a few things but it's just not that good yet.

I'll get back to it in due time...

The fastest codec I've found so far, although it's not the best quality, is the Microsoft Video 1. You get a reasonable speed out of it compared to how slow DivX and other compressor codecs are. And at the expense of quality. Worth a try just to see what you think of the codec.

Downloading that now. Thanks for telling me about it!
@WLGFx
Microsoft Video 1 is pretty slow for me...

I have a quad core processor and an AMD 6750 HD GPU, if that helps.
