So hang on... Are you saying the updater blocks an app from executing?

I personally know a handful of non internet based gamers too... Never assume anything... Chances are you will be wrong...

maybe i didnt explained my self clear. but this Updater designed best for MMORPG games.
any game developer can use it. but it requires some basic pc features. one of them is a full access to the internet.
since its mmo game, it must be an online game. so dont try to proof me anything else >_<

But I sympathise with you, I am pretty bad at remembering core facts about my own projects haha sometimes I do speeches and forget the most important bits of information hahaha

So you had MMO games in mind, kind of like the WoW updater I see... well I have an RPG game in mind which HAS internet related functions but I designed it so that it was not mandatory... so again this becomes invalidated for my uses...

But again I wish you every success with this you are a very focussed developer!!! and your skillset is clearly above mine at this stage... I envy you for having made this!

Chances are if someone actually made a real MMORPG (of which I haven't seen here), then they would be skilled enough to make their own updater.

You should rework your security settings and find a way to make it work for all types of games. Limiting it to MMORPGs is immediately shooting yourself in the foot. Also, even Steam doesn't always require you to be on the Internet to run the games. If they have a way of doing it, so should you.

it doesnt really limiting the programmer do only mmo games. you always can use any kind of game as long as u use internet connection for updates.

Is there any way you could make it so when you run the updater you can make it run what files you have if you are not connected to the Internet. That would let you play games offline if you ran them once with an Internet connection. Maybe an option in the updater?

the only reason i did it to be online, its that you will play only the updated version of the game everytime you run.
so if its an online game, everyone will have the latest version of the engine.
but i guess i could try to add an option for offline users.

@littleGg6: here is an idea for you.
Launcher is basicly creates another exe that runs the game.
how about in your game folder make 2 names for your exe's
the launcher's exe will be named "Online Game.exe"
and your own exe will be named "Offline Game.exe"
that way you can run the game using both methods.

I can't test it out right now as I'm away but in a week I'll register, test it and hopefully there will be no problems my end!
The reason I would like offline mode is because for games that don't nesseserily need updating (so no multiplayer) people can run it in a older version or if online run the better version.
This project is looking great and the offline option will be helpfull but is there a way to incorporate offline mode into the exe so it's only one file. This may seem weird but if you make it so the online one is launched and then if it can't connect then run the offline one with a message saying that it couldnt connect. Just an idea but loving the project and I can see this being BIG!

question for ya.....but off topic sorry...lol!

You had mentioned the use of tcp/ip as slow....

What would you recomend using? Also i have started to limit my comunication so its not every sync.....but it looks like i take a tad of a performance hit when it comes to a connection out of the city. Do you have any ideas of whats best to use?

Also....im now interested in your project during development. I have my editor now able to host as a server while others connect and draw the game together....now. when i update the editor id like it to do a quick search to see whats been added or updated and update them.

Your software ...how does it work?

edit:....humm how about registered users?
can your software handle a registry check to see if the user is valid as well before launching the game?

eg. i could control the master list and the game checks to see if a user is on that list to be able to play...

if not this would be a cool add on. And im a paying customer.....let me know if your up to adding that but would need some form of security

if you looking for a best protocol for your need, tell me what exactly you want to do?
it could be TCP/IP protocol, and if you want something faster wich is UDP protocol. but every protocol has his own limits. tell me exactly what stuff you want to do with it.
my app works under FTP and HTTP protocols.

you mean get into a registry of someone? i dont think its a good idea to mess with registry of other persons.

erm. lemme try to explain it clearly.
as an a game developer (which is you); you creating an empty folder, inside that folder, you puting all the media files of your game that you wish to be "synced". all you do, is creating an account on my AdvUpdater app, following the steps on the "Wizard" mode either following the Youtube video i uploaded earlier.
the main result is all files that in that folder are uploaded to the main server. you creating a launcher out of the AdvUpdater, and you sending to everyone else (you dont have to create it over and over again, cuz the launcher only knows your account name, so he could connect to the same server and download all the files that been uploaded by you.)
And basicly thats all.
to apply new updates, you have to either replace or add new files to that project folder of yours. all the files will be uploaded automaticly, and all users will have your latest game files as soon as they run the Launcher you created.
also one more feature, if you wish that you dont want ppl to have your project files, you always can remove them from your local project folder. noone will be able to run your game/app again.

hopefully i explained my self clear enough. i assure you its safe and easy to use. even though i made it sound very complicated.

yes you can control exactly what files u want to be updated and what not.

just try the app with your self. see how it all works.
to learn how the app works, will need not more than 5 minutes.

Nope you didnt understand...lol...

let me retype it better...

I want to setup an online registry. This data base will contain all the registered user ids and i say id's only...no payment info or anything like that.

When my software launches it needs to check the online data base to verify the user id is valid before launching the game.

Id very much be interested in such a thing but i may hafta code it my self to use a sql data base.

The tcp/ip....if you remember correctly i had done a demo of 2 pokemon running around as you pointed out that it would be choppy at a greater distance using tcp protocol....if it wasnt you then someone else told me that...lol

about your database/sql. if i will add a feature of that, there will be always an update that i need to implent.. noone will be happy in current state of whatever i will do.
so i suggest to make those stuff inside your application it self. that way you always control of all the registrations and accounts of your personal software.

and about your small protocol issue, tell me more details what exactly you want to do. then i will pick you the right protocol to use.

i think i know what is the problem. lemme just ask you some stuff before making sure.

- when you closing the updater and then executing the updater again, does it continues and does the same problem on same file?
- what file size does it happens on?

I've just tried to login again, it logged in this time but gets the error: Error Updating Registration!(Num:5) - "Supa-Triz" when the file tries to upload

You mean the AdvUpdater Setup right? If so when i logged in again it started uploading the same file

It happens on a 108 KB .wav file

Is it worth mentioning that i have an incredibly slow upload rate?

Edit: Didn't see the update, will try that now!

Edit2: I get "Bad Account. contact support!" whilst trying to login

yeah i also made small debug mode that sents some data to me so i can watch whats going on as a beta testings..

i saw it works fine.. but to make sure, once your files been all updated, please close AdvUpdater, and login again. see if there will be any other files that needs to be uploaded. please report me if so.

also i noticed you uploading the whole game including the game source code.
if thats what you planning, then its all good.
but if not, u better make a folder of those files you want to be uploaded that doesnt includes the source files. create launcher in other empty folder, and check how it works before posting.

I just tested Melancholic's Launcher.exe he sent me and here's what happens:

First run: It sticks at 100%
Second run: It sticks at "Getting Data"

It randomly sticks at "Getting Data", not all the time, but it happens a lot.

after i tested few stuff with some friends, i made new updates for you guys:

ChangeLog:
0.7 Beta:
AdvUpdater:
- Added stability for low connection users
- Added automatic reconnect on connection drop
- Changed MB to MiB
- Added Clr Removed button. (it will clear the removed files record in AdvUpdater)
- Added Error check for generating launcher.exe into dropbox folder.

- no more progress bar bugs all works smooth
- no more percentage bugs. now it shows the correct percentage of how much progress been done.

ok, thanks for 1 more person who participated with some tests on the advupdater, i finally fixed all the low connection bugs, so now if you get disconnected from server, you will be back automaticly.
and i also added an account protection - so lets say you terminated AdvUpdater in a middle of account writing, and it could hurt your account data.
NO WORRIES! your account will be fully restored next time you run out of the backup account.

so here are the version 0.8 change log:

AdvUpdater 0.8:
- Fixed Info box problem
- Fixed some minor Issues with account disconnecting.
- Fixed the issue with updating Read-Only files.
- Added backup account, In case you terminate the AdvUpdater in a middle of writing to account wich can ruin your main account. so if the program finds that the account is illegal or not working, it will read the data from backup account.
- Added Banner Setup! Create your own banners of your games
- Added Own Website execute when clicking on Banner
- Changed the Order of Account Storage List, the Free Users comes First!

Launcher 0.8:
- Fixed ZERO Speed issue
- Fixed Issue with empty file downloading.

You should make it easy for only certain people to have access to the download. Meaning people that bought the game.

Have a login with username and password. Store all the accounts on a server encrypted by the program.

The user runs the launcher and a login shows up. If the credentials are correct then it will download.

Built into the Adv Updater will be a create account option that the creator of the game can have access to. The creator will add accounts of people that bought the game. The creator will also specify a password for that user. The creator would send an email after the person bought the game with their username/password to have access to downloading the game.

To be smart the creator should make the username close to the email address of the person who purchased that game.

If that feature was added I'm sure TGC staff would be all over the utility as it could be used to sell TGC games too!

@TheMeq: i did some tests with file removing and creating again on AdvUpdater, and everything seems to work fine.
please tell me your problem in more details.

also that kind of problem might cause if you trying to create the launcher inside your defined Dropbox folder. if so, create the launcher in different folder. it will fix that.

OK, its with the AdvUpdater

It just always says Removing: IconBlue_1.png and sticks like that.

It says Used: 3.9MiB Out of 500MiB, eventually that goes down to 0 Out of 500MiB but after closing and reopening (to check) it goes back up to 3.9MiB.

EDIT: Ok now it's not shifting from 3.9MiB

try this AdvUpdater.exe file i attached to you, replace it with the existed one.

see if shoud fix that problem you heaving. if so, let me know. so it will help me to point the problem to the right direction..

also try to press on Clr Removed button on AdvUpdater. see if ether can help.

ok i fixed the problem within your account.
should work now when you log in

AdvUpdater keeps track on your removed file list from dropbox folder too. so it will be applied on the launcher side too. (if you remove file from local dropbox, the file will be removed on the other computer game folder too)

Ok I've attached a screenshot. The AdvUpdater has been open for about 10 minutes.

I ran the filecheck.exe (Launcher) after about 10 minutes.

The screenshot explains what I see.

The test folder was created on my desktop and isn't linked to dropbox in anyway. I get the same results running the launcher from my other laptop too.

It only downloads the files that you have on your server so the exe doesn't run due to some missing files.

how come it still removes the IconBlue_1.png? i already removed it from your account manualy? did u do anything again with your account in order to craete that bug again?

Clr Removed & Apply buttons wont work unless it finish doing the current task, and since the current task is removing same file, then nothing will be changed thats why it wont save any paramters.

i will remove all of your account in order to create you a beta test account, wich you recive 2GB storage on it. This account will give me more debug options. just register again, and select under the Storage Limit the "Unlimited Beta"

this will create you whole new account.

i also fixed some issues with banner options. try the new AdvUpdater on the attachment.

@all
i know my AdvUpdater isnt perfect yet, thats why it in section of "Work In Progress"
i've recived some reports about some Unicode problems that says AdvUpdater cannot upload files/folder that aint english.
so in last few days i've been working very hard on this issue and i got everything working now. as well i had some bugs with banner, and i fixed that too
now im working on the "Minimize to Tray" option as soon as i finish that one, the AdvUpdater+Launcher will be ready for you.

after i will recive some reports about how the latest version of AdvUpdater works, i will be ready to release it globally!
so wish me luck!
and thanks again for helping me to improve AdvUpdater.
since there were some top people who helped me to improve AdvUpdater by reporting bugs and suggesting ideas, i will be giving them a pretty good account deal for FREE.

just wanted to inform all the users of my AdvUpdater;
im working now on new update and you might notice some changes in your own accounts..
but nothing to worry about for now.

althought once i release the new update, i will have to remove all the existing accounts (sorry)
but no worrys, as long you backup your media, everything will be just fine.

ok guys, 1 step before releasing the AdvUpdater!
i just finished up a huge update:

22.10.12 Update:

AdvUpdater 0.9:
- Fixed Banner Saving Trouble, sometimes not worked properly.
- Fixed Banner Edit button
- Fixed freezing when removing files while uploading them.
- Fixed File/Folder uploading problem - wasnt worked in Unicode formats
- Added more storage packages for free and payable accounts (BASIC, Suited, HD, Max)
- Added Upgrade account button for more options and better storage.
- Removed Minimize to tray option.
- Changed MiB to MB in some places

Launcher 0.9:
- Fixed Large Banner Sizes that bigger than screen size. (launcher goes up suddenly)
- Fixed Unicode Folder/File updating
- Added Firewall check, just in case you getting disconnected from download by your own firewall, you will get small popup of possible solutions for the situation.
- Launcher is now follows the account package details; maximum files to download in same time and banner on/off

@TheMeq: i checked step by step all the possible bugs that could happen to you in this update and fixed them all.

This is exactly what I needed for my game, but I need to host the files.

A shame you didn't open this to give us the option to host ourselves. Adding a "Connect Address/Port" in the tool would be amazing. I would pay big bucks for that.

@Qqite: i recived lots of requests on that, but thing is that the main purpose i made the AdvUpdater is for mmorpg games, wich means so if u already hosting your game server and files for AdvUpdater on same PC, it might slow down the game server.. so the way it works now its the best way for now..

althought i was thinking of adding a support for custom servers, but it wont be free and with some other limites. e.g only up to 5 accounts

but why you need to host files on your own computer anyways?
lets say you are hosting the files; consider if someone who trying to run the launcher and download your game files from other side of the planet, the connection will be slow and he might even could not be able to download the game files..

Its just the ability to be 100% control of the data and flow.

I am soon wanting to take my game to the commercial frontier and any businessman would know to keep the thirdparty reliance to a minimum. A partial-example is how just a few posts back you are having to reset the profiles.

If you are willing to develop a deployable server I am more than willing to purchase it up front.

Also, I would not be hosting on the same computer as I am developing/hosting the game, I would be having a whole slew servers all having their own job.

You've created a wonderful people of software that I was dreading making myself. Besides, why invent the wheel when someone else has invented the car.

the only reason i did that its because my AdvUpdater is not finished yet as you noticed, it still in beta testing. i do lots of changes in account database and the best way to update the database with new changes is to remove everything and let the AdvUpdater create new ones.
but once i will release it, the accounts will be safe and secure.

ok i see what you mean and about that self-hosting thingy..
since my version is commercial version and i want to make money on accounts. the only way i can make money on self-hosting feature is by selling the product with customized IP address build-in.
but in this case, is it be allright for ppl to have only 1 account?


also one more update comming up to AdvUpdater:
im currently working on compression feature, so you will be able to upload/download files compressed wich will lead to faster performance to AdvUpdater. all files in your storage will be compressed. that way people will be able to hold more files in their limited storage packages. the compression rate that i made so far is about ~40%
so 2GB game will be maximum of 800MB inside my online storage.
