Recently my grandfather passed away and yesterday while getting together with the family for a grill out I found an 11 year old install disc in his office.

The story behind this game is back in 2000-2001 I was just getting into simple programming and game design along with 3D graphics. Unfortunately I couldn't do anything too complex because I was limited to a PC no faster then a 386 and a library of free game engines.

So my father made me a deal, finish a game with any engine of my choice, show that I put effort into it and he would buy me a brand new pc along with a better game development tool, I chose Dark Basic after looking around(almost tempted by Blitz )

I spent 3 months developing this game along with opening CGI cinematic, card collecting game, and over 30000 lines of dialogue, give or take.

Now there was two versions of this game, the first one had a major bug that wouldn't allow you to go beyond a point in the game and the second version fixed it. Unfortunately I have no idea which version this is...

Anyway I ended up finishing this, getting a new state of the art computer and Dark Basic. Some might remember that the first project I started with my new gear was Nemesis II along with mageline and rpg_cyco. Oh, fun times.

So for anyone who wants to play something from my past here it is for download:

Download

Picture of the case:

Video of the first area:

For a fun Easter egg, originally the game was suppose to be more sci-fi, especially the opening area. If you go to the game's directory under the movie folder you'll find the original opening CG cinematic. This one was longer with a whole fleet of ships flying towards a moon with a huge flagship in the middle. I was doing a lot of experimenting with cameras and 3ds Max effects at the time.

Side Note: There are a few bugs so use multiple saves. :S

"PUSH THOUGH!!!", was that supposed to be 'push through'? And I recognise some of that music from DBC, or am I going crazy? Anyway, looks pretty cool, there were actually some pretty cool games to come from those tools, I remember downloading them and loving them. But the fact the RTP was 20mb, it actually took what seemed like forever to download on my lowly 56k modem, but it definitely saved on downloading games that required the RTP to play.

I remember having lots of fun with RPG Maker 95, 2000 and later, 2003. They were great tools, I've been tempted to buy RPG Maker VX for Nostalgia's sake.

Unfortunately the computers I had on my old creations on a all dead and because some of the stuff I made on RPGM and The Games Factory I thought were pretty neat, I am jealous of your sense of nostalgia right there. I miss Omega the Hedgehog, my Sonic clone that I was going to release on a Sonic Fangame site (which is actually still going).

Oh and 'downloading'.

Lol, yah there was a lot of spelling mistakes. I didn't have any testers so I had to do my best.

I'm about 1 hour through and there's a lot of nostalgia. I think some of the music is DB too, but I could be wrong.

Let me know what you think.

Josh, epic... so can you break down the various elements?

graphics
video
3d-cg
etc like what packages you may have used and the various elements presiding within... erm well basically trying to turn this into an interview of how you made the game way back when...

Gonna have a look at this now, just finished downloading it a while ago. I thought I'd bump this thread and "subscribe" to it so I can review the game properly when I've played it...

...IF I can finish it. You'll loose marks if it freezes
Lol, just kidding, looks fun from the video you posted. I noticed some Final Fantasy references subtly woven into it for the hardcore fans (Like me and that guy just above me).
Am looking forward to playing )

Yeah, that was the thing with RPG Maker games, but they were still great to play (and make). RPG Maker 2003 was my favourite because it had a decent battle system, which they dropped in XP, VX and VX Ace, though it is possible to script your own battle system.

Anyway, had a quick go Moondawg, it seems like a cool little project with good ideas in it. Can certainly see you put a lot of effort into it to prove yourself as the event scripts are quite well set out and paced. I'll excuse the bad writing because you were 11 years old. Nice touch with the opening movie. I generally hated the RPG Maker 2000 default sprites and could never find that they fit in any of the genres I wanted to cover, so typically I replaced the sprite sheets with what I could find on that net (and fortunately now there's the Charas Project), so it would have been cool to see more alternative sprite sheets to help fit what you were going for, but obviously, there was a limit to what was out there.

Always fun to find stuff like that! Quite a lot of content in there - pretty impressive for being that long ago. I've made it to the first town so far.

Awesome guys! I haven't had a chance to play, been super busy lately. I'm hoping this is the good build. You'll know the bug if you exit the third town with the boat and end up in the wrong world map!

@Seppuku
Josh was a sophomore, not 11.. and he made it in DB, not RPG Maker
Definitely going to try this later on!

Remembered my rpg maker days. those were fun. loved the 2003 version. I never finished my 50 main character rpg game. lol, each with their own storyline and intersects together and you can choose up to 4 characters. There was a character select screen which I'd thought was cool at the time. one day I might even buy XP version just to play with.

I just found a budd load of concept art and storyboards that I made for Nemesis I-II-III. I'll be uploading that tomorrow for some fun.

Just finished playing up to the first town. Pretty good so far.

Josh, tell me, did you make the music yourself? The reason I ask is (and prolly nobody here but me noticed) but that music in the Mayor's house in the first town has the same melody as the ending theme for Rockman 4 (aka Mega Man 4) when you ride the train home? Was that a subtle reference? I throw references into stuff I write too

(sorry for the poor quality, it was the only short clip I could find on youtube without too much other junk)

So game's looking good so far. My only complaints being the fonts (a little hard to read) and the gamepad can't be configured so I'm a little uncomfy on the button config).

Graphics really look nice and detailed and the handling's good (nothing is sticky like many retro RPGs). Will be playing this through to the end (And I don't say that about many home-brew RPGs). Well done.

Okay, I've reached a standstill and I think it's a bug so here's a brief report.

(SPOILER WARNING for those who aren't there yet)

Is this the doomed version then?

*sigh* Doomed version confirmed.
The bug is your teleported to the wrong world map causing you to be unable to move-on to the next area.

Oh well. No I feel like remaking it.
