... No one has mentioned this?

Seems like it's pretty much exactly the same thing we already had for PC, except it'll now have achievements.

Given how difficult it is to get the original without paying lots of money (last time I checked they were selling for £60-£80), making me regret the fact I sold my PC version years ago, this is good news to me. I am happy I kept my PC version of VIII, though if SE did re-release that it'd be kinda cool. I wonder if the revamp will mean higher resolutions? Whilst it wouldn't really affect the pre-rendered background or FMVs, I think it'd still help make it clearer on modern screens.

I loved this game and the new Final Fantasies have been a big disappointment in my books, this is the second good news Square have delivered this year. (the other good news is that FFXI, the MMO that didn't fail so horribly and doesn't suffer from WoW-clone-itis, is getting a new full expansion pack)

It looks like they're only adding three new features, achievements, online item store for easy cheating and that ability to play your save game anywhere...so not worth it.

I still own both the PS and PC version along with FFVIII, so not for me.

...seriously, an item shop...SE is just milking fans.

Can ignore.

Won't use.

That just takes the challenge out of it. But, if I can refrain from using the save anywhere system I think it won't be too much of a problem.

This is SE after all, they like to milk something for what its worth, because FFVII is so loved, they're literally bleeding money because it. I mean, it's got its spin offs, it's got a movie, its got lots of merchandise, but people will pay money for it, so they'll make money from it.

It's a cloud-save system, meaning you can play anywhere on any PC. Not save anywhere at any time in the game

This is really good news to me The first PC release is a massive mission to actually get working on the newer OS's and graphics hardware...
I still own the original PSOne disks though. Alas, I don't have any kind up PlayStation, and I don't like emulators.

So this is really good for me

I enjoy food quite a lot.

Interestingly, FFVIII is easy as pie to get working properly on Windows 7, more so than it was for Vista (where you have to relocate the .exe somewhere else so that it didn't crash). I was hoping FFVII would be the same, but haven't tried it since XP. I remember playing these on Windows 98 and I remember having FFVII lag on certain summons because my PC was under specced at the time.

I know I got a PS2 laying around somewhere, would love to find it again, just because I still have FFIX. I also still have FFVIII on PS, but the disks are faulty now (at least they didn't run last time I tried it). Unlike most of my old games, I actually know exactly where they are.

Lol, did you stand your PS on it's side? I remember this was the only way to get most of the cutscenes to work with my original PS system.

I just wish they would just re-release it without any changes other than higher res support via native resizing and filtering. Also, pc version didn't sound absolutely identical to the ps version but that could've been the soundcard I had back then.

I hate that they added achievements and an online item store to the game. Why must everything be bloody achievements today? What happened to the achievement of playing and enjoying the game? Well, each to their own I guess but I'm gonna hold out until I have the skills to build my own ff7-dedicated emulator. Then I'll sit running it on my ps1 and emulator and fine-tune it until it's perfect - even if I don't leave my house for a year! *tries to act like he isn't obsessed*.

The PC version (it's the same for FF8) came with the ability to install soundfonts (with some Yamaha synthesiser software) that improved the sound of the midis. Unfortunately, I could only ever get them to work on Windows 98. It was damn cool.

I think this was the Yamaha Synth (SYXG70) that was used in FFVII, see below:

[edit]
Just came across this:
http://ffsf.aaron-kelley.net/download_8.html

Might give it a try on my copy of FF8 PC.
[edit2] Need a card that's compatible with DLS soundfonts. In all these years cheap onboard sound cards still aren't compatible with soundfonts? My ancient pentium 200mhz PC had a soundcard that could use them.

I'm imagining it now. You're so lucky!
By the time I actually got FF7-PC I was running WinXP and had a Playstation 2. My PS1 at that stage was broken and the whole reason I got another PS1 2nd-hand was for parts (My laser unit had packed in and the other PS1's board had been stuffed by some idiot who thought he knew how to chip it. It was a great deal coz I paid very little for it and I still use it for "organ donations" as, beside the board, every part in it is like new).
