What is Day Z?
Day Z is a multiplayer online mod for ArmA2 (Armed Assault II) (a hyper-realistic military FPS) which has broken loose of the core ArmA fan-base and continues to spread like the zombie virus that lends the game its setting.

[/img]

The fictitious post-soviet nation of Chernarus is an unforgiving landscape besieged by hordes of infected zombies. Every minute is a struggle for survival in a world where every resource is scarce and death is always one careless step away. Your task is purely to survive by whatever means necessary. You will need stealth and caution to evade the infected and scavenge enough supplies to feed, medicate and defend yourself. However, your true test of character comes upon meeting other survivors: will you aid them and work together in this harsh world or will your greed, hunger or paranoia get the better of you? There are no rules here, who is to say what is right or wrong when survival is at stake?

Can you truly trust anyone?...

How Does it Play?
I've been watching the development of this mod for a while but I wanted to play it myself before writing about it. It's refreshing to experience such an unforgiving game and while it's still firmly in the alpha phase there is plenty of meat here to enjoy. I use the term "enjoy" loosely as this isn't a game you will have "fun" playing; it's very stressful, slow-moving and the day/night cycle runs on a twenty-four-hour clock so be prepared for very long and very dark nights.
Your life in Chernarus consists of nervously scuttling between buildings through many farms, towns and cities and over the vast forested hills in search of vital supplies. You begin with almost nothing and it may take a while to locate even the most basic weapon but there's an impressive arsenal to be found if you look in the right places; you may even find parts to repair road vehicles and helicopters to make travelling that little bit safer.

The ArmA2 engine is dedicated to providing realism, which Day Z takes full advantage of, requiring you to feed and hydrate yourself, bandage wounds to stem bleeding, and even seek warmth and shelter to avoid catching cold. All these levels to maintain and the scarcity of resources required to do so can be extremely frustrating to a new player, couple this with the already exhaustive controls of ArmA and it can be a daunting experience for many (I thoroughly recommend playing the un-modded ArmA2 first to get to grips with the controls) but if the challenge and atmosphere of the game has captured your imagination it doesn't take much effort to come to terms with it and see past the minor issues this mod still has; alpha is alpha after all.

You could at least say something about the gameplay. We're developers, we don't care about your well-written but extremely obvious backstory.

But it does sound like a blast, from what I've heard. What's interesting about it is that it puts 70 or so players in the same world, throws some zombies in for extra fun, and then says "no rules, yo". It's basically the ultimate expression of "open world" in terms of interacting with other players.

I have played it for a while, and I enjoyed it. But it has some flaws, comunicating is realy hard, leading to the fact that 90% of all players kill on sight. Another thing is Armas crappy inventory system. I and almost everyone that has played this mod have probably droped something by accident. I once dropez my backpack for an empty can, and then the item dissapeared. Another flaw is that for a newcommer, using an item is realy hard. My first life, where I survived for 50 minutes or something, I got atacked by 3 zombies and started bleeding. But I didn't find how to use my bandage and could only wathch as my character died a slow and painfull death.

One last flaw is the fact that your character is still in the game and loosing food and health when logged out, combined with the troubble of connecting to servers that I have experienced has lead to me almost dieing a couple of times from the lack of water and food

I got arma 2 combined operations for the DayZ mod, but I stayed for the MCC Sandbox addon http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?112854-MCC-Sandbox-Mission-making-the-easy-way. Just spent the last couple hours spawning massive tank battles and blowing up jets with my friends

But yeah, DayZ is awesome! You have to set up tactical assaults, and it feels like a true survival.

Quote: "One last flaw is the fact that your character is still in the game and loosing food and health when logged out"

Really? I've never noticed this.

There are a crapton of glitches though. Me and some friends were raiding a barracks when some jerk with a hatchet ran inside (with a ton of zombies on his tail) and logged out. Of course by that time we were out of pistol ammo (the quieter weapon), so we switched to rifles and that attracted an even bigger horde. All the doors in the barracks were open, and since zombies can attack through walls... they were behind the doors attacking us and whenever we shot we hit the door instead of the zombie. We logged out (logging out despawns the zombies. Kinda lame I know), and logged back in, but I was already bleeding. Of course, my body had glitched out, so even though we had tons of medical supplies, my friend couldn't bandage me. I had to watch as my blood dropped from 9,000 healh...

I play DayZ with some friends and we are 90% bandits xD. We hide and search out players walking around towns and snipe them.

Yesterday though, I was running to catch up with a friend and ran right into a stashed Jeep in the woods behind Pik Kozlova peek. I ran up and then noticed a guy crouching by the Jeep so I killed him and then noticed a second and chased him to kill him also, but had to reload which gave him enough time to run away far enough and turn and shoot at me, I hit him and he shot and broke my legs and soon after killed me outright. I ran back to the same place but he had drove off and took his friends loot with him but left mine behind kindly enough xD.

Darn it I just died! Lasted 3 days that time, my best so far.
I was on the roof of what I guess was a hospital in Electro -- since there were boxes of medical supplies everywhere -- I turned around and was confronted by a guy laying prone pointing a rifle at my head! Now He might have been friendly I don't know, I don't think you can lower your weapon while prone and there's no easy way to communicate (I don't even know how to work the chat properly), but I couldn't tell so I charged at him with my axe! I landed a blow but he shot me about five times and I died instantly.

It's annoying because he might have been friendly, he could have been lying there for ages just waiting to say hi, but it's impossible to tell. I think I will take a break from this until some better communication is added because I'd really like to play in a group but that seems impossible unless everyone has a mic.

I don't know why they haven't utilised the sounds from ArmA2, you could press a key to shout "Hold your fire!" and such.

Shh... you're pretty.

I'm guessing you don't have a mic? It's convenient if you do. You just have to switch to direct chat and hold caps to talk.

Me and my friend started playing this on our private server, and it's TONS of fun. There are a few bugs and glitches, but apart from that it's really really cool.

I just saw a games magazine at the store which has ArmA II Black edition on the DVD. The magazine itself sucks but I thought 5.50 EUR = 6.73 USD is not a bad price, is it? Is there anything else I would need to play this (except for skills which I don't have )?

I hope they form an independent company or Bohemia help development, there's only so far an engine can go for something it was not intended for, they will need to make their own game for the project to be fully realised.

I hope we will be able to enter all buildings eventually. This is my main gripe with the game as you can spot a building from way off and it's a natural landmark to head for but a lot of the time you can't go inside and there's nothing there. Frustrating and time-wasting. Even if there was literally nothing inside there would at least be shelter.

I don't like night time at all - need to pull brightness and contrast to max (well, basicly kill contrast) to be able to see ANYTHING.

Well, if you are new to the controls, you WILL be overwhelmed, I was lucky to have an experienced friend with me who knows the game well. Once you know the controls, it's a pretty straight forward look for supplies and get out of there, you should avoid zombies at all costs as they are your worst enemies. When you get hit you might start bleeding, and you will use up your bandages pretty quickly, losing blood has lots of bad effects so avoid that. The most effective way of avoiding zombies is to go prone, as zombies are blind like crap when you are prone (default "Z" key). Avoid other players as you don't know if they are hostile or not.

USE GUNS ONLY IN EMERGENCIES. The Hatchet is the most useful tool in the game, not only does it collect wood, but it can also be used as a weapon. Guns attract zombies from miles away and you can be easily overwhelmed. Bring a friend with you if you can, as they can help you carry supplies and you can give each other blood transfusions which are really helpful.

Just stay away from zombies and other players and you'll survive.

Well... got myself killed cuz I didn't know how to wrap my bandages I was down to 2000 blood by the time I figured it out. I was close to dead anyway though cuz I couldn't find any food or water. It wasn't until about 2 hours of playing time in before I could even find an axe to defend myself with. This game is brutal. Finally a game I can feel a real sense of challenge with.

Come play with me on US #500 www.blacklistedsociety.com

I played it again last night and I'd forgotten how god-awful the controls are! Arma has the worst inventory system I've ever seen. For the first time I worked out how to use the torch, if you have a pistol and don't want to drop it on the floor this is the only way to use the torch:

1. go into inventory.
2. open backpack.
3. move pistol to backpack.
4. close backpack.
5. right click torch.
6. remove from tool belt.
7. exit inventory.
8. switch weapon.
9. press L to switch torch on/off.

and to get the pistol back you have to do the whole thing in reverse! Whoever coded that has never played a game in their life!

So grabbing my torch is apparently the most complicated thing ever bet I have instant access to all my road flares and empty tin cans? ...
