hey all, i have quite old laptop, this one given me by a friend as non-working one. but i fixed it.
this is Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro v2000. its 12 years old.
on the Keyboard there is a "wireless" icon swich On/Off also with LED that shows if its Enabled.
in this data sheet, it says that it IS includes the wireless module build-in. but i never got it to work. i dont know why.
i tryed all kind of Linux versions, windows xp, 7 and even the new windows 8. YES it does worked on this old laptop and non of them recognized the wireless module.

this is the laptop technical features:
http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/laptops/fujitsu-siemens-amilo-pro-v2000/details/

any ideas whats wrong with the wifi module?
maybe there are no wifi module at all? or its somehow not working inside the laptop?

It may be possible that the wireless module has been taken out but to see if it exists is quite easy because there will be two wires that come from it (if they're connected) and head towards the monitor (which it wraps around). The module itself can be anything from 2cm x 3cm upto 5cm x 8cm approx. If it is there then take it out, clean it, and the board, and re-insert it.

Appart from that, you might need a wireless dongle, but to get the installations going just hope that the ethernet works.

@WLGfx: thanks. that will help me a lot.
i hope the module will be named too. so i can see if its wireless module and not something else.
btw, is there any chance to insert a bluetooth module too? maybe on ebay you can find a combined Wifi+BT module i can swich? cuz no bluetooth option on it at all.

@ Sergey

Ok 1 Gb I can see now, but still... Windows 7 and above is not made to work on a single core CPU with only 1.50 Ghz. It should be impossible.

Cheers,

Martin.

Maybe I am wrong, but your Wireless

could be just burned out or broken? You can't see if it's broken without special tools, and that's not so easy with them. It makes sence then.

@mrHandy: im pretty good at electronics. i might dont have any "special" tool to connect the wifi module to check, but there is soo much knowlage on the internet about those modules. i even can replace it with another one. and it wont cost too much to do that.

Doing a quick google and it looks like a common issue.

Looks like the the wlan module/button is software activated by the launch manager software that you ideally need to load on windows startup. Without that loaded apparantly the wifi can not be enabled.

Other people also mention that the card may be disabled in the bios (sounds unlikely though).

Actually, Windows 7 was made to be resource friendly, I have gotten windows 7 to run decent on a pentium-3 950MHz with 256Mb of RAM and a 32Mb 3D accelerator (nVidia TNT2).

Did you manage to get the wireless card working in the laptop? Or did you have to purchase one?

I've a laptop with windows 7 working great on it. Acer 5315, 2Gb, Intel 960. And from what I've seen of Windows 7, it is not resource hungry like Vista is, but I've not yet tried it only on 1Gb memory yet though.

@ Mr Bigglesworth

Then I guess I was wrong . However, I still don't understand that W7 doesn't work on my laptop wich has 1.5 GB of ram and a 1.73 Ghz processor.

Cheers,

Martin.

On my notebook wlan could be enabled at startup from bios. But button doesn't work till windows loading. But LED and button works even without drivers.

Youre welocme

Also by tool I meant tool that can detect broken electic chains. I don't know how it calls. It is used for detecting malfunctions on motherboards.

Following on from my previous post which sounds like you overlooked.

The V2000 wireless card can only be enabled if you have loaded the launch manager software (wbutton.exe) as this handles the extra laptop buttons. Wifi starts off disabled when you boot and can only be enabled by pressing wifi button, but that only works if you have installed launch manager software.

Should be on driver CD if you still have that or downloadable from FS website although for XP only, no idea if works on Vista or W7, but you can only try.

@spooky
Without button manager all button works fine on my notebook, except battery profile switch* (obviously), but their icons just don't appear on screen.
Also I have multimedia keyboard that doesn't need drivers at all.

Edit: and maybe smth else like light brightness, I don't remember exactly

I agree that most laptops, including mine, do not need any launch/button manager software loaded to make wifi work, but apparantly the V2000 is an odd beast that actually requires the launch manager for wifi to be turned on.

Check the Device Manager for a manual flip switch, did you do a hardware inspection that the module is in fact there?
