I personaly recommend purchasing 'Milkshape' for modeling which is relatively inexpensive and has 'many' tutorials to get you started.

Everyone will swear by their program, for me it's blender (it's free). You're probably best finding all the demos of programs you can to find what's right for you.

All browsers should come with compulsory spell checks.

i prefer blender, its easy to learn to use, its basicly a free version of the 3500$ software out there and has like 95% of the features

Ac3d baby! whilst it doesn't have as many features as blender, it is by far the easiest to get the hang of (I couldn't make anything in any other program). It has a 2 week free trial available.
