http://egamer.co.za/2012/07/when-a-game-publisher-goes-bankrupt/

Quote: "It is always sad to hear when a big (or small) game developer files for bankruptcy. As gamers we tend to view it from only one perspective: that of a company that can no longer create the games we love and play. I think, as gamers, we really do take our entertainment for granted. But when a developer files for bankruptcy there is a side to the whole process we don’t see, it is just not about the company closing and not being able to publish games any more. It is also about the hundreds of folks who now sit without a job and a steady income, and trust me speaking from personal experience it is definitely not something I would wish on my worst enemies.

Because gamers in general only focus on the entertainment aspect of our hobby and tend to forget the human aspect that works behind the scenes to bring us our favourite entertainment form. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect everything to be rainbows and unicorns; the financial downturn of the markets have affected everyone including my financial manager aka my wallet. But it really hits home when you yourself get affected by something like a layoff or a bankruptcy even more so when it involves your favourite developer........ "

I don't agree completely with the guy.Not that I am a COD fan, but the plots were decent enough, no corny voice acting, having COD 15 in a few years will not be a bad thing, as it works and it is safe.

I would however add that he seems to ignore that publishers are not the evil guys made out to be here. They have to take considerable risks with front money, and the advertizing of the game, I mean the most expensive advertizing stint belongs to COD, well over 3 billion was spend just on promoting the game, That is insane !!! But absolutely worth it.

So they take over a few studio's in the process and employees lose their jobs. But what the author forgets is that this has been going on for a very long time.It is a cutthroat industry. It has always been safe games with the same plot, for a reason.

Just been chatting to my neighbours teenage daughter and it turns out she's big into UFOs and aliens.

Which is cool because tomorrow she's getting abducted.

...I miss Sierra.

Anyway, I agree that the game industry is just like most any industry. There are take overs and there are layoffs. Company's stick with a proven formula because it ensures it will sell. *shrugs A business is a business.

This is identical to hundreds of employees from any other industry being laid off. I must admit that it's difficult to feel a special level of care when it can be argued that this is a form of consumer natural selection.

Those that spend big budget on ideas that are unique, but unattractive flail. The ones that give the consumer what they want succeed and thrive. I must ask that, given it cites the reduction in Western RPG diversity. I have to admit, I haven't played Amalur. I've played Skyrim, and can't really consider that mediocre or boring, it's an extremely ambitious project.

Will we end up with an industry dominated by CoD and Halo? No. Just like in any other industry, we lose some, but more are started, too. Fresh ideas enter with new companies, small businesses that get a niche and start to pull their way into the fray. I mean, look at Mojang. Case in point.

Sierra made some epic games. I love all of the City Builders Series, from Pharaoh to Cleopatra to Zeus and Caesar. I have all of those games on CD still.

I wish EA would hurry up and go bankrupt already.
