Normally, I'd buy a dedicated sound card but I don't feel like spending the money right now. Plus, I haven't found a single one where reviews made me feel positive about it. I also left out a case because I'll reuse my current Antec most likely.

Asus P8Z77-V LK - $140 (minus$20 mir)

Intel i7-3770K 3.4GHz - $340

EVGA GeForce GTX 560 2GB - $210 (minus$20 mir)

SeaSonic 750w gold - $160

G.Skill 16GB DDR3 1600 - $97

Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB SSD - $200

Total: $1146.94 + $7.33 shipping

Awesome sauce. I built my current computer for $333.36 (the '3's stood out to me). Yours most definitely beats it. i][/i])

What are your current machine's specs?

Cheers,
Aaron

Abit IP35 Pro motherboard
Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz (1333 bus, not the 1066)
4GB DDR2 800
GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB
2 WD drives, 1 Seagate (internal)
1 WD external, 1 NAS (Buffalo with Hitachi drives)
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound

According to Speccy, the seagate drive (320GB) runs about 10 degrees warmer than either my 40GB or 1TB WD drives. It is however my system drive.

I was going to reuse my current DVD drive, but I think I'll just spend $20 on a new one. Mine has always given me issues with writing to the outer parts of discs.

I'm expecting my army bonus soon, so that's gonna by my computer and probably some laser eye surgery (which if i was to stay active, it'd be free, doh).

If you haven't ordered already, I recommend spending a little extra cash on a GTX 560 ti, instead of the plain 560. It's got a good amount of extra power for the small amount of extra money.

Some of the Ti's have lower clock speeds than the one I chose. It's kind of confusing. Whereas my core clock is 850MHz, many are less than 800 and so as low as 732mhz. I'm not sure the extra $70 is really worth it. Is there something else about the Ti I don't know?

Depends which 560 ti you get. The Asus one is really good, has higher specs than the EVGA one you picked out. The ti's also do a good bit better than 560s with resolutions above 1920x1200.
The ti's generally perform better than 560s (just speaking from experience here, I've noticed that ti's are faster, and better than 560s), you can also see here ti's do a much better job with texture filtering.

I'd go for a Gen-3 mobo, so you have PCI-E 3.0 instead of only 2.0, might be a usefull feature for later GPU's ( and why not wait one month for the 660, I hear it's coming out mid august ).

The board has 2 PCIe 3.0 slots. And I won't spend $500-1000 on a GPU, so the 660 doesn't mean anything to me.

660 will probably only be $300, I mean you can find 670's for almost 400.

I've added an extra SSD to the setup. Newegg had a 120GB OCZ Agility 3 for only $70. I thought it'd make a nice scratch disk. Though after I bought it, it occurred to me that I'd no longer be running on only 4gb of ram either, so I might not even need that right away.

Still not convinced on the stability of SSDs. A friend of mine whose OS is installed on his SSD kept getting odd errors indicative of hard drive failure four or five months after building his PC. Of course it's heresay, but still, I'd save the $200 for the SSD.

I tried to do my research before settling on an SSD. The OCZ I bought cause it was cheap and I'm unlikely to lose anything if it does go bad because of what I intend to use it for. As for the Mushkin, it was among the top rated drives from Toms Hardware and very few reviews seem to have issues with it.

I should have everything put together by this weekend and I'll try to keep updates as to the quality of the drive.

If I recall, SSDs don't get fragmented, right?

If I remember correctly, SSD's are constantly defragmenting themselves. I might be wrong though.

In windows 7 and 8 ssd's are automatically set to not defrag. Degrag isn't needed on SSDs, it will just reduce the lifespan and won't offer any benefit.

SSD's aren't affected by fragmentation as there is no overhead from moving the read head, because there isn't one.

So I was going over my order invoice, making sure I download all the rebate forms before the deadline (which has happened before and they wouldn't give it to me), and noticed the SSD I bought for $200 was now only $180. Talked with customer service and while they refuse to do any price matching or price guarantee, they offered me a $20 gift card for being a valued customer. That works for me!

When you can buy 16gb of ram for $96 is it really worth spending $70 on an ssd for swap? Why not just use that $70 to buy more ram?

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

ram doesn't have permanent storage and you can't boot an OS stored in ram, generally
