Slenderman's Shadow - Sanatorium - Map 1

Developers: Marc Steene and Wray Burgess (Bugsy)

Hey everyone,
Here's a small colab project between me and Bugsy.

This game is based off of the indie game 'Slender' by Mark J. Hadley (AgentParsec). It shares the same gameplay elements as the original - you must collect 8 pages while avoiding the enemy. There are some differences which will make playing a somewhat unique experience - different AI, new sounds, and a different environment.

And for anyone who gets 8 pages...there are 3 surprises waiting in store

This is map 1 of 5. Thanks to Wolf for his modelling assistance. If this gets positive reviews we'll go on to make more maps with new gameplay elements, i.e. puzzles and so on.

Enjoy!

seems like slenderman is getting more popular around here!

looks good, I've noticed that you get a chance to shoot slenderman in the face with an MK XIX, nice, that'll teach him.

and what was going on at the end?

I'm familiar with this, but I'm still learning!

There's a secret code you can type in the map to go directly to the minigame, in case people didn't want to have to play through the level again. By some stroke of luck, you must have pressed all the keys.

OMG!!! I just download the game and played it and I totally freaked my pants. I just collected the fourth page and was going out of the room and he was standing there. I screamed like a little girl. This is the best FPS Creator game that I have played its simple but it can scare the hell out of you. How is the Slenderman\'s moving made is it made with waypoint\'s or triggering zones. And is the engine modified so it doesn\'t have a menu.

You have to beat the game to find out To anyone who finds out the code, please don't post it here - I'll post it after a while but it's a little reward for those who take the time to complete it.

Nope, the engine isn't modified, I just altered the titlepage script to skip directly to loading. I tried a lot of methods for Slenderman's script. DarkAI was good, but predictable - he would always end up behind the player and that isn't scary. I ended up using a method where he scans the area for a valid spawn location using raycasts, and if he's not in the player's view, will spawn.

This looks very promising. I played the original game and it made me throw my laptop I freaked out so much.

I am curious of how long you have been developing this?

Get all 8 pages and you can play it, it's a Pewdiepie survival game, you have to kill the barrels and teleporting naked guys

Not long at all, Bugsy did the level in 2 days. I think I started August 3rd, but the majority of that time was waiting for missing textures/model unwraps.

I just have a question about the downloader:

Why do you have to use a programm that wants to put some crapware on my pc?

EDIT: And I also strongly object to downloaders that neither show a percentage nor estimatet time for the progress. This junkware just shows a green bar thatt gets filled over and over again. It has not even a cancel button so I had to use the task manager to kill it.

Sorry, but I'll pass this one and everything else coming through sendspace.

In case you find my grammar and spelling weird ---> native German speaker ^^

Well, I have to agree with Wolf on this one.

I frankly find the whole Slenderman thing quite boring and laughable and not even remotely scary (especially since he reminds me of G-Man ), so I didn't really enjoy this game either, especially since it's exactly the same "gameplay" as in Slender, just in a different map.

I'd suggest taking this in a different direction, instead of the fixed "collect 8 pages while avoiding some creature", since it really wears off soon after playing / seeing it for the first time and doesn't offer much depth.

Since the "myth" isn't really well developed as of yet, there'd be plenty of options to make the character your own, and countless interesting gameplay ideas as well.

Cool to see that you replicated the complete game in FPSC tho', goes to show that FPSC does have the capabilities to potentially produce successful indie titles.

@The Storyteller 01: Uncheck the "Download with sendspace accelerator and get recommended offers." box located underneath the "Download" button and you're able to download using your browser... worked for me at least.

@Marc Steene: According to Avast the website counter on your site is malicious - there are enough others around, so it'd probably be better to switch the service, since people tend to freak out over such warnings - even if it's just a false positive.

Sorry about that Storyteller - I did try hosting it on my own web server but the upload speed was about 7kb/s which would have taken hours so I resorted to using Sendspace. I think you clicked on a spam link because you shouldn't have had to download a program. If you click "click here to start download from sendspace" the download will begin.

That's true, this was really just a test to see if it was possible to replicate Slender, and whether the scare factor would transfer over to internal environments (it definitely does). I've been thinking of ways to develop the idea, but haven't come up with anything yet.

This game's map actually has a creepier factor then just plain woods. I got scared easier playing this then the actual Slender game.
Great work!

My only problem I have is that the time you are given to complete the level before Slenderman gets you seems a little too short.
Also I've tried replaying the game only to instantly be taken by Slenderman; a bug perhaps?

Fantastic work.

That's good to hear, I think the idea works better for interior maps as there are a lot of corners that he could be around.

How many pages did you get before you first sighted him? Also with the second issue, I believe that's probably due to me not resetting his variables correctly upon reload, I'll get to work on it. Thanks for the report.

IDK. I've played various times. At first I didn't see him much but after my 3-4 play through... man did he pop up. I've only gotten to a maximum of 6 or 7 pages.
After I get that far... I get grabbed.

Getting page 8 is a pain. If you want to beat the game, my advice is to avoid sprinting till at least page 4, you need to conserve your max stamina. Also, avoid staring at him, that will increase his aggression level. His aggression level also slowly increases with time so plan your route carefully and try not to double back on yourself.

FPSCgamerguy2,

For some reason this is happening to a few people, I packed the game with Vishnu Packer and I'm not sure why this happens. You should have 3 options, 1 will cancel the extract, 1 will ask you for a password, and one will extract the game.

I'll be uploading v1.1 in a few hours using FPSC V-Packer, which will hopefully resolve the issue and add some new stuff

Okay, v1.1 is up (check it out if you've been having problems, I ditched Vishnu Packer for FPSC V-Packer).

Change log:
--Increased texture quality
--Changed packer as some people were having issues with passwords etc.
--Decrease file size and memory consumption
--Decreased decryption time
--Enemy AI tweaked
--Page locations shifted
--Bug fixes

I played it, and whilst I got a few jolts, I really liked it. I specially liked the dim, odd and mysterious atmosphere you immersed into the game, be it of your design. I loved the AI, whilst simple, stayed true to what we picture Slenderman could be like. Again, excellent work.

Well I've played your game literally over 20 times and have not beaten it once. I know where every single page is and have tried multiple routes. I'm even convinced there is one room in your game that triggers his aggro level to go sky high.

Might I suggest finding pages to lower his aggro even if by just a small tad? I don't think I can stand to play with game anymore right now. I just don't think "winning" is achievable enough.

I am in love with this game. I have been playing it for two hours and I can't even get past page four.

It has very nice map layout and atmosphere, really immerses you into the map.

Thanks for replaying ASTEK. You're right, the AI does need a lot of balancing, and I'll be conducting a couple of tests to try and make him more manageable. I'll release the new AI with v1.2

I'm about to update the first post with video playthroughs.
