Had a discussion with a friend about the grudge movies. To me, those movies scares the hell out of me in a way no other movie does but my friend think they're just silly and stupid. He on the other hand can't stand movies like paranormal activity, wich to me is nothing.

So my question is what movie scares the living daylight out of you ?

I'm being truely honest here and I think I've only been scared by one movie and that was Event Horizon, but to be fair I was about 5 haha

I love horror movies and games, they just don't scare me.

Haha I can't stand how lame they are. I just felt like leaving the cinema when I went to see it.

Haha sounds interesting, to say the least.

I can't actually think of my favourite horror movie atm. I'll have to look through my collection.

Hmmm! As a kid, I found the movie "signs" to be quiet scary

I guess this is a good list of lesser known horror flicks and some classics you might like (from the top of my head):

"Rosemary's Baby"

"The Ring"

"Jacob's Ladder"

"Session 9"

"The Devils Backbone"

"The Thing"

"Kairo"

"Death watch"

"The Bunker"

"Grave Encounters" (this one is great if you like abandoned asylums and dont mind some campiness)

"From beyond"

"Eraserhead"

*********************************

Also, here are some infamous titles that should be really disturbing...which I haven't seen....and recommend not to. But hey! You asked for it

"Melancholie der Engel"

"Salo"

"August Underground’s Mordum" (stay away from that one)

"Cannibal Holocaust" (I saw that one... not THAT disturbing but very dark)

"I spit on your grave"

"Antichrist"

"Justin Bieber: Never say never"

Alright! this is getting dark! I guess I've done enough damage here

Beat me to it you sod.

I don't find horror movies scary, so I can't just the scariest, but I can say ones I enjoyed the most. I did find Tale of Two Sisters (a Korean horror film) to be very good. Old Boy was a good film as well, however, the twist is well...I won't spoil it, but it is a bit 'ew'. I like films where the characters have some kind of psychological problem.

Other great horror films -
Stephen King's Storm of the Century (probably dated now), this was my favourite.
Most other Stephen King films
The Thing
Alien & Aliens (the other 2 I don't think I'd count as horro)
Let the Right One In - I prefer the Swedish version, but the American version, Let Me In, is still very good. (Not sure if you can call it scary, but it's horror and very good). As I loved this film, I really recommend it. Normally I hate the American remakes, they did a good job this time. Plus, it's got the little girl from Kickass in it and she's a good actress.
Shutter Island - Loved it, nuff said. Love how you're able to interpret the film in many ways.
Dead Snow - Not scary, a bit cheesy and kinda funny in places, but still, it's Nazi zombies.
The Human Centipede - I kid, I've not actually seen it and to be frank, I don't want to.
Silence of the Lambs & Hannibal

Out of them. Which would I say is the most scary? Possibly The Thing. Hard to tell, I've been watching horror films since I was a wee kid and thus I don't find them scary, so it's a guess more than anything.

I have never found movies scary however, my favorite horror movies are...

Texas chainsaw massacre(original uncut version)
evil dead 2
Rose red
Shawn of the dead

actually... now I think about it, I have never actually seen the real movie before, but the film that Metallica's One is based upon is a very disturbing concept. I still get goosebumps when I listen to One or especially when I watch the film clip.

how about the 1974 Jack and the beanstalk cartoon? It was created as a childrens film and I saw it when I was little, watched it heaps. then saw it again a few years ago and it really is a very dark cartoon.

When I was really young "Jeepers Creepers" scared me a little bit, but I was over it after a minute or so. Later, "The Grudge" scared me a lot. So did "White Noise." Those were the last movies to have scared me, as I was also younger when I saw them. Movies don't really scare me any more. In rare cases they might heighten my paranoia temporarily, but that's about it.

The issue with finding a movie to be scary is you have to turn off your rational brain (turn on the emotional brain), set the appropriate environment (dark room, quiet house, surround sound, invite the local town serial killer as a guest, etc, etc). Turn off your cell phones too. Even if you're at home. Or, at the very least, put them far enough away to be annoying to have to use (but still reachable should an emergency arise).

Sometimes I'll watch movies with my niece. It gets annoying because she stares at her cell phone all the time or makes comments during the movie which makes it difficult to watch a movie you haven't seen before (or one you like very much). But it's nicer for movies you have seen that you just want to downplay. (e.g., B-movies.)

Oh, and Stephen King's It scared me a lot at first. "They all float down here..."

Here's a list of my favorite horror movies. I saw most of these when I was around six years old. (Except for the newer ones, of course. And Hellraiser, which I have only seen this year.) I've re-watched the Halloween films many times. There's supposedly going to be a Halloween 3D (Rob Zombie universe, but not done by Rob Zombie) and a Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D (Ha!). I'm looking forward to both of those, minus the 3D.

Favorites (Classic Slasher)
Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween 4, Halloween 5, Halloween 6 (Producer's Cut and normal), Halloween H20, Halloween Resurrection, Rob Zombie's Halloween, Rob Zombie's Halloween 2
A Nightmare on Elm Street (original). (I've seen all the others, but I don't remember them well enough to judge.)
Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th 2, Friday the 13th 3 (Jason gets his mask!), Friday the 13th 4 (seen the others, don't remember them well enough to judge)
Hellraiser, Hellraiser 2, Hellraiser 3, Hellraiser 4, Hellraiser 5 (I liked this one a lot); am still viewing these on Netflix. It looks like I'll be disappointed me Hellraiser: Revelations though.
The Leprechaun. (Don't remember the rest.)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original).
The Ring, The Ring 2.

Favorite Dark Movies
I Saw the Devil (This is a Korean film, so you have to be okay with subtitles or speak Korean.)
I Spit On Your Grave (2010).

Favorite Unintentional Horror Comedies
Critters, Critters 2
The Leprechaun in the Hood
April Fools (ending was hilarious)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4

Other
The Rise of Leslie Vernon: This was a hilarious "mockumentary." If you've seen a few of the movies above, it'll be a great watch.

Quote: "I spit on your grave"

I liked the 2010 remake. The older version though, couldn't stand it. (Was way too quiet on Netflix and it didn't feel authentic.)

Quote: "but the film that Metallica's One is based upon is a very disturbing concept"

Which film is that?

Quote: "The Human Centipede - I kid, I've not actually seen it and to be frank, I don't want to."

I have! I have not, however, seen The Human Centipede 2.

Cheers,
Aaron

I heard that was pretty funny, I should really watch it, but could I justify spending money on it? It's never on TV.

I guess another good film is the more recent Hills Have Eyes. I enjoyed that film.

The last time I remember being scared by a movie was The Wizard of Oz. I don't remember how old I was at the time, but the wicked witch scared the heck out of me.

Lol, Russians got the right idea, scare the little beggars into behaving themselves.

The first movie to scare me as a kid was 'The Singing Ringing Tree', it was in the days when UK had only three channels and it appeared on BBC2...in colour no less and the fact it was so obviously a foreign movie took me out of my young comfort zone. The dwarf just creeped me out.

I guess its a matter of age and exposure to what we find scary, there comes a point when movies don't do it anymore for the simple reason that they dont leave enough to the imagination, unlike a book where it's all up to you how to interpret that dread imagery.

Still one of the scariest movies ever made has to be the Exorcist for its atmosphere and symbolism which drove a few people off the edge in its time.

As for Salo and The August Underground movies these are more repellant and disgusting, affecting us on a much more base level than Horror or even scary as you can watch them from the comfort of a cinema seat or your armchair its easy to distance yourself from this kind of depravity, in fact its neccessary. Although Cannibal Holocaust would be classed as Horror it seems laughable today when you think of how it sucked you in back in its time.

It may not be particularly scary but Dreamcatcher is up there with Event Horizon in terms of production and storytelling, the most recent movies to appeal in any sense for me as even remotely scary are Insidious and Mirrors.

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

I saw Mirrors and thought it was a cool concept. I stopped watching Insidious about fifteen minutes through because I couldn't get into it. I might be able to now, but there are other movies I'd rather watch if I'm going to sink two hours~ into it.

Ringu - Sadako crawling out of the television is my personal favourite horror moment.

A Tale Of Two Sisters - Twisted, original and unusual story that unfolds nicely, packed with some pretty atmospheric and tense moments.

Spider Forest - Same here... the story goes back and forth and it's easy to lose yourself in the plot and actually manages to play with the expectations.

Noroi - Found footage done right. Atmospheric, rich background story and multiple plots that seemingly don't have much in common but blend together really well over time.

Kansen - Quite bizarre horror flick set in an hospital... pretty different compared to most japanese horror movies, and that's what makes it great.

Marebito - Camera Man wants to experience true fear, leading him to the darkest and strangest places he could imagine, slowly losing his own mind... starring the awesome director Shin'ya Tsukamoto in the leading role.

R-Point - Ghost soldiers in 'Nam, to sum it up... pretty much enjoyed the change of protagonists in this one; instead of the usual defendless / dumb teenagers, or angst-driven adults, this focuses on well-trained soldiers facing the paranormal.

Shutter - Well, pretty much everyone should know this Thai flick already, it's ace.

Kairo - Not so much scary... but a pretty atmospheric and strange piece.

The lack of non-asian horror movies is probably rather obvious, it's not 'cause I genereally hate western movies of this kind - Grave Encounters, Session 9 and many more are among my favourites - but I personally think the "asian" approach to horror, with all the tension-building and the subtleness, is above most western movies in my books.

Quote: "Old Boy was a good film as wel"

Indeed, Park Chan-Wook's whole "Revenge Trilogy" was mind-boggingly rad and well done psychological-thrillers... but there's not really any scary bits in there - you should check out Confessions if you haven't already, while it's neither from Park Chan-Wook nor from South Korea, it's still an incredible thriller.

@Wolf: Salo and August Underground movies aren't really suited for half the users on here, I'd say... besides, they're not "scary" in the classical sense anyway... and the latter one plain blows.

Yeah, and that reminds me of a film so bad that I was given the movie by a neighbour and it has never entered my DVD player. It's not a horror, but one scene is horrific...

...American History X

Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Nah, but seriously I don't watch horror or scary films at all, so I honestly have no idea, although I will say that for years, "Signs" bothered the heck out of me. I can never quite say why, though, it just creeps me out, every single time I watch it.

Maybe I just am afraid of Joaquin Phoenix!

Halloween scared me when I wasn't able to think logically (As a child). Now the only thing I remember being scared by was Hatchet and Requiem for a Dream (Not a horror movie, but scary nonetheless). However, I still enjoy horror movies even if they aren't scary. Such as, A Cabin in the Woods. One of my favorite movies that I've seen in the past few years, highly recommend

I personally really love the movie. I agree that it's quite heavy, altho' that's bound to happen when taking on such a topic.

Edward Norton was absolutely splendid in that movie and the movie's message was the exact opposite of bad as well, really thoughtful and yet entertaining in a sense, despite the mentioned scene.

Quote: ""Signs" bothered the heck out of me"

You're not alone! When I first watched that movie I really had a hard time focussing on the movie since it really freaked me out back in the day... I blame the younger me tho', instead of Joaquin Phoenix (his portrayal of Johnny Cash was impressive I must say).

I can truthfully and 100% honestly say that no horror movie has ever scared me, and I go to several every single year. Since I was 3 years old my mother would stick me on a blanket and force me to watch movies like Hellraiser. As mean as that sounds, I believe it actually made me immune to horror films lol. With that said, they are one of my favorite genres of movies because hardly anything is as entertaining as watching 100 people in a room jump and scream at literally nothing happening.

My birthday is November 1st, the day after Halloween and every year there is guaranteed to be at least one horror movie in theaters. Since I was 15 years old, it has become tradition that I make my two sisters and mother go to one on the day of my birthday. My brother and father are not allowed to come though, only me and the women in the family. I do that because they are frightened little bunnies during horror movies and I love to laugh at how scared they are. If my brother or dad is there, they lighten the mood enough to make my women not as scared because they talk throughout the entire movie lol. So they aren't allowed to come.

When Insidious came out in theaters, me, two friends, and one of my sisters went to go see it (this wasn't on my birthday, just a random movie day.) We were literally the only four people in the entire theater, making it the most fun I've ever had in a theater. One of my buddies went to go to the bathroom and I jumped and hid in the back row behind where he was sitting. I told the other two to tell him I went to the bathroom when he got back. He came back and I ended up laying back there for literally 10 minutes waiting for the exact perfect moment to scare him. Needless to say, I scared him so insanely badly (he is hands down the most scared male I've ever met in my entire life, literally anything scares him seriously bad, so it was awesome) that he jumped and turned and fell over the row of seats in front of him, he somehow managed to back-hand me in the face during his jumping panic. He actually fell over the row of seats in front of him lmao. He was holding the large bucket of popcorn too and of course that went flying everywhere. It was totally worth losing $5 in popcorn lol.

Words cannot describe my Greatness... But I'll give it a shot.

I am awesome....... Yeah, that works.

the only 3 scenes in movies that ever scared me:

The Exorcist III (Ceiling Crawl):

The Exorcist (Director's Cut) (Spider Walk):

3 Men and a Baby (Ghost Boy):

the first 2 left me grinning. the 3rd, well... never left (you had to be there ).

Yes the original Japanese Ring movies were much creepier than the american one.

Another pick of mine, Event Horizon. There's just something about people with no eyes (or just dark empty eye sockets in general) that creeps me out.

@Virtual Nomad, I'm with you man. Those exorcist crawls are insanely creepy. Exorcist is #1 on my list. I saw it in theaters, front row

I'd also like to throw Hostel out there as well. Scary in a different sense due to it being the most likely to be possible. I actually cringed when he snipped that lady's eyeball off.

I think the last movie that disturbed me was Stephen King's Pet Semetary - the part with the aunt with the spinal disease, looking through the keyhole at her, and she runs right up to the camera - damn disturbing stuff.
I really like IT, both the book and the movie basically capture my childhood, sans the murderous clown etc, but we used to have our own 'barrens' when growing up. I find IT fascinating, it's so well conceived and thorough, and Tim Curry is awesome as Pennywise. It's one of those daunting books that people might not want to start reading, but it's well worth it, that book just sucked me in, hardly put it down until I'd finished it.

My favorite horror movie is Pumpkinhead, it's just awesome, it has a great atmosphere to it, and the story is really well conceived as well. It's just a great, all-round horror movie. I'm a big fan of horror's, but tend not to be affected much by them, especially not the Saw and Hostel series.
I like thrillers as well, especially the Hannibal Lecter movies, the remake of Red Dragon and good old Silence of the Lambs are great IMO.

I've watched the first 3 Saw movies. The first was interesting and the second 2 seemed to exist for the sake of existing. But I didn't find them horrifying. A friend referred to them as 'snuff' films. It's all about the presence of gore and trying to use that to shock you, the first one had much better pacing and a stronger plot, but it got boring for me when the plot just seemed skimmed over in the 2 that followed. I this respect the Saw movies remind me of the Final Destination movies. Not scary, not horrifying, the first films are well done, but the ones that follow just get worse and worse and become too focused on the main selling point and the rest falls apart and it all becomes too predictable.

I think this is a major problem with the horror genre, once it becomes predictable, it does not simply work. It requires cleverness and requires that you steer clear of being cliched. I think it should also try not to rely on shocking people to be a good film either. To me, this is where many horror films fail. Take Tale of Two Sisters, not a 'scary' film, but it was chilling and I was not expecting it - watching it through again you can pick bits out, but they're only obvious when you know the big twist. Some films you can do that when you watch through them again, Fight Club was another one (not a horror film obviously and I'm not really supposed to talk about it anyway). They certainly give you a reason to watch through them again.

I really liked the first Saw movies, not scary but it's fun with all those story twists and stuff, though the traps are a big part of the fun aswell

If you like watching horror movies this website offers not only reviews but also a lot of titles I haven't heard of before.

I recently watched "Evidence" and "Atrocious" of the list. Both are campy but creative flicks that have some pretty good tension build ups. If you like found footage flicks that is

Anyway, I bet some of you might find something new. Be careful: they do not only review the good stuff...they sift through all the garbage aswell.

Jacobs Ladder is definitely a scary film to watch, it inspired Silent Hill after all and also one to mention is Stephen King's the Mist, not as scary but is a honourable mention, directed by Frank Darabont, the guy who directed Green Mile and the first episode of the Walking Dead(since a producer) so you know its good.

i looked through the keyhole when my parents watched ALIEN when i was 6, chestburster scene. my father forced me to watch the whole movie when i stopped crying. no sleep for 3 days, but never looked through keyholes again. giger-fanboy since that. ^^

THE GRUDGE, japanese original, night, big screen, volume up. for some reason it scared the **** out of me. maybe i was in the right mood for this.

there are some really disturbing things out there, like ANTICHRIST, David Lynch-Movies, TETSUO, EX DRUMMER, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, NECROMANTIK & stuff that let your stomach grumble and empty your brains, but not that shocking.
