Shining - I just love the atmosphere.

The Orphanage - certainly not the scariest movie out there, but the story is quite interesting, especially the ending

Earthlings - sadly a documentary... a lot of really shocking footage about factory farming and animal cruelty. One of the few movies I'm pretty sure I won't ever watch again.

Mulholland Drive/Inland Empire/Anything by David Lynch - not exactly horror or scary, but once again, his films tend to have a really dark atmosphere

Irreversible - not what I expected after all I've heared about it, but still it was pretty intense, and as far as I'm concerned a good movie as well

Sauna - swedish movie, seems pretty low budget but nontheless well produced, very slow-paced but tense

The Descent - Most of the movie is nothing more than a simple horror flick, but the third act is just ingenious

Well, that's all I'm getting out of my head right now.

Edit:

Red State - begins as rather unoriginal horror film, but throws some unexpected twists at you... pretty unique overall

28 Days/Weeks Later - I hate those fast zombies...

The Host - Asian horror parody-thing, weird and funny, but nontheless quite scary

Audition - More disturbing than scary and with an extremely long exposition, but really worth the watch

Drag me to Hell - Probably not one of the best horror films out there and there are many people who consider it boring and/or stupid. But being a big fan of Raimi's work (Army of Darkness anyone?), I thought DmtH was, despite being sort of predictable, a very fun yet at times scary movie

The Medusa Touch. It's an old one, but I watched it when I was about 12 years old and it scared me so much that I couldn't get to sleep with the light off and had to read Mr Men books to get me back to sleep. To this day (I'm 40 next year) I think of Mr Men cartoons to get to sleep after waking up from a nightmare I watched parts of it since and it's not that scary, but it still gives me the chills from the memory. The Omen films give me similar chills.

The film that most scared me for a one off fright was The Thing. You know when the blokes hands get cut off. The rest of the film was watched through my fingers I think

Nothing beats a book I read when I was about 16 though. Was by James Herbert. Can't remember what it was called but it was about a plane that crashed. There is a scene where they are on a Dinghy type boat and little doll hands came over the side. Scared the hell out of me. Took a while to sleep that night I tell you Annoyingly someone told me the end of the book about a chapter before I got there. Gits...

I actually went quite a few years avoiding horror movies until some friends of ours (so into Horror that they got married on Friday the 13th) got us back into it a couple of years ago. I then overdosed on horror for a while. Was a whole new genre to me almost Biggest one to scare me in the last few years (ie. my born-again-horrorism) was The Grudge. I can watch gore stuff all day and night, no worries. But that one got me a bit with the whole cupboard scenes.

Biggest flop for me was Blair witch. I seriously thought this would screw me up since it's the sort of thing that normally gets to me. Especially after the reviews and everything. Totally let down. Wasn't scary in the slightest. Ok that last scene was ever so slightly scary, but only just. Closely followed by the Exorcist. Watched that when it was un-censored (after many years) in the cinema on Halloween. Yawn. Was actually quite a laugh as it's all 70's stuff (Doctors smoking in hospital esp good) and at one point a very drunk girl (was a midnight showing) threw up in the aisle. Nice.

Cheers

I agree about Blair Witch, I just found it boring to watch. Though nowadays I just think of the Blair Witch Project as Cherie Blair's video blog.

The Thing was a great movie, I didn't find it scary, but it was still tense stuff. However, I've yet to see The Grudge, strange that I've still not seen it.

Apparently 'Food of the Gods' was pretty scary back in the day, that is, the day when my parents were young, so it's possible it's about as scary as Plan 9 From Outta Space.
