I was reading about optimizations and was wondering if you can use texture atlases in fpsc. And would it help enough to be worth it.

I don't see any reason why you could not. But for normal maps, spectaculars etc, it might get hard to control the individual areas. But it sounds like something that can only be proven by testing.
