What to buy the rich? That is the big question. What gadget would you buy if you won the Lottery this week? This is one thing that I would buy... Spa hydro-fusion. It changes colour, it plays ambient sounds, it has various computer settings that play sequences of treatments, like steam for example. It looks amazing!...

If I won the lottery, I would give quite a lot to my mom, dad and brother - then probably buy quite a lot of new toys for my child :3
and if i had money left, upgrade my computer, and buy a new copy of demon souls.. third copy... I lost one - my mom managed to break one <_>
or i would get a PS3....

I think you'd have more from a lottery win left over to buy nice things Quik.

A nice house in America, somewhere fairly rural. Then a decent car - a sensible German car methinks - and some nice stuff for my girl, cos she'll step up to the plate of emptying my hypothetical lottery wallet.

It'd depend.. wel, i would split it evenly in 4 - then spend the rest on me and my daughter.. but maybe we're talking those fancy "one million sek" ones? (1 million / 7 = the euro currency)

in that case, i dunno, I would donate a shoelot to charity if that were the case

Assuming $10,000,000 (USD 10 million) after taxes:

I'd invest 25% into the Forex. I'd save another 25% somewhere. I'd take 10% for myself. I'd take 15% for business expenses. The remaining 25% can be divided among family and charity evenly.

With the 10% I saved for myself I would go to a doctor and pay my existing hospital bills. With what remains after that (not a lot), I'd upgrade my computer and buy a few sandwiches + teas. (Guayaki Yerba Matè.)

Assuming less than that, the numbers would change around a lot. Mostly in favor of Forex investment.

To be honest, buying would be the last thing on my mind. I'd probably use it to accelerate my academic career in some way, and I'd sit on the money for a while trying to figure out exactly what to do with it.

I'd like to think like that myself. But nah.

I would however use it to finance the rest of my academic years (and past years to which I am in debt to).

I'd buy a new, nice, three bedroom apartment in the city for myself and my beloved.
This would be a nice change.

Then I would use the money in starting up a sort of business. Sort of like a self-funded KickStarter if you will.

The rest, and most important in my eyes, is my future kids that are most likely coming along in 5 years or so.
It would be nice for them to have a Uni fund from the get go.
And parents who can afford to put a good meal on the table for them every night.

Ahhh... unfortunately life is not that easy.

I enjoy food quite a lot.

Maybe, but the topic is about gadgets, so answers not about gadgets are off topic.

The exact question posed was "What would you buy?" Given that question, it's valid to provide answers related to saving. You can view saving as "deferred buying." Even investments can be viewed as "buying money."

Though to be on the topic of commodities specifically, I would probably buy out everything ThinkGeek has, and a bunch of stuff from NewEgg. I want that quad-socket mobo + the 12 core AMDs. Yes.

I tried to make it about gadgets, maybe I failed.

Basically Pincho created a hypothetical situation to present his question, but failed to realise it would be taken literally and that in turn his question had a false premise (that we'd spend lottery money on expensive gadgets ).

So allow me to rephrase the question:

If you have the money to dispose on an expensive gadget and Pincho Paxton had a gun to your head telling you that you HAD to buy a gadget (bear in mind too he's kidnapped all your loved ones and they're hanging above a pit of lava), which gadget would you pick? It has to be something you'd want, because whilst all this is happening, Pincho has you hooked up to a polygraph, so he'll know if you're picking one at random to get out of the situation.

I'm not really big on the gadget scene, but I guess I would transform parts of my house to utilise my absolute laziness. Heck, even a toilet that wipes my bum for me.

Gadget? I would convert a room into a Jacuzzi room. One with a built in LCD screen. And a fridge. On the other hand it *might* be cheaper to convert my swimming pool into being heated and having seats with jets (rather than the existing couple of jets used to swish things into the garbage disposal thingy or whatever).

Actually I change my mind. As an extremely gadget orientated person (and lets face it who isn't here?) then if I was extremely minted (ie. millions or even billions come to think of it) I would go to the R&D departments of all my favourite products (Apple,Google,Sony,MS etc) and pay to get their next gen stuff. Only the stuff that is near it's release date (say 3 months off tops) so it's not going to be too beta, but rather at the final production stage. Non-disclosure docs obviously but after spending *millions* to get the gadgets then would put it into the contracts that I would pay them tens of millions if they got out (so a billionaire then). Nice.

Come to think of it house would then actually be a ship (lets say done up private aircraft carrier since we are going nuts) so no-one could find out my secret gadgets and cock up my NDAs.

I would then happily spend my days in next-gen bliss, occasionly sending out images of devices to blogs from almost impossible to trace locations. Obviously all pictures taken with my 0.5mpx camera from like 1997 which has it's lens smeared with Vasoline for some reason...

True story.

Cheers

I worked out that in my previous job I'd have to work 480 years to earn $10m. That's kind of sickening when you think we have multiple billionaires in the world. And I don't even have a job any more.

If I had enough money I'd love to go back to Africa and set up some schools, build roads and all that kind of stuff. Just thinking about what could be done with $10m is quite inspiring.

I think if I kept around a million for myself that would be great. I could buy a car and learn to drive it lol. I'd buy some nice sound recording equipment and pay to study for a degree. Then I'd still have plenty to live comfortably for at least a decade. MORE WIIIINE!

Shh... you're pretty.

OBese, take into account inflation rates, taxes, and other factors. Have you calculated that a million will get you by for a at least a decade, comfortably? (Also, what is comfortably? xP) Are you in the USA or the UK or ...?

Virtual Nomad @ California, USA . DBPro V7.7
AMD Phenomâ„¢ X4 9750 Quad-Core @ 2.4 GHz . 8 GB PC2-6400 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3650 @ 512 MB . Vista Home Premium 64 Bit

Spa chamber does not excite me. I'd get this if I was stupid rich and had to buy a gadget

A bit over $2 mil. fully equipped with leather seats and drink holder XD

Sure, I'd need to first throw money at engineers to complete R&D and get it fully mobile but it would worth it to see it finished ASAP.
Maybe have modifications done so that it could mount a real machinegun and add a smoker's hatch.
Might as well get two so I can play with a friend.

If I won the lottery?

I would buy a super-computer, all the gadgets/stupid little things I ever wanted and give the remaining $10 to my family so they can buy themselves a Happy Meal or something.

That reminds me of something I heard a friend of mine say he would do if he won the lotto. "I would send a check for a penny to my friend in Nebraska."

The more I thought about this though, the more I think I'd want to get a bunch of guitars if I had the cash (and had to buy "gadgets" which I'm assuming means "toys"). I'm talking about really expensive guitars too.

I'd buy a block of land and instead of having a house built I'd have a 1 screen cinema built with about 10 seats in it. I'd have whatever the top of the line player (Blu-ray?) is in there and just have my own cinema. I'd be happy to wait until the movies were released at retail to watch them in the comfort of my own cinema. No noisy kids, no ignorant people talking/texting all through the movie, no having the back of my chair kicked. It would be bliss. 10 seats so I could invite people over if I wanted.

That would be the gift I gave myself.

Why not just go nuts and buy a proper IMAX cinema? Or have one built next to your house. And stuff Bluray. You want the proper IMAX 3D projectors etc with the full works. Infact get rid of all the seats and everything and build a multi storey house there instead with lots of really large windows and the whole sound system piped into every room. So you could watch a movie from anywhere in the house, or even in the garden, pool etc. Imagine a bit of console action through a 4K projector (bit of next-gen consoling might be required there for the increased resolution but what the hey) while relaxing in the pool (long range wireless waterproof controllers)

Cheers

I'd definitely have a cinema room. The room would also be an exhibition of movies with full scale Robocop, Batman, Batmobile, and other movie furnishings.

Yeah since I moved back to Cyprus I've been meaning to move my projector from my flat to my villa. Nothing like it really. I never wanted to buy one until a friend showed me Star Wars on his one. I bought one straight away. Watched all Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies over a weekend. Lovely stuff

Now to convince the wife to change nicely laid out lounge to replace all chairs with Lazy Boy efforts She won't go for it but I can dream of the upmarket (the ones you pay more for to have nice seats and your own area with toilets and bottomless food/drink) cinema type scene it would create The "It's still all black leather" excuse probably won't do it...

I would build a massive workshop with everything you would possibly need to persue new invention ideas. The rest would be pooled into resources for the workshop.

That's not far off from what I'd ideally do If I won big lotto money... I think it would be great to buy some land and build a self-sustaining compound/co-op where people could quit their day-jobs and come to work on their ideas. It would be guarded by giant robots, of course.

If I won more than a few million, I'd use a lot of it to fund my own film projects! Ah, I dream of the day I can get my hands on a few million to make something amazing, or maybe crap, depending on how well I write/direct it.
I'd also get a computer with lots of CPU cores so I could edit the film by myself, then hop onto a game when I get tired...
And of course I'd pay for a good-sized cinema in my new house to screen my masterpiece in
