Before you post I'd just like to set a few guidelines to make this whole thing more interesting.

1) What do you listen to? Post a link to something.
2) Why do you listen to it? Explain why you like the music you posted and what it means to you.
3) Do you listen to any other music while not working?
4) If you don't listen to any music at all, let us know why you choose to do that.

When I'm programming I want the music I listen to to construct a world in my head that feels warm but empty. Vast landscapes of nothingness in the middle of nowhere. In addition to that it should have a nicely paced rythm to it.

The music can be repetitive, but it shouldn't be an annoying kind of repetitive. Voices are also a no-go because I find they distract my thoughts.

This allows my mind to sink in and keeps the code and thoughts flowing, and time becomes non existant. What's interesting to me is that I have a lot of music with an "arabic" touch to it. I guess it reminds me of the desert.

This is going to differ between people, but the way I fulfill this is by listening mostly to atmospheric DnB. The song at the very bottom is not DnB, but it's very soothing and gives my mind what it needs.

I listen to music while working on the train to uni. The main purpose of the music is to block out all of the background noise I hear but for it to work it has to be a soft song.

I'll often listen to Linkin Park's softer songs such as:
Iridescent

Castle of Glass

There's nothing like listening to music to ease the pressure of work.

Listening to The Essential Simon and Garfunkel, and Hot Chip at the moment. Might throw Tom Waits back into rotation soon as well. Good stuff.

I really like that mix comet. Good find! Also nice to see Sahara getting a shout out!

I listen to music when I'm working on something that doesn't require too much thought, for the reasons you've outlined. A lot of it is metal, but it can distract me quite a lot when a proper tune comes on.

If I really want non-distracting background music I tune into bassdrive radio for my dnb fix. A lot of the DJs play some pretty mundane mixes, but they're just interesting enough to fill the void and not distract. Think I'll give that mix of yours a whirl today.

Oh, you know, I like soundtracks a lot. And many of them.

As well as most stuff by Clint Mansell (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, Smokin Aces, Moon..), and a lot of Hans Zimmer and Morricone.
On top of that many tracks from Half Life, Portal 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Halo, Quake, Doom, The Matrix, Léon...
Sometimes Two Steps from Hell, Mike Oldfield, Pendulum.

Lyrics tend to distract me as well. Generally I prefer fast music to reach a flow-state and more epic music for motivational purposes, which works pretty well.

Not everyone can listen to music while working (esp programming where you have to think a lot). Personally I can listen to anything. Although over the years I've normally put my favourite rock songs to one side when doing important work (too tempting to sing along and stop working). Oh and anything too emotional gets junked normally when working.

1) What do you listen to?
While working I like a lot of Ambient or chilled out stuff. At the minute I'm quite liking the Drive soundtrack. But it can massively vary. Earlier I was listening to The Sisters of Mercy for example. Next will be My Bloody Valentine (Loveless).
2) Why do you listen to it? Explain why you like the music you posted and what it means to you.
It feels good while working. Otherwise it can get a bit boring programming for a living. If I'm past the hump stage (ie. on downward slope of development) of a job then I pump up the music to get me even more motivated as I'm on a bit of a high at that stage
3) Do you listen to any other music while not working?
The opposite of stuff I listen to while working. So the more rocking songs, and more music that I find emotional. Not much different to when I'm working though to be honest.
4) If you don't listen to any music at all, let us know why you choose to do that.
I choose to not listen to anything when I'm extremely stressed at work. This rarely happens, but if a load of different problems and jobs are hitting me at once I then have to have no music and get everything sorted. Just straight programming on one job, regardless of the complexity of a problem, is pretty easy to get on with and pretty much most music is fine at that point. Oh, and I turn music off if a client or work colleague phones (I work from home so use speakers rather than earphones).

Right, My Bloody Valentine is up. Awesomeness indeed.

Cheers

Yeah, me neither. Infact once I know the lyrics to a song it almost dies for me. What was a lovely melody and me singing along with my own made up words nearly always ends up with something like "yeah yeah yeah, I love my melon shaped people that come with my Skoda, yeah yeah yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.". Sigh... Most people are the other way around. Fools...

For me though the emotional stuff isn't the lyrics, but the memories it brings up. The song that meant something between you and an ex, the song that played at your wedding etc etc. Put one of them on and the memories get in the way basically. Deep dude.

Cheers

Nothing, not allowed while at work ("Against health and safety"), nor do I normally listen to music when I am allowed. The only time I do listen is when I play games that have music playing for what ever reason.

Hmm. That's difficult to say, for me.

Rock: Green Day, Jimi Hendrix, Deftones, Incubus
Metal/Progressive/wetf it's called~ (not heavy): Chevelle, Tool, A Perfect Circle
Heavy Metal/Rock: Metallica, All That Remains, Shadows Fall, ...
Instrumental Rock: Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Buckethead
"Classical" (there are different kinds of classical music, of course): Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, and Bach are some of my favorites. I prefer the Nocturnes of Chopin mostly.
Reggae/Rock: Bob Marley, Dispatch, State Radio, Black Uhuru, Scientist, Seeed, etc.
Other: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn

I dislike most pop, like Lady Gaga (sorry Bugsy), Katy Perry, Justin Beiber (Destroy it! With FIRE!), etc. I dislike all rap except for some older Eminem stuff, older Atmosphere, and some of the stuff from The Roots. Most of the rap I hear on the radio (or from my relatives) I tend to dislike. Same with most of what plays on the radio in general. Not because I have an issue against what plays on the radio (hey, sometimes Green Day and Tool are on the radio) but because I genuinely tend to dislike it.

Here's an interesting note about my thinking ability while working and music: it has almost no effect on me. When I get into what I'm doing, I almost completely forget music is even playing. I don't notice it at all. I just continue working, thinking to myself, etc. To me, it becomes just noise in the background. (I find silence can be more distracting at times, because I tend to notice the silence more.) It's kind of funny, I'll be listening to a song then the next thing I know, it's three hours later and a completely different song is playing... and I didn't notice the music at all during that time.

It might be fun to hook me up to a machine that monitors brain waves and let me code with music for about two hours, and again without music for another two hours. Then again with a type of music I despise. And once more with all of my favorite songs in it. It'd be fun to see the results. (Of course, this would have to be done over a couple of days, and the routine might need to have some variation added each day.)

There is something odd I noticed though. If I watch a movie before going to sleep, the next day my general performance is improved. I wonder why this is.

I digress. Here are a few links to some of my favorite songs.

Tool - Vicarious (YouTube)
Deftones - Diamond Eyes (YouTube)
Deftones - Passenger (YouTube)
A Perfect Circle - Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drum (YouTube)

Chevelle - Jars (YouTube)
Jason Becker - Blue (YouTube)

And a bunch more stuff.

Our music varies during our work days. We listen to rock, country, techno, instrumental, Irish, Celtic, and various movie soundtracks. We even listen to bagpipe music quite often (Gordon Highlanders, Piper's Legacy- Scottish Celtic Bagpipes, Saor Patrol to name a few). Some of our music is from our youth, some from our kid's growing up, some during military service. Lyrics, no lyrics, fast, slow- makes no difference to us and does not affect the day work. And there is nothing like having the Royal Guardsmen playing at some point during the day, even the Irish Rovers.

I have a large selection of metal I like listening to. The list of bands I listen to is loooooooong. But recently? I've been listening to a lot of Stratovarius and Master Plan.

For example, here's Infinity by Stratovarius

Crystal Night by Master Plan (condemning it, don't worry, I'm not a Nazi )

Other bands I love listening to whilst coding include Therion, who are an amazing, but very weird band. They're from Sweden and originally were a Death Metal band in the early 90s and kind of varied themselves after that - somebody described their albums as like a box of chocolates, because you never know what you're gonna get. They go through band members fairly quickly, as different people's styles suit different albums. Their latest album was really weird and eccentric and not a good album for people new to Therion (it's a great album though). Also, they did a big concert in Hungary with an orchestra and the entire first half was just classical music. So it's hard to actually pick on of their tracks. However, I figure I'd pick this one. It's their cover of an Abba song and a pretty damn good cover.

Like a sir!

Opeth, most people will probably have heard of them by now. Another great Swedish band. This is one of my favourite songs of their's
Basically a progressive death metal band with a melodic after taste. Their latest album (Heritage) was basically singer/frontman Mikael Akerfeldt turning around and saying, "I've always fancied making a prog album", and so they did and it's a big contrast to the video there.

He also teamed up with master of prog, Steve Wilson (from Porcupine Tree) to do an album called 'Storm Corrosion', I enjoyed the result, but it is really bizarre.

I think I'll end on another band, a little closer to home and one I like coding to (keeping in theme). An old band, whose music is best played live (and hell, they really know how to get a crowd going). Despite being apart of the original British heavy metal scene, I think they're more appreciated on the continent in countries like Germany than here in the UK. Saxon. I've seen them 3 times, all at Wacken festival in Germany.

Also, my grandad used to do accounting for Saxon and given my uncle was a big Saxon fan (and therefore listened to their music all the time, along with Iron Maiden), I think it has made my dad kind of loathe their music a bit. He came with us to Wacken this year and we managed to force him to watch them live and he won't admit it, but he loved it.

When I'm not working, my taste is pretty much the same. After all, I'm not working when I'm watching them live (at least, I've seen all of the bands I've listed live, heck I was there in that Saxon one).

When I'm working on stuff I mostly go for music that doesn't focus too much on vocals - so it's mostly instrumentals, ambient, post-rock and the like, altho' I throw in shoegaze occasionally as well.

Shoegaze

Sealight - Sometimes
SPC Eco - Like it is
Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic
Air Formation - Cold Morning
Malory - Spring
Young Prisms - Floating in Blue

Post-Rock / Ambient

Hammock - I Can Almost See You
Two Bicycles - The Ocean (Part two)
The Polar Dream - Endless Tales
Caspian - Moksha
Laura - We are mapping your Dreams
Parachutes - Where Were You

Acoustic Instrumentals / Soundtracks

Be with You - Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu ~ Toki wo Koete
Yasushi Yoshida - Grateful Goodbye
Kotaro Oshio - Landscape
With Ether - Silent Hill Medley

Quote: "Next will be My Bloody Valentine (Loveless)."

Incredible band and this album is simply a masterpiece... still waiting for the rumored follow-up tho', but who can trust Kevin nowadays.

If I'm sitting at the keyboard, I've generally got something on.

Been listening to Defying Gravity by Keith Urban a lot lately. Which is a wee bit of departure from the normal list of retro head banger bands

A lot of vibrations.

Mostly Swing, Jazz, Blues, Electro-Swing and a lovely dose of Chillwave off on the side, Electronica - Including artists like Caravan Palace, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Brothertiger, Com Truise, Neon Indian, Parov Stellar, Kormac, Chinese Man, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Tape Five, The Atomic Fireballs... Just naming a few off the top of my head.

I would post examples but I predict I would end up posting too many. I also listen to the sounds of keyboards.

This thread, just wow... I have been struggling to decide on what to listen to while coding lately but I often listen to various japanese artists... namely Gackt, Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda Kumi, Namie Amuro, Puffy AmiYumi and the fantastic Chihiro Ontisuka to name a few...

I should clarify I mean struggle because I am studying a lot of web technologies at the moment, so while coding I can listen to music but while studying a book... it gets slightly more difficult... but some background sound is handy

Puffy AmiYumi

Chihiro Onitsuka

She is simply amazing in my books!

I guess you could say I like soothing music more than rocky, but Spacial music as ThE CoMeT mentioned to create a vast emptiness of an environment to create an environment in my mind goes for me too... sometimes clearing the cloudyness of noise helps focus on the tiny details in closer detail than ever.

EDIT

Here is a track just sent to me now... woooo Nostalgia!!!

a remix of it though

Oh man I love Muse, it has been such a while since I've listened to any of their albums.

I'll have to add another band to my list, Ayreon. It's a pretty amazing project IMO. They're great for working to. Basically, this Dutch guy called Arjen Lucassen started the Ayreon project, basically it's a metal opera. The music varies from song to song and it has contributions from artists from wide backgrounds, singers representing different characters, singers from bands including Dream Theater, Opeth, Katatonia, Blind Guardian, After Forever, Devin Townsend, Evergrey, Iron Maiden (yup, he got Bruce Dickenson for one of his albums), Threshold, Stratovarius and more.

The album I'm listening to at the moment is 'The Human Equation', which is about a guy (sung by Jame LaBrie of Dream Theater) in a coma battling his demons, each of his emotions sung by different people, like Fear (Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth) and Rage (Devin Townsend of Devin Townsend and Strapping Young Lad). So the song I'm going to pick is from that album and it's called Loser. It's the haunting of the character's father (Mike Baker of Shadow Gallery) or includes Devin Townsend. The albums tend to be based around science fiction and fantasy.
Loser

And one more. This is from 0101101 called The Sixth Extinction.

Even if you don't like metal, I'm sure a sci-fi or fantasy geek could appreciate them.

TheComet gets 100 pts for playing Telegraph Road. I love that song!

This is the type of stuff I listen to when coding (I'll be intentionally obscure here):
Zero Project
Infinity
Lost Signal

I don't like too many vocals when coding as vocals are distracting in large quantities (as mentioned before) and I like how this sort of music puts you into a kinda of high-functioning trance.

Outside of coding my tastes in music are so vast and varied that I listen to nearly everything (I love everything from Dire Straits to chiptunes from Megaman on NES - fo' real). However the majority of what I listen to is not mainstream. So I'll try to share some obscure stuff and stuff that hasn't been mentioned here yet:

Yuki Kajiura
Duran Shoukan
Ensei
I love dramatic stuff too.

Epica:
The Divine Conspiracy
Well, it's Epica which means it's Epica.lly awesome. I especially love this song though I think Design Your Universe was their best album.

Delain:
Day For Ghosts
Electricity
Nobody I know ever heard of Delain, dunno if anyone here has.

Nightwish:
Story Time
When Tarja left, I never thought I'd listen to them again until I heard this album.

Machinae Supremacy:
Persona
Flagcarrier
Throttle And Mask
MaSu are just awesome!

The Black Mages:
Those Who Fight Further
Specially for Seppuku and MrValentine (Don't know if anyone else here was a Final Fantasy fan). Yeah Uematsu-san has his own band and they do arrangements of FF themes dating back to FF1.

Deathstars:
Cyanide
Warning - creepy video (I like creepy. I'm creepy IRL so I like creepy things. One day I'll have a creepy doll collection. fo' real).

Been dying to post here but my router was busted till a few hours ago...But seriously don't get me started on music, I could go on for hours because I appreciate all genres (although I have an extra soft spot for Symphonic Metal). Sadly in my country, it's only American, South African and a little British pop/rap stuff that anyone's heard of. I was so happy when I saw the playlist posted by everyone. Actually, a "Post a Track a Day" thread would be cool. Like TGC-fm...Cutting myself off before this goes overboard.

[POINTLESS_EDIT_LOG]: Aaargh! Copy-paste-failed, missed one...fixed. [/POINTLESS_EDIT_LOG]

*Puts hand up*

Not only have I heard of them, but I saw them at Wacken 2012 last month. I was soaking wet and covered in mud, but it was good.

It seems you and I have similar tastes, you might like some of the stuff I've posted if you've not heard of all of them.

I love the Black Mages. You seen any of the Nobuo Uematsu orchestral concerts? I occassionally listen to some of Uematsu's work when coding too, not very often, but he's made some of the best video game music out there. It's just weird watching these orchestras perform it like it's a piece of Beethoven.

However, I don't know if you ever play Final Fantasy XI, only other forumite I know of that has is Josh Mooney, but here's an interesting rendition of Ronfaure (which didn't originally have lyrics).

I am almost tempted to resubscribe just for the music in the game. Still the best MMO I've ever played, just a horrible time sink.

Keeping a folkish theme (I think I said I listen to a variety of music when working), I quite like the genre of music called 'Neo-Folk', I think it's mainly a German thing (all the bands seem to be German at least), here's a song I like by Neun Welten:

I also saw Delain live earlier this year. I thought everyone that listened to Within Temptation/Nightwish also knew about Delain?

As for music I listen to whilst coding/working, basically just the same stuff I listen to normally. I don't really hear the music any more once I'm working. It just blocks out my surroundings so I concentrate entirely on whatever I'm doing.

A lot of what I listen to has been posted already:
Delain
NightWish
Mike Oldfield
My Bloody Valentine
God is an Astronaut
Tool
Dire Straits
Opeth
Storm Corrosion
Porcupine Tree
Explosions in the Sky
Rammstein
Devin Townsend
Getting bored of going through all the posts, so I'll stop here..

Some random artists I've been listening to a lot lately that haven't been posted yet:

I'm a senior dev at the world's largest lyrics website, so I listen to lots of music with lyrics! But for fun, I'm usually listening to the complete Skrillex playlist on Spotify, Stevie Wonder, or Rufus Wainwright.

@RalphY Yay! Another Katatonia fan! And Anathema too.

Nightwish/Tarot/Sonata Arctica fans might like this. Northern Kings, basically 4 singers from popular Finnish bands (Marco Hietala and Tony Kakko make up 2) do cover songs.

And er, Marco's just a small town girl.

Also, I go through stages of listening to nothing but Ronnie James Dio, one of metal's best vocalists IMO. (How much of a sample did you need The Comet? )

Lucky you!

Nice selection. Never heard any Ayreon or Stratovarius before (I think a friend of mine may have mentioned Ayreon once). Really awesome, so tks for the share.

Nah, I've played I to X and XII (X-2 made me cry out "HERESY!" so I never completed it. Was tempted to put the disc in a toaster) but never played XI. I developed a block against XI because FF has always been a single-player experience for me. Never was much of a fan of multi-player games. I could always take or leave them. Anyway, music sounded good though. Maybe I'll think of getting the OST. I like OSTs too.

Fair enough. If you don't like multiplayer games, then it's not for you, unlike some MMOs it really isn't one you could get away with playing solo. However, it remains pretty true to Final Fantasy and out of the series I would argue it is the last true Final Fantasy game, maybe XII at a stretch because XI & XII shared similar game play principles. In XII I missed the classic summons, in XI you get them, I had a Summoner on there but I was missing Fenrir, Odin and Alexander. And like in many of the Final Fantasy games you have to fight these summons before you could use them.

And I agree about X-2, it had potential, but it was not fulfilled. I see you've not mentioned XIII, it was a major disappointment for me, hence I've not even bought XIII-2.

Lost Odyssey had a pretty decent OST, I've got it myself and enjoy listening to it from time to time. Also, Lost Odyssey was a fantastic game if you haven't played it and I'd argue it's the best JRPG on the 360. It's Nobuo Uematsu again, so definitely worth it for that.

What annoys me about this track is: it's on the travel screen so you don't actually spend much time on there and you really only get to hear the first part, but Nobuo sneaks in a guitar solo at the end.

Another good OST to listen to is Nier's, another underrated 360 (and PS3) title. It's not Nobuo, but it's a good soundtrack none the less. I tend to listen to it when I wanna listen to something mellow, my music collection doesn't have a lot of mellow stuff after all.

Not to get too off topic, but which website? I normally go to songmeanings.com because there are less invasive ads there (though I could care less about how other people interpret music).

I can only listen to music if I'm doing something creative. If I'm coding or doing maths I need complete silence. I don't often listen to music but when I do I listen to all sorts. Here are some songs on my favourites list as an example:

Interesting that the majority of music on here is Metal. I had a SOAD phase, but that was about it. Tended toward punk more, ala NoFX and Lagwagon.

At the moment, listening to the Vangelis score to Blade Runner. Fantastic stuff.
